A 20-year-old Willcox man has been indicted on federal illegal exportation charges after being caught trying to smuggle an assault rifle out of the country.

Trinidad Vega Jr. was arrested May 22 at the Douglas Port of Entry after customs officials noticed an unusual bulge under his clothing, according to documents filed in U.S. District Court in Tucson.

Vega was stopped and found to have an AK-47 strapped to his body, as well as a clip of ammunition for the weapon hidden in his sock, court records show.

Vega told authorities he had bought the weapon earlier that day in Tombstone and was taking it to Mexico to sell it to a man he’d arranged to purchase it for, according to court records.
