U.S. Embassy warns Americans to stay away from Mexican rallies

MEXICO CITY — Two days before what is expected to be a massive march and rally backing populist ÖAndrés Manuel López Obrador's efforts to seek a presidential election recount, the U.S. Embassy is advising Americans to stay away from it.

“We wish to remind U.S. citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence,” stated a note distributed Friday via e-mail to Americans living in Mexico City.

“U.S. citizens are urged to avoid the areas of demonstrations, and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any protests,” it continued.

The message included an appeal in red text that it be forwarded to as many U.S. citizens as possible. It also warned that foreigners participating in activities the Mexican government deems political could subject them to deportation.

Although the embassy occasionally warns Americans about such dangers as drug-cartel violence, Friday's e-mail touched a raw nerve with López Obrador and his Democratic Revolution Party, known as the PRD.

López Obrador's adversaries have sought to paint him as dangerous to the nation, both because of his policy positions and the potential actions of his followers.

Although outgoing Mexican President Vicente FoxÖ has refrained from addressing the nation regarding the election — pending the outcome of López Obrador's appeal — President BushÖ already congratulated the apparent winner, Felipe CalderónÖ of Fox's own National Action Party.

Inti Muñoz, a congressman who heads the PRD's congressional delegation, said he had not seen the note, but that he would hope the United States would not get involved in Mexico's electoral process.

“We respectfully ask the United States to stay impartial,” he said.

Muñoz said he invited Americans and any other foreigners to watch Sunday's events so that they can see how Mexicans are trying to protect the integrity of their voting process.

He said there would be no violence, and anyone spreading such concerns was resorting to the campaign tactics of the Calderón camp.

I believe so from what this article below describes. Maybe our Government should issue the same warning for citizens in the United States.

Rallies Planned in US Protesting Electoral Fraud in Mexico
MEXICO CITY. — The disputed Mexican election results seem to be spilling over the border as nationals from that country who reside in the United States have announced the staging demonstrations in support of presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

The “Front of Mexicans Abroad” has called for protest demonstrations to be held in at the Mexican Embassy in the US and at consulates throughout that country.

According to organizers, rallies are expected to take place in San Francisco, San Jose, Los Angeles, Fresno, San Diego, Sacramento, Modesto, Riverside, Dallas, New York City, Chicago, Atlanta, Washington D.C. and Saint Louis.

Meanwhile, groups of Lopez Obrador´s supporters hailing from the country’s 300 electoral districts have begun to converge on Mexico City’s Zocalo Square to participate in a march planned for Sunday.

Participants in tomorrow’s rally will be briefed on the electoral process, and Lopez Obrador will announce strategic actions which will be undertaken to spotlight his assertion of massive electoral fraud.

For his part, Felipe Calderon —who was proclaimed winner of the presidential elections— insisted yesterday that the vote-by-vote recount being demanded by the opposition coalition would be absurd and illegal.

Mothers: Don't let your children march in Mexico
    By: scantojr · Section: Diaries

One of my Mexican friends sent me this announcement. The US Embassy in Mexico City is advising Americans to stay out of political demonstrations. It is illegal for foreign nationals to march in Mexico.
This is rather funny. Didn't we just see thousands of Mexicans marching in US streets with Mexican flags and placards in Spanish? I won't even mention the idiots who carried "Che" and "US stole California" signs.

Read this and don't laugh too hard. Here it goes:

    United States Embassy Mexico

Can't we reciprocate? It's only the polite thing to do with our 'neighbor.'

We should bill Mexico for the expesnse these marches will cost taxpayers in security and traffic control, since they are a reaction to Mexico's election.

Also, ICE bring lots of busses to the locations mentioned and start rounding people up because it's the perfect time for a mass deportation project.

Good one Wavtek, but still is that all these people do is rally? Maybe some good old fashioned ingenuity and elbow grease to change things in your own country might be the ticket instead of marching as that does not change anything. All it does is make people angry.
