When seconds count the police are still minutes away, even if your father works for the Houston Police Department. Last Friday an HPD’s 18-year-old son was at home alone when 2 intruders broke into the house. (Watch news VIDEO at bottom of post)

At first the two crooks just banged on the door, and when no one answered they went around to the back of the house and forced their way through the back door. The son’s initial reaction to seeing the criminals outside the house was to call his dad, who has been a police officer for 12 years. But soon the intruders were inside the house and the teenager grabbed his dad’s gun.

When the intruders began walking up the steps the son fired one shot and killed one of them. The other suspect ran and is still at large.

The boy’s father, Ken Patmon, is an HPD officer and said that even though his son had not received any formal training he knew he could handle himself with a firearm in this situation because of being around his dad.
“This is our home, and that’s my son. And I’m not there to protect him. We try to teach our children to do what’s right and I thank God that he is okay,” said Patmon.
Even though his dad was not there to protect him a firearm was able to do the job. And thank God this was not one of those “smart guns” that only allows the owner of the gun to fire it, or else the 18-year-old son would not have had a firearm with which to protect himself. This is something the anti-gun lawmakers should consider.
“Sometimes when you’re a criminal things come back and bite you,” said neighbor Ceja Decker.
Another neighbor is also thankful that the teenager was able to defend himself with a gun.
“His kid is at home minding his own business and there’s someone trying to break into his house,” said neighbor Warren Austin. “Luckily that kid had a way to defend himself.”
Even though the son has no official training, he plans on joining the Air Force this year.

According to khou.com there is a $5,000 reward for any information that leads to the arrest of the other suspect.
Deputies believe the second suspect took off in a dark blue Nissan Sentra. Anyone with information is asked to call Fort Bend County Crime Stoppers at 281-342-TIPS.
