SEATTLE, WA -- At least two students were injured Friday morning when a shooter opened fire at Marysville Pilchuck High School, police and witnesses told KOMO News. Squadrons of police cars swarmed to the school after receiving reports of an active shooter opening fire. At least two students were shot, and they are being airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. There was no immediate word on their conditions. Witnesses said the shooting took place in the school cafeteria. The shooter is believed to be still at large. At least 20 police cars and multiple ambulances are responding to the incident. Police: shooter dead after opening fire at Marysville-Pilchuck High School

A gunman believed to have opened fire at Marysville-Pilchuck High School Friday morning is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to two law-enforcement sources.

Police have not released details, but there are reports of as many as seven other people shot about 10:45 a.m.

Ambulances are staging around the school and police are searching room to room with guns drawn, leaving tape to mark the doors of the rooms that have been cleared.

Some students were being evacuated from the school, walking out and across the fields with their hands up. Others were being told to stay inside classrooms.

Some of the injured were taken by ambulance to an Everett hospital.
Some were being bused to a nearby church, and police are asking that parents not try to approach the school.

Ayn Dietrich-Williams, a spokeswoman for the FBI in Seattle, said agents are on their way to Marysville to offer assistance.

Washington School Shooter Jaylen Fryberg 'Happy,' 'Popular': Students

The student who opened fire at a Washington state high school Friday was described as a generally happy and popular football player who'd recently gotten into a dispute with a fellow student who'd made a racist comment.

Two law enforcement sources identified the gunman as Jaylen Ray Fryberg, a freshman at Marysville Pilchuck High School, north of Everett. He fatally shot himself after opening fire in the school's cafeteria Friday, killing another student, police said. At least four other people were injured, three of them critically.

"Everybody knew him. Everybody liked him," Bryce Vitcovitch, a member of the school's football team, told NBC station KING of Seattle. "This is just a huge shock to everybody. For the most part, he was a really happy kid."

Fryberg was smiling and waving just last week at the school's homecoming ceremony, where he was crowned freshman homecoming prince.

Bryce and other students said Fryberg "did have an incident the other day when a kid was being somewhat racist, and he punched him."

Alan Perez, another student who was in the cafeteria during the shooting, said Fryberg "got into an argument with someone who made a racist comment" a couple of weeks ago.

"I'd understand if he was angry about that, but other than that, he wasn't bullied or anything like that," Alan told KING. "He seemed like he was really happy. He seemed like a popular kid."

Fryberg's social media accounts include photos of him wearing traditional Indian dress and making numerous references to the Tulalip Tribes and hunting. Some of the pictures show him holding what appear to be hunting rifles. A law enforcement source told NBC News, however, that the gunman Friday used a small pistol, not a rifle.

More recently, Fryberg appeared to have been shattered by a breakup with a girl.

Fryberg had a very active Twitter account that included many tweets and photos referring to a girl he was dating. But on July 20, he stopped tweeting for more than a month, resuming in late August with a series of heartbroken tweets.

"I hate that I can't live without you," said one. Another said: "Tell me what your plan is.... You can't make a bond with anyone like the bond me and you have right now.... Tell me what your going to do..."
