Wisconsin Governor Lashes Out Against Opponent

UNDATED (AP) -- Democratic Governor Jim Doyle has launched a television ad responding to Republican challenger Mark Green's criticism of him on immigration issues.

Doyle launched the ad Friday, just two days after Green aired an ad accusing him of wanting to give Social Security benefits to illegal immigrants.

Doyle's ad says that he has never wanted to give illegal immigrants Social Security or welfare benefits. He says he vetoed legislation making it harder for them to get benefits only because he thought it would have denied services to U-S citizens as well.

Doyle's ad also accuses Green of not doing enough to improve border security and of proposing to cut the number of police and firefighters in the state.

Green has proposed a freeze on state spending, but did not specifically call for cutting police and fire jobs. He hasn't said what cuts would have to be made to achieve the savings.
