Boston Mayor Thomas Menino wants to restrict a single private business, Chick-Fil-A, from opening any franchises in Boston. His reported remarks were,

“Chick-fil-A doesn’t belong in Boston. You can’t have a business in the city of Boston that discriminates against a population. We’re an open city, we’re a city that’s at the forefront of inclusion.”

Chick-Fil-A has come under fire from progressive groups for donating millions of dollars to pro-family organizations over the past few years. This, according to Mayor Menino, counts as discrimination.

Meanwhile, the National Organization for Marriage is promoting "Eat at Chick-Fil-A Day" for Wednesday of this week.

Please join me this Wednesday in supporting this courageous company, while at the same time sending a powerful message of support to every individual and every company with the courage to stand for marriage.

Chick-Fil-A, for their part, put out a statement that read:

The Chick-fil-A culture and service tradition in our restaurants is to treat every person with honor, dignity and respect – regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender. We will continue this tradition in the over 1,600 Restaurants run by independent Owner/Operators. Going forward, our intent is to leave the policy debate over same-sex marriage to the government and political arena.

Chick-fil-A is a family-owned and family-led company serving the communities in which it operates. From the day Truett Cathy started the company, he began applying biblically-based principles to managing his business. For example, we believe that closing on Sundays, operating debt-free and devoting a percentage of our profits back to our communities are what make us a stronger company and Chick-fil-A family.

Our mission is simple: to serve great food, provide genuine hospitality and have a positive influence on all who come in contact with Chick-fil-A.

And for this, Mayor Menino would ban the restaurant from Boston. Right now, there are only two Chick-Fil-A restaurants in Massachusetts: in Burlington, Mass. and Peabody, Mass. Northeastern University was considering a franchise for their student food court, but the students of Northeastern will have to go elsewhere for their chicken sandwich cravings for the foreseeable future.

What's more, these types of boycotts are incredibly silly. It's impossible to keep track of what company or CEO is donating money to or supporting a cause that you don't support. As was put succinctly by Jonathan Merritt at The Atlantic:

So should the 45 percent of Americans who oppose gay marriage opt for Chips Ahoy! instead of Oreos? Should they begin shopping at Belk instead of JC Penny? If they did, it wouldn't make any more sense than the endless failed calls for liberal consumers to boycott Urban Outfitters, because its owner is a conservative and Rick Santorum donor, or to not order from Domino's Pizza, because it was founded by a Catholic conservative who helped fund anti-abortion causes.

In Defense of Eating at Chick-fil-A
    By Jonathan Merritt

    Jul 20 2012, 5:30 PM ET 997

Do we really want a country where people won't do commerce with those who have beliefs different than their own?

[optional image description]When former Republican candidate for president Newt Gingrich visited a Chick-fil-A in Anderson, S.C. this January, supporters gathered outside to catch a glimpse. (Reuters)

Dan Cathy, president of one of America's largest express fast food chains, has been frying more than chicken filets this week. The Chick-fil-A executive infuriated gay and lesbian groups when he again defended his company's anti-gay marriage position in an interview this week with a Christian news outlet.

"We are very much supportive of the family -- the biblical definition of the family unit," he said. "We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that."

Not surprisingly, his comments were met with fury by those who support same-sex marriage. The company was labeled a "hate group" by many on Twitter and in the blogosphere, and drew promises of boycotts from notables including The Office star Ed Helms. Meanwhile, Americans who patronize the chain's 1,600 locations were left wondering what to do.

Should they swear off the legendary chicken sandwiches to support gay rights? Or could they eat one of the filets anyway, knowing their dollars would be but a drop in the bucket for a chain that has more than $4 billion in annual sales and donated a pittance to groups they may disagree with?

I'd argue the latter -- and this has nothing to do with my views on gay marriage. It's because Chick-fil-A is a laudable organization on balance, and because I refuse to contribute to the ineffective boycott culture that's springing up across America.

First of all, Chick-fil-A is not a hate group. In a statement released yesterday, company leaders made their commitment to equal service clear, "The Chick-fil-A culture and service tradition in our restaurants is to treat every person with honor, dignity and respect -- regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender."

