Wilson talks border control with Schwarzenegger

    By JIM HOLT

LOS ANGELES (CP) - Canada's ambassador to the United States, Michael Wilson, met briefly with California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger Monday and wasted no time bringing up the thorny issue of stiffer border crossing rules.

"That's the thing that topped our discussion - border issues," Wilson said later at a reception held in his honour. Wilson said Schwarzenegger "listened very carefully" when the two discussed pending legislation for a special immigration card that would to toughen rules for Americans travelling abroad.

Both the governor and the ambassador made a concerted effort to see one another - the former taking time from his re-election campaign and the latter making time and showing up late for his reception.

The two met at the tiny Santa Monica airport late Monday afternoon and posed briefly for photographers in front of the two countries' flags. As they shook hands, Wilson joked with the governor about not having to arm-wrestle the former Mr. Universe. Schwarzenegger laughed and told Wilson he had heard many wonderful things about him.

Once photographers were rushed out of the room, the two discussed border issues behind closed doors, Wilson said.

"The card is only one element of border control," he said after the meeting. "You cannot seal a country off, it just doesn't work. It takes good policing and good co-operation."

At the reception inside the University of California in Los Angeles, hosted by Canadian Consul General Alain Dudoit, Wilson told more than 100 people that the Security Prosperity Partnership between Canada, the United States and Mexico is a top priority for the Canadian government.

"This, I think, is going to be very, very important," he told the group. "You're going to hear a lot about this and certainly this state (California) is a very important part of that discussion."

Wilson said although California does not share a border with Canada, more than 875,000 Californians travel north to Canada every year and thousands of Canadians travel south to places such as Disneyland.

On the issue of tougher border crossing rules for Americans, Wilson said: "On the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative - the so-called passport legislation - Americans returning to the United States will have to have a card that has certain information on it and Canadians coming into the United Sates can come with a full passport or with a similar type of card."

The WHT Initiative is expected to require all travellers to and from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Bermuda to present a passport or other accepted document that clearly spells out the card-holder's identity when crossing borders.

Wilson said developing and implementing such a detailed border-crossing card is key to building more secure borders and a better economic relationship between the three countries.

So let me get this straight. Instead of working to fix the many problems California has, most of which is due to illegal immigration, Arnold spends his precious time kissing up to foreign leaders. Way to go Arnold. I'm sure your constituents are very thankful that you have their best interest at heart. Oh wait, that would be foreign interest.

The only Wilson this jerkoff should be meeting with is Pete Wilson.
