California prepares for boycott that could be historic or routine

LOS ANGELES (AP) - About three thousand people rallied for immigrant rights today in the Los Angeles suburb of Lynwood.

Organizers of the demonstration called on residents and businesses to support tomorrow's boycott.

Thousands across the state plan to stay away from school and work to show that immigrants make significant contributions to America's economy.

Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (vee-yah-ry-GOH'-sah) says he plans to work tomorrow, and may participate in a pro-immigration rally after work. He urges protesters to uphold the spirit of American democracy by carrying the American flag and singing the national anthem in English.

Meanwhile, a church group in Orange County plans to stage a pro-American rally at Santa Ana city hall.
