On Thanksgiving Day, an undocumented White House resident, draped in an American flag and carrying his meager thoughts and belongings in a binder clenched between his teeth, climbed the fence surrounding and protecting – and keeping out the unwanted from – the First Family Residence.



Perhaps he yearned for the bounty tantalizingly so near yet seemingly beyond his pitiful reach; maybe he just needed to use a bathroom – there are 35 of them inside – or take a nap in one of the many bedrooms, read a book in the library, or host a gathering in one of the 132 rooms in that famous home.

Or maybe he was hungry and wanted to join in the Obamas' Thanksgiving meal. Certainly there was room for another place; needy individuals should be welcomed, and he wouldn't have disturbed anyone. And he could have added so much to the group, even doing what other guests wouldn't/couldn't.

Dinner:

So over he went. Or tried to. The ever vigilant border agents, the White House security guards, and the Secret Service plus their guard dogs caught him before he could advance. But instead of setting him free, as they are instructed to do with other undocumented sneaking in illegally through fences and other barriers designed to keep them out, they cruelly and insensitively labeled him an illegal intruder – and a crazy one at that – shipping him off to his own safe space to undergo a psychiatric evaluation before he appears in court. The White House was even locked down, with extra patrols added.

But why all the fuss? Why wasn't he welcomed and set free, as are those other undocumented folks? According to his lawyer, the fence-jumper was merely a "politically conscious young man" who was simply trying to "deliver a message."

It was a message, said the lawyer, Stephan Seeger, that "addresses the issues of education, the judiciary, the legal system. It's a writing I suspect was earmarked for the government to see."

Court documents have stated that Caputo left a suicide note, though Seeger said that "couldn't be further from the truth." Caputo's words, he said, had been mischaracterized.

"Joe wanted to let his family know that if something did happen, there was a range of possibilities," Seeger said. "One possibility would be that he'd be arrested. He used some words that were construed as he would be harmed. He had no intention of taking his own life."

Seeger acknowledged that Caputo's "manner of delivery" may have been "alarming," but he attributed that alarm to a "climate of fear."

"If someone does something unorthodox, it's automatically a threat," he said.

Hmmm...so a politically conscious young man simply trying to deliver a message about education, the judiciary, the legal system creates a climate of fear. Isn't that what the other undocumenteds are doing – creating a climate of fear by their frightening and illegal actions? And isn’t the U.S. intensifying that climate of fear by sanctioning and encouraging the undocumented actions, criticizing those who complain about undocumenteds instead? After all, 99.9999999999% of the residents of the U.S. do not have multiple private guards, dogs, or weapons to protect them and their families from such undocumented folks – something about their own personal finances and U.S. laws prevents that.

Now if the United States, under President Barack Obama (D), would only have that same feeling of a "climate of fear" toward other undocumented alien intruders and the many documented "pilgrims" with those same messages Obama is inviting into this country and treat them the way the White House guards did, that climate of fear would perhaps simmer down a bit. U.S. citizens deserve the same climate of safety as their president.

That is a climate talk Obama really should have.
