The highest legal authority in Louisiana is trying to take the city of New Orleans off the list of America’s sanctuary cities.

Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry recently said the state’s largest city is a “magnet” for illegal immigrantsOpens a New Window. , due to its status as a sanctuary city. He joined the FOX Business Network to explain why he is pushing to remove “The Big Easy” from the list.

“We have a problem with illegal immigration in this country,” Landry said. “And what we’ve seen is that American citizens have been victimized by illegal immigrants who come into this country—not all of them—but many of them come in and commit a number of crimes.”

He added: “In sanctuary cities, what happens is the law enforcement officers are basically prohibited from collaborating with ICE so that we deport those illegals who are causing havoc inside of our country and inside of our communities. It’s a public safety crisis.”

As an example, Landry pointed out the death of St. John the Baptist Parish Fire Chief Spencer Chauvin, who was killedOpens a New Window. after a bus driven by an illegal immigrant—without a driver’s license—slammed into a nearby vehicle which hit and killed Chauvin. Two other firefighters were hit by the vehicle, but survived the accident.

Landry said so far, he and fellow supporters have received backing from some members of Congress.

“Both Representative Gowdy, (R-SC), and Representative Culberson (R-Texas), through their committees, have basically put pressure on the [Obama] administration, recognizing that federal grants going to these cities… if they have sanctuary city policies they could be in violation of federal law. And that if you’re in violation of federal law, you can have your funds withdrawn or withheld, and that’s starting to put pressure on these cities to reverse course.”