As a native Atlantan, I've dined at the chicken chain more than I'd like to admit over more than two decades and even interacted with its leadership team. I've never witnessed any customer refused service or even treated differently. On the contrary, Chick-fil-A is known for offering world-class customer service to each person that walks through one of the restaurant's doors.

Additionally, the organization gives millions of dollars each year to charitable causes -- and not just to "pro-family" groups. It funds a large foster care program, several schools of a higher learning, and a children's camp. It has provided thousands of scholarships for Chick-fil-A employees to attend college and grow past the service sector where they got their workplace start. (On Friday, the company provided free meals for Aurora, Colo., policemen.)

And the company's leaders claim to do all of this out of convictions rooted in the Christian faith. Anyone who has even a cursory knowledge of the company should know that it does not hide its commitment to biblical values. Its corporate statement of purpose since 1982 has begun, "To glorify God..."

Given this, that anyone was surprised by Cathy's statements is, well, surprising. Like many conservative Christians, he does not support gay marriage.

I'm flummoxed that so many consumers are so quick these days to call for boycotts of any company that deviates from their personal or political views. For one thing, boycotts rarely cause actual pocketbook - rather than PR -- damage. Most consumers don't care enough to drive an extra mile to get the same product from someone else. And that's especially the case for companies as large as Chick-fil-A, which has prime locations on many college campuses where there is little head-to-head competition.

But my bigger question is this: In a nation that's as divided as ours is, do we really want our commercial lives and our political lives to be so wholly intermeshed? And is this really the kind of culture we want to create? Culture war boycotts cut both ways and are much more likely to meet with success when prosecuted by large groups of people, such as Christian activists, who are more numerous than gays and lesbians and their more activist supporters.

Gay and lesbian groups were famously rankled when pro-family activists reacted against Kraft for posting a photo of an Oreo cookie with rainbow-hued filling last month in honor of Gay Pride Month, and also when similar groups protested JCPenney for announcing lesbian talk show host Ellen DeGeneres would be its next spokesperson.

On both sides of our latest culture war divide, we must learn to have level-headed disagreements without resorting to accusations of hate speech and boycotts. As Josh Ozersky argued on TIME Thursday, "businesses should be judged by their products and their practices, not by their politics."

I agree: I don't care how my dry cleaner votes. I just want to know if he/she can press my Oxfords without burning my sleeves. I find no compelling reason to treat sandwiches differently than shirts.

From a business standpoint, some might say Cathy's comments were imprudent if not downright dumb. But in a society that desperately needs healthy public dialogue, we must resist creating a culture where consumers sort through all their purchases (fast food and otherwise) for an underlying politics not even expressed in the nature of the product itself.

If white meat's not your thing, try the Golden Arches. But if you want a perfectly fried chicken sandwich, Chick-fil-A, will be happy to serve you -- gay or straight. In this case, those who boycott are the ones missing out.

    Muppets Are ‘Haters’ Of Chick-Fil-A

Recently we reported that the Georgia-based fast food restaurant Chick-Fil-A has been attacked by the Left and in particular the mayor of Boston, as well as, militant homosexuals because of their biblical stand on the family and marriage. Well now they are getting attacked by…the Muppets. Yes, The Jim Henson company has decided to go after Chick-Fil-A.

According to the company’s Facebook page,

The Jim Henson Company has celebrated and embraced diversity and inclusiveness for over fifty years and we have notified Chick-Fil-A that we do not wish to partner with them on any future endeavors. Lisa Henson, our CEO is personally a strong supporter of gay marriage and has directed us to donate the payment we received from Chick-Fil-A to GLAAD.

I wish these people would say what they have really embraced. How about sexual perverts? How about sexual deviants? How about sodomites? The company is not embracing diversity and inclusiveness. They are embracing sinfulness and perversion. Consequently they are worthy of the same judgment from God as the homosexuals.

Some of the comments though gives me hope that there are those in America who see through the Lefts agenda.

“I love the double standard that Jim Henson’s company is expressing by not … accepting Christians’ belief in the biblical definition of marriage,” wrote Valorie Phillips.

