Border Patrol agents from the Yuma Station have arrested a Mexican national who has previously convicted of sex crimes against a child.

According to agent Kyle Estes of the Yuma Sector Communications Division, agents apprehended two men Thursday night who had crossed the Colorado River near Somerton in an attempt to enter the country illegally.

Estes said a record check later revealed that one of the men, Jose Reyes-Acosta, is an aggravated felon with an extensive criminal history, including intimidation of a witness and child abuse in 2003, and a conviction of sexual misconduct with a minor in 2005.

Reyes-Acosta spent 18 months in prison in New Mexico and was previously deported to Mexico. He now faces prosecution by the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Yuma area residents can help the Border Patrol and U.S. Customs and Border Protection by calling 1-866-999-8727 toll-free to report suspicious activity. Callers can remain anonymous.
