“We are the future of America. Unlike any prior generation, we now have the critical mass. We’re going to Latinize this country.�

Gutierrez might want to talk to Bernard-Henri Levy, a French philosopher who was hired by Atlantic to follow in de Tocqueville's footsteps and "update" his classic book "Democracy in America" which was published in 1835. Toward that end, he traveled around the country, visiting every state, for a year. In a recent interview (http://www.pbs.org/tuckercarlson/thiswe ... ripts.html) he noted:

"... how can so different people coming from everywhere belong to a nation? How can you build a nation with Korean, Iranian, Chinese, Italian, Spanish, and so on, Hispanic? And the answer is the following. I discovered it in the middle of the road. The answer is that to be American means willing to be American. America is nothing but a sort of factory to build Americans. This is America. In Europe we live still in the illusion, the bad illusion, that to belong to a nation means to have a common blood."

I am sure that reading Levy's series of articles in Atlantic would give Gutierrez heartburn.

...Although Villaraigosa was and is a public official, he did not condemn the repeated calls for the establishment of an independent country of Aztlan or the references to this country as "AmeriKKKa" and the "United Snakes of America." In fact, Villaraigosa praised one of the participants, Jose Angel Gutierrez, Director of Mexican-American Studies Center at the University of Texas at Arlington, who has professed since 1970 that "Our devil has pale skin and blue eyes," and who once said at a MAYA (Mexican American Youth Organization, the forerunner to MEChA) meeting, "To the gringos in the audience, I have one final message to convey, 'Up yours, baby. You've had it, from now on.' "

This is a truly classic maniacal racist rant: "The border remains a military zone. We remain a hunted people. Feb. 20, 1999 -- ...Based on U.S. Census estimates, Hispanics will become the majority population in Texas by 2008, said Jose Angel Gutierrez, a founder of La Raza Unida Party and now a political science professor at University of Texas at Arlington.

"We have this bright future because we have the critical mass," Gutierrez said. "We have the means now to take government and to lead. We have to get busy to work on our skills, our abilities, our competency to build that social capital, so we can be excellent leaders....."