Michele Sparacino also wrote, “Lisa Henson you support gay marriage, however Chick-fil-A did not ban giving your toys out. So why would you ban Chick-fil-A. I know for a fact they hire gay people. They just do not believe in same sex marriage… Is that not there (sic) freedom of speech.”

All of this was spawned when Chick-Fil-A CEO Dan Cathy did an interview with Baptist Press and said, “We are very much supportive of the family – the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that.”

The problem for the Henson Company was that they were in the midst of working with Chick-Fil-A to promote some of their toys in some of the kids meals that Chick-Fil-A offers.

Peter LaBarbera, of Americans for Truth, chimed in and said that what happened between The Henson Company and Chick-Fil-A amounted to nothing more than “fundamental intolerance of Christians.”

    WND reports,

“You cannot accuse Chick-fil-A of somehow going out of their way to bash homosexuals. It’s a consistently Christian company,” he said. Homosexual activists, however, he said, “cannot abide” the biblical proscription of homosexual behavior, and they have the same attitude toward those to following those teachings.

“You have to look at the history of the homosexual movement,” he said. “It’s all about intimidating. The reason they fear Chick-fil-A is it’s a popular, respected, growing operation.”

“That Cathy actually has the temerity to hold his own beliefs as a Christian [they believe] he has committed some sort of crime,” he said.

While The Henson Company and others are targeting Chick-Fil-A as intolerant, Chick-Fil-A continues to serve homosexuals and some claim they have even hired some. The point of this should be clear. Chick-Fil-A takes a stand on an issue and they don’t bar people from entering their establishment. They serve everyone equal. But the liberals in our society, well they are a horse of a different color. They will boycott you in a minute. They will sling mud and names around and try to cast you out of society unless you bow to their god and their morality.

Good for Chick-Fil-A! If you are not aware, Wednesday, August 1, 2012 is going to be national Chick-Fil-A day. If you have one within driving distance please show your support of the company and its stand and get the best chicken sandwich in the business! Mike Huckabee had posted a Chick-Fil-A appreciation day and Facebook has “mysteriously” removed it.

In this entire fiasco, can anyone tell who the real “haters” are? It isn’t the Christians involved.

Chicago alderman to block Chick-fil-A expansion

    DON BABWIN | July 25, 2012 07:00 PM EST | Associated Press

CHICAGO — A Chicago alderman, angered by the president of Chick-fil-A's comments that he is against gay marriage, said he will block the company from building a restaurant in his ward.

Alderman Joe Moreno said Wednesday that unless the company comes up with a written anti-discrimination policy, Chick-fil-A will not open its first free-standing restaurant in the city as it plans to do.

"They have nothing on the books that says they do not discriminate and they are open to everyone," said Moreno, whose ward is on the northwest side. "I want to see that policy before they go forward."

Moreno's comments follow an interview that Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy gave to the Baptist Press in which he said he was "guilty as charged" in support of what he called the biblical definition of a family.

The fast-food chain later said that it strives to "treat every person with honor, dignity and respect – regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender," the Boston Herald reported. The Atlanta-based company did not respond to a telephone call or email from The Associated Press.

Last week, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino told the Boston Herald he would block Chick-fil-A from opening a restaurant in the city.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel expressed similar sentiments to the Chicago Tribune, which first reported Moreno's efforts this week. He said the comments ""disrespect our fellow neighbors and residents," and therefore building the restaurant in Chicago "would be a bad investment, since it would be empty."

On Wednesday, Moreno did not dispute that Cathy had the right to say what he said. But, Moreno said, "There are consequences for freedom of speech (and) in this case the consequences are... you're not going to have your first free-standing restaurant in Chicago."

Chick-fil-A has obtained a zoning permit for the restaurant but needs approval from the City Council to divide the land, Moreno said. And in a city where the City Council rarely go against the wishes of the alderman, Chick-fil-A needs Moreno's help.

Moreno said holding up construction would be as simple as refusing to introduce an ordinance to subdivide the land where Chick-fil-A wants to build.

He said he was not worried about being sued. First, he said, there are well-documented traffic and congestion issues in the Logan Square neighborhood that he could raise to justify his decision.

He added, "We have a responsibility to look at (whether companies) are responsible actors and responsible means not being discriminatory."

