LAS CRUCES — A Mexican woman has been sentenced to four months in prison for offering a bribe to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer.

Federal prosecutors say 25-year-old Gabriela Quintana-Hernandez of Chihuahua was sentenced Monday in federal court in Las Cruces.

She was arrested in December after offering a $2,500 bribe to an officer at the Columbus port of entry in southern New Mexico. She admitted telling the officer she would pay him if he would help her get to Albuquerque.

Prosecutors say Quintana-Hernandez didn’t have immigration documents that would have allowed her to enter the U.S. legally.

The officer reported the bribe and Quintana-Hernandez was arrested at the port.

She pleaded guilty to the bribery charge in January. She has been in federal custody since her arrest.
