5 killed, at least 12 wounded in weekend violence


A 31-year-old man and a friend were delivering a pizza in the 5400 block of North East River Road when two people approached them on foot and announced a robbery.

Five people were killed and at least 12 others were wounded across the city since Friday evening, authorities said.

Those killed included two teens, ages 15 and 18, police said.


The latest fatal shooting happened early Monday morning in the city's Galewood neighborhood.

A 26-year-old man was standing with friends in an alleyway in the 2100 block of North Merrimac Avenue about 12:15 a.m. when a gunman approached on foot, yelled gang slogans and opened fire, police said.
The man was shot in his face and was taken to Loyola University Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.
Sunday afternoon, a 44-year-old man was killed in the 2800 block of North Lotus Avenue in Belmont Cragin.
Police said the man was standing in the 2800 block of North Lotus Avenue about 2:20 p.m. when someone got out of a car and fired shots, hitting the man in the head.
The 44-year-old man was pronounced dead on the scene, police said.

He was identified as Luis Zuniga, accoridng to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. Officials there said he lived on the same block where he was shot.
Early Sunday morning, a 29-year-old man was found fatally stabbed on the Near North Side. Police found the man lying on the sidewalk in the 800 block of North Orleans Street.
He had been stabbed repeatedly in his back, police said. The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Saturday evening, an 18-year-old man was killed in Burnside. The teen was shot in his head about 5:10 p.m. Saturday in the 800 block of East 87th Place.
He died at the scene and was later identified as Johnathan Cartwright, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. Officials there could not provide the teen's home address.
Friday night, a 15-year-old boy was killed in the South Deering neighborhood, police said.
The boy and a friend were walking in the 10400 block of South Bensley Avenue when they heard a single gunshot come from a passing van. The two boys ran, and the 15-year-old boy collapsed a short distance away, police said.
The teen, who was lated identified as Deon Gilbert, was taken to University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
In non-fatal shootings:
Another shooting on the Northwest Side early Monday morning left a delivery driver in critical condition, police said.
About 12:25 a.m., the 31-year-old man was delivering a pizza in the 5400 block of North East River Road when two people approached him and tried to rob him. One of the people pulled out a handgun and shot the man in his head. The two then fled without taking anything, police said.
The man was taken in critical condition to Advocate Luthern General Hospital.
Five men and one boy were wounded in shootings across the South and West sides from Friday evening through Saturday, police said.
Four others were shot from Saturday evening through Sunday morning.
Also, a man was hospitalized after he was stabbed during a fight in Englewood Monday morning.
About 2:20 a.m. Monday, a 33-year-old man was stabbed in the 6500 block of South Lowe Avenue during a fight, police said.
The man got into a physical fight with his girlfriend's 26-year-old son, and the son stabbed the man in his face and chest. The man was taken to John H. Stroger Hospital where his condition stabilized, police said.
As of early Monday, the 26-year-old was in police custody but had not been criminally charged.
