$10,000.00 to watch grass grow? 387,000.00 on swedish massages for Rabbits

    Fox News

Can someone pay us $10K to watch grass grow? The Wastebook 2014 found the government is paying people to observe saltmarsh cordgrass in Florida. The money was used to cover “the cost to monitor grasses, restore two acres as a demonstration and publish a guide on best practices for cultivating the cordgrass.”

Rabbits were treated to pricey Swedish massages at the taxpayer’s expense, according to the Wastebook 2014 released by Sen. Tom Coburn on Wednesday. Before being euthanized, the rabbits were part of a study on the effect of massages on exercise recovery through the National Institutes of Health – the same agency looking for an Ebola cure.

One federal attorney calls it “the government’s dirty little secret”: paid administrative leave for troublesome employees. Officially, administrative leave is an “excused absence” with pay, but for some government employees it also meant golf trips and attending Mardi Gras, according to Sen. Tom Coburn’s Wastebook 2014.

The federal government spent your tax dollars helping to prove that mountain lions can in fact use a treadmill. The Wastebook 2014 reported that after eight months of training, the treadmill study found “mountain lions do not have the aerobic capacity for sustained, high-energy activity.”

It sounds like a bad bet, but choreographing a synchronized swim team of Sea Monkeys is essentially what the government tried to accomplish with your money. According to Sen. Tom Coburn’s Wastebook 2014, researchers were studying how the collective swimming motion of Sea Monkeys can affect the circulation of water.

Eight Absurd Government Projects Funded With Your Money October 22, 2014 – Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) just released Wastebook 2104, his annual list of the stupidest ways the government could think to spend your money. Sean Davis at the Federalist picks out eight projects that represent the best of the worst.

    From the article:
    4) Swedish Massages For Bunnies. A group of rabbits received daily rub downs from a “mechanical device that simulates the long, flowing strokes used in Swedish massages.” The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine of the National Institutes of Health provided $387,000 for the two year project which ended in April 2014.
The massages were given after subjecting the rabbits to exercise to measure its impact on recovery. To conduct the experiment, 18 “New Zealand White rabbits were instrumented” with “nerve cuffs for stimulation of hindlimb” leg muscles. The rabbits were “anesthetized and secured supine with one foot attached to a foot pedal.”
