US Border Patrol reopens checkpoints around El Paso

US Border Patrol reopens checkpoints around El Paso

EL PASO, Texas (AP) — The U.S. Border Patrol has re-opened its inland checkpoints around El Paso, Texas, after closing them for several months due to staffing shortages.

The re-openings were announced Monday as El Paso grapples with the aftermath of a mass shooting that left more than 22 people dead.

Amid fears that immigrants in the U.S. illegally might not seek help after the shooting, U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced it wouldn't do any enforcement at area hospitals or shelters.

Border Patrol checkpoints reopen in New Mexico

    Lucas Peerman, Las Cruces Sun-News
    Published 9:22 a.m. MT Aug. 5, 2019 | Updated 2:00 p.m. MT Aug. 5, 2019

LAS CRUCES - The U.S. Border Patrol checkpoints in the El Paso Sector have reopened.

The inland checkpoints were closed in late March to allow agents to help process the large number of migrants crossing ports of entry and illegally crossing in desert areas, officials said at the time.

The influx of migrants has slowed in recent months. Also, the Trump administration’s “Remain in Mexico” program has been utilized to keep asylum-seekers in border cities while awaiting hearings in U.S. immigration courts.

"While the El Paso Sector is still experiencing significantly higher traffic in our area, the funding for additional infrastructure, along with personnel support from government agencies throughout the country has allowed a significant number of agents to return to their primary assignments, to include immigration checkpoints," the Border Patrol stated in a news release.

The checkpoints are part of the Border Patrol's immigration and smuggling enforcement system in the border region.

The six permanent checkpoints in the El Paso Sector include:

    • U.S. Highway 62/180 about 30 miles east of El Paso in Hudspeth County
    • I-10 West - located 22 miles west of Las Cruces on Interstate 10
    • I-25 North - located 23 miles north of Las Cruces on Interstate 25
    • U.S. 70 East - located 15 miles southwest of Alamogordo on U.S. Route 70
    • US Route 54 - located 30 miles south of Alamogordo
    • New Mexico Highway 185 - located 13 miles northwest of Radium Springs

Border Patrol confirmed the agency is using an alternate checkpoint on I-25, not the one located 23 miles north of Las Cruces. The alternate checkpoint is closer to Truth or Consequences. Border Patrol did not clarify if there are plans to reopen the permanent checkpoint on I-25.

Highway checkpoints in the neighboring Big Bend Sector never closed.

    'Great news'

Southern New Mexico community leaders have expressed safety concerns over the checkpoint closures in recent months.

Otero County used statistics showing the number of drug seizures rising since the closure of the checkpoints to support the passage of a resolution declaring a "state of emergency."

Most of the population of Otero County resides just outside of the checkpoints.