National Same Sex Kiss Day Planned to Protest Chick-fil-A's Anti-Gay Stance
Monday, July 23, 2012, by Paula Forbes

    Photo: rockinfree / Flickr]

A National Same Sex Kiss Day is being organized at Chick-fil-A restaurants across the country on Friday, August 3 to protest the fried chicken chain's admitted anti-homosexual stance. It's basically what it sounds like. They want you to go to your local Chick-fil-A, make out with someone of the same sex, and post photos and videos on their Facebook page. Sounds easy enough, or at least easier than those protests in which people try to out-pun each other with clever signs.

In other Chick-fil-A news, former presidential candidate/current talking head Mike Huckabee has decided August 1 is "Chick Fil-A Appreciation Day." In a statement on his website, Huckabee says he's cranky that "a great American story [like Chick-fil-A] is being smeared by vicious hate speech and intolerant bigotry from the left."

And the Jim Henson Company has ceased a partnership with Chick-fil-A because of the controversy. CEO Lisa Henson has recommended the company donate any money they made from the deal to LGBT advocacy group GLAAD. And as previously noted, Boston mayor Thomas Menino has already spoken out against Chick-fil-A. Will the political leanings of a fast food chain be the final straw in the American culture wars? Stay tuned to find out.

    Dems Pledge to Ban Chick-fil-A
Posted on July 26, 2012 by Conservative Byte

The unemployment rate in the city of Chicago is approximately 9.8 percent, well above the national average. Since Monday night, one 17-year-old boy has been shot and 13 others have been wounded in shootings across the city. And that’s just the most recent wave of shootings to plague the city – dozens more have been shot over the last few weeks.

And Mayor Rahm Emanuel is taking action: he’s banning Chick-Fil-A.

The fast-food chicken restaurant has come under increasing fire from major Democratic politicians including Emanuel and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, both of whom have pledged to keep the dreaded chain from poisoning the minds of their constituents. Said Emanuel: “They disrespect our fellow neighbors and residents. This would be a bad investment, since it would be empty.”

Said Emanuel: “They disrespect our fellow neighbors and residents. This would be a bad investment, since it would be empty.”

What exactly did Chick-Fil-A do to “disrespect” its neighbors? The president of the company, Dan Cathy, gave an interview in which he stated, “We don’t claim to be a Christian business … [Christianity] is about a personal relationship. Companies are not lost or saved, but certainly individuals are. But as an organization we can operate on biblical principles. So that is what we claim to be.” And he added with regard to the company’s support of WinShape Foundation, “That morphed into a marriage program in conjunction with national marriage ministries.” Does the company support the traditional family? Said Cathy, “guilty as charged … We are very much supportive of the family – the biblical definition of the family unit ….”

Chick-Fil-A has not turned away a single gay customer because the customer was gay. Chick-Fil-A has not discriminated against either employees or customers. But Democrats want to shut them down anyway, because they don’t stay silent on the issue of same-sex marriage. Dan Savage, founder of the Obama-endorsed It Gets Better anti-bullying campaign, has already taken to Twitter to try to define the term “Chick-Fil-A” as a form of anal sex – just as he did with Rick Warren and Rick Santorum when they failed to endorse same-sex marriage. This is bullying at its worst. And it shows the desperation of Democrats who will do anything – anything – to misdirect public attention from their dramatic policy ineptitude.

    Chick-fil-A chief spokesman dies

    Reuters 3:59 p.m. CDT, July 27, 2012

Don Perry, the long-time head of Chick-fil-A's public relations department, died unexpectedly on Friday, the company said, even as the fast food chain tried to negotiate a PR firestorm over its president's recent comments on gay marriage.

The Atlanta-based chain did not give a cause of death for Perry. Local media, citing Chick-fil-A franchise owners, said Perry had suffered a heart attack.

"Don was a member of our Chick-fil-A family for nearly 29 years," the company said in a statement. "He was a well-respected and well-liked media executive in the Atlanta and University of Georgia communities, and we will all miss him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family."

Chick-fil-A has been in the center of a media storm after remarks by its president, Dan Cathy, this month.

Cathy, son of Chick-fil-A's founder and current chairman, told an online religious newspaper that he supports "the biblical definition of the family unit" and that supporters of gay marriage were "arrogant."

