3rd Drug Seizure In A Month For Border Patrol

April 16, 2009

For the third time in less than a month, Border Patrol agents have made a big drug bust near the Canadian border.

This time, agents assigned to Sumas Station seized three duffel bags of pot -- nearly 150 pounds of it -- likely grown in British Columbia. They also arrested two people.

The street value of the marijuana is considered to be around $750,000.

The latest bust began shortly after midnight Wednesday, when suspicious activity led agents to an area where they discovered the three large bags. Inside each one were dozens of individually wrapped packages of marijuana.

Border Patrol agents notified the Royal Canadian Mounted Police that the people trying to sneak the pot across the border may have tried to run back across the Canadian border.

After a three hour search on both sides of the border, Border Patrol agents apprehended one person on the Washington side and Canadian authorities arrested another in B.C.

The bust is the third major seizure of drugs near the Canadian border in the last month. The other two major busts included another marijuana seizure and the discovery of thousands of tablets of the drug "Ecstasy".
