Another Day, Another Sinkhole Emerges in Florida

Another Day, Another Sinkhole Emerges in Florida

    Jul 20, 2014, 9:58 AM ET
By ABC NEWS via GOOD MORNING AMERICA

A family remains out of its home after a sinkhole opened up in a Central Florida neighborhood.

The 120-foot wide and 30-foot deep sinkhole opened Saturday afternoon in Spring Hill.

"Out of nowhere the earth just went straight up in the air and exploded up in the air," said Margaret Helmick, who lives in the neighborhood.

Police evacuated four homes but later allowed residents to return to three of them. The area was closed off until further notice.

Engineers were called out to assess the damage and the sinkhole may later be filled with sand and cement.

Officials say sinkholes are a way of life in Florida, where there have been nearly 300 ground depressions since 2010.

SRING HILL, Fla. — A homeowner whose house is being threatened by a sinkhole returned to retrieve her belongings Sunday, and although Linda Fisher had seen photos of the situation developing in her front yard, she said seeing the yawning hole was much more shocking in person.

"It's devastating; you don't expect it," said Fisher, who had been out of town when the sinkhole swallowed first her street and then her front yard and driveway.

As she welcomed a reporter in to see the damage, she had a warning.

"Don't go to the front of the house — it's not safe," Fisher said.

The sinkhole measures about 40 feet by 40 feet and is estimated to be 30 feet deep.

"The whole front of my mom's house is on a ledge, hanging pretty much," said Michelle Parisik, adding that the scariest part is not knowing what's next.

Municipal workers from Spring Hill, which is about 50 miles north of Tampa, will check the sinkhole Monday and try to determine a plan.

So far, only the Fisher home has been evacuated and no one has been injured.