Various politicians jumped on the comment. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino wrote a sharply worded letter to Dan Cathy, suggesting the company was not welcome in the city.

It has been a rare time in the spotlight for the privately owned chain, which has some 1,600 restaurants around the country selling popular fried-chicken sandwiches, waffle fries and peach milkshakes.

Perry, a native of rural Valdosta, Ga., and a 1974 graduate of the University of Georgia, joined Chick-fil-A in 1983 to launch the public relations department at the growing company.

"My expression routinely is 'there are no dull days,'" he told alumni publication Georgia Magazine in a profile published in June. "You just don't know what's going to happen moment to moment."

    Chick-fil-A demonstrations

A growing number of politicians and citizens alike have made their thoughts known about the marriage views of Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy. Cathy, whose company has a history of espousing Christian views, recently said the company backs “traditional” marriage (as opposed to same-sex marriage). Supporters of Chick-fil-A, led by Mike Huckabee, have organized a Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day for August 1, with GLAAD and other gay rights groups promoting protests on the same day and a same-sex “kiss day” for August 3.

Attacks on Christianity are Designed to Silence Christians and Keep them Home on Election Day

Rush Limbaugh said that the attack on a business like Chick-fil-A is tactical. It’s “a direct assault on Christianity — a direct assault on Christians — with economic punishment thrown in, including threats from government officials that are in direct violation of the Constitution.”From its earliest days, Christianity has been attacked because Christians viewed the State as a “minister of God” (Rom 13:4) and not a god. In some circumstances they “must obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29), including Caesar. Dictatorial governments that believe they are god don’t like competition. That’s why in the French and Russian revolutions, God was persona non grata. The same was true in North Korea, Cuba, and Communist China. It’s been said that “we owe the moral force which won our Independence” on the puritan pulpit.[1]
The annual Election Sermon bears witness that our founders “began their civil year and its responsibilities with an appeal to Heaven, and recognized Christian morality as the only basis of good laws.” In addition, the clergy were often consulted by the civil authorities in the colonies, “and not infrequently the suggestions from the pulpit, on election days and other special occasions, were enacted into laws. The statute-book, the reflex of the age, shows this influence. The State was developed out of the Church.”

Enemies of freedom understood the impact that Christians and Christianity had on America. Alexis de Tocqueville observed long ago:

“On the eve of the revolution, in his last-ditch attempt to stave off impending catastrophe, Edmund Burke reminded the House of Commons of the inseparable alliance between liberty and religion among Englishmen in America.”[2]

Many Christian pastors today are unaware of this history with the result that they avoid the topic of politics. Politics is said to be dirty. Isn’t the pulpit the place where dirt (sin) is to be exposed and washed away through a redemptive process?

Paul told the Ephesian elders that he did not shrink from declaring to them the “whole purpose of God” (Acts 20:27). When confronted by the Roman government, he declared his Roman citizenship (Acts 22:25–30) and later appealed to Caesar for justice (25:7–12). In time the Roman Empire fell and Christianity marched on.

Paul repeats the commandments prohibiting adultery, murder, and theft (Rom. 13:9), and sums up his specific exhortation on the law with the general command to “love your neighbor as yourself” (13:9). These instructions came after he informed his fellow-Christians that the civil magistrate is a “minister of God” (13:4) who is to make a determination between good and evil behavior (13:3). It’s these truths that secularists despise. That’s why they are on the attack and have silent pulpits as their unwitting allies.

These commandments have multiple social applications. The civil magistrate is to love his neighbor by not burdening him with excessive taxation and bureaucratic entanglements to frustrate his God-endowed freedoms to earn a living and provide for his family.

No doubt the magistrate is to work for a civil order that results in a “tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity” (1 Tim. 2:2).

In the first-century, all that these Christians could do was to appeal to God with “entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings” since they had no freedom to petition the Roman Empire with their political wishes (1 Tim. 2:1).

We have that freedom and right. We can “petition the government for a redress of grievances.” It’s written right in the Constitution. God through His mercy has established the United States as a civil society in which we can through our voice and vote make changes for the betterment of all. To remain silent in the face of evil is a grave sin.
