The SANE NuVo Initiative is alive and well. The grass roots religious conservatives, Jewish and Christian, are sending signals to all of the pollsters taking note that they are staying home this coming November. Count them out. The conservative pundits, all of them to a man and woman, are doing their utmost to rally the religious faithful, predominantly solid Republican voters, back into the fray. Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, Michelle Malkin, Ann Coulter, and many more. Not voting is worse than abdication they say. It is a supreme act of cowardice; it is irresponsible. You’ve got to be in the game to control the outcome. And more of the same.

But it isn’t sticking. The reason the ra-ra, “win one for the Gipper”, isn’t working, at least not yet, is that most of the Republican and “conservative” cheerleaders believe that the religious conservatives, mostly of the Christian Evangelical denominations, are rejecting the democratic process this mid-term because they are disgusted by the Foley affair and disappointed with the Bush non-position on the borders and illegal immigration, and the lack of any real plan to win the war in Iraq and around the world against the Muslims trying to kill us, convert our children, and destroy our nation. But the desperate message by the conservative pundits won’t have any real effect because the rationale for the Stay Away attitude is not merely a result of the Disgust Factor or the Disappointment Factor.

The truth is that there is plenty of Disgust and Disappointment among all conservatives to go around. But the real problem this election cycle is that religious conservatives are beginning to understand, it is not yet a tidal wave but a strong undercurrent gaining momentum slowly and with acceleration, that as religious conservatives they reject the notion that you can fight the Open Society, multi-cultural democracy that rejects just about everything this country was founded upon, including quite explicitly its Judeo-Christian religious roots, with more open society, multi-cultural democracy. Goodness, even Bill O’Reilly jumps to define a “traditionalist” (as opposed to the enemy, the Secular Progressive) as someone who believes in a “Judeo-Christian philosophy, NOT a religion” (yes, that is a quote; and go here and click on the interview with Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America [at 5:15 into the clip]). O’Reilly says America should embrace Islam and even gay marriage assuming it is the “will of the people” via “democracy”. (See our essay, “Bill O’Reilly and the Secular Progressives”.)

So what does that mean America is to this traditionalist and to the other secular Republicans? Yep. You guessed it. A vote. America’s character, its national existence, its Judeo-Christian worldview, or even its “philosophy”, is all subject to a vote. If the Muslims can breed and convert faster than Christians, well, we’ll just be the Western Bank of the New Middle East. And, if gays continue to demand the right to raise children and get the public schools to teach about the beauty of homosexuality, well, guess that will become a whole new tradition.

A vote. That is all it is. A contest of wills. But this contest is rigged and people are beginning to understand that. When everything is subject to a vote, even the rules, nothing of substance is left. If we concede by our very act of voting that our Peoplehood is only a method, then we have handed over the keys. Then a “traditionalist” is merely a poll. Tradition doesn’t mean what it would normally mean. There is no tradition. A tradition that is here today and gone tomorrow because we have “progressed” is PROGRESSIVE -- it is not a tradition. When national existence becomes merely a vote, and not something of substance and transcendent, beyond the vagaries of shifting demographics that we refuse to control because we are a “multi-cultural, democratic, Open Society” that must never differentiate between people and their “human rights,” the game is over and the vote is meaningless.

We refuse to play. Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly, Laura Ingraham, and the rest of you, we know why you are in the game. Politics and vitriol and gamesmanship all amount to ratings, fame, praise as “culture warriors” and delusions of grandeur. But one thing is for sure. When we look back on this time in history, when we shake our heads over this country’s demise, we will look back on this time and ask, What did these otherwise good people think they were doing playing with national existence in this way? What were they doing to their very souls? If your contemporaries dare you to play Russian Roulette, is the way to “win” to take your chances and play or is it to refuse such self-destructive behavior and to show the less mature and less thoughtful that there is indeed another way? As a parent, what are you teaching your children? Play the game even when the rules suggest that there can be NO TRUTH only votes? Think about that for a moment. There is no truth; only the vote.
