Should Local Schools Admit the Latest Illegal Immigrants?

    Thursday, August 21, 2014

School districts around the country are beginning to discover where the Obama administration has moved many of the new illegal immigrants, but most voters don’t believe these youngsters should be allowed to attend local schools.

Thirty-two percent (32%) of Likely U.S. Voters think these illegal immigrants should be allowed to enroll in local public schools this fall, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Fifty-three percent (53%) disagree and say they should not be permitted to attend local schools. Fourteen percent (14%) are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

The survey of 1,000 Likely Voters was conducted on August 16-17, 2014 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.

Poll: Majority of Likely Voters Say Illegal Migrants Should Not Enroll in Public School

A poll released Thursday finds that a majority of likely voters are not on board with allowing the recent illegal immigrant minors to enroll in local schools.

According to the Department of Education, all children in the United States – regardless of legal status – are “entitled to equal access to a public elementary and secondary education,” including the tens of thousands of recent illegal immigrants from Central America.

The new Rasmussen Reports poll reveals that despite the requirement that all children receive an education in the U.S., 53 percent of likely voters do not think the new illegal arrivals should be allowed to enroll in public school this year. Thirty-two percent said they believe the illegal immigrant minors should be allowed to enroll, and 14 percent were undecided.

Since October about 63,000 unaccompanied minors and some 62,800 family units have been detained illegally entering the United States through the southern border. About 37,500 of the unaccompanied minors have been released to sponsors throughout the U.S.

“School districts around the country are beginning to discover where the Obama administration has moved many of the new illegal immigrants, but most voters don’t believe these youngsters should be allowed to attend local schools,” Rasmussen noted.

The poll of 1,000 likely voters has a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points and took place from August 16-17.
