Britain Opens Army To Foreign Nationals As Youth Increasingly Refuse To Sign Up

Amidst the British Army's worst troop shortage since 2010, foreign nationals will now be allowed to enter military ranks according to a policy change by the Ministry of Defence announced Monday. What essentially amounts to a mercenary recruitment drive is meant to stem the tide of a worsening recruitment crisis in the armed forces as local youths increasingly refuse to sign up.
“Foreign and Commonwealth troops have historically been important and valued sources of recruitment for the British army and I welcome the recruitment limit increase,” Mark Francois, a member of the defence select committee, told the Daily Telegraph.
The army is hoping its openness to foreign nationals — which also includes the Royal Navy and RAF — will bolster total troop numbers by an extra 1,350 joining each year.



The policy will apply to Commonwealth countries only, which includes Australia, India, Canada, Kenya and Fiji. Previously citizens of these countries had to demonstrate British residency for the prior five years, a restriction that's now been lifted.
It's also an expansion of a current policy which under special rules allows citizens of Ireland and Gurkhas from Nepal to join. The Royal Navy and RAF will open up their admissions effectively immediately, while the army will begin early next year.
Defence select committee member Mark Francois said further after spending a year studying the recruitment crisis: “The army is disappearing before our eyes and will continue to do so until Capita are sacked.” He was taking aim at the business service provider that the UK government contracts with to run the army’s recruitment campaign.



Via the BBC/data from British Ministry of DefencA recent National Audit Office report (an independent government watchdog group) from this year found the armed forces are short of 8,200 soldiers, sailors and air personnel, out of a total combined forces number approaching 150,000. The NAO said that it found the army was undergoing the worst shortage since 2010.
The shortage comes as both Russia and the West are increasingly ramping up military exercises and mutual "shows of force" in the northern European region, though we can only imagine what the pundits would say if it were Russia engaging in a public campaign to recruit foreign nationals from outside its borders.

Vandals have trashed the Garden of Remembrance opened to commemorate the fallen ahead of the First World War centenary in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Unidentified attackers uprooted memorial crosses and scattered poppy wreaths placed beside Edinburgh’s iconic Scott Monument in Princes Street Gardens, which separates the medieval Old Town from the Georgian New Town, the Edinburgh Evening News reports.
“We can confirm that at some point during the early hours of Saturday November 3, sections of the Edinburgh Garden and Field of Remembrance beside the Scott Monument in Princes Street Gardens were subjected to an act of vandalism. A number of items had been wilfully uprooted and pushed over,” read a joint statement issued by Legion Scotland, the Scottish wing of the Royal British Legion, and Poppy Scotland, which organises the annual Scottish Poppy Appeal for Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday.
“When our staff and volunteers arrived for duty yesterday morning they were understandably distressed by what they found. The incident was immediately reported to the police and we then set about restoring the disrupted sections. This was completed by late morning.
“This is a truly deplorable and disrespectful act of malicious violence which has caused immense upset to countless people.
“The Garden and Field of Remembrance is a very special place and thousands of locals and visitors alike spend time reflecting and remembering there each year.
“Hundreds of hours are spent by our staff and volunteers planting more than 8000 remembrance symbols that are returned to us by supporters across the country. Scores of remembrance wreaths are laid by representatives of a wide spectrum of organizations during a service to remember the fallen at the opening of the Garden.”
The city’s Lord Provost — the Scottish equivalent of Lord Mayor — called the incident “deeply troubling”.
“[T]he garden of remembrance is Edinburgh’s tribute to the fallen and the idea of it being treated with anything but the utmost respect is devastating,” he asked, urging “anyone with information [about the incident] to contact the police immediately.”
“This is a reckless and thoughtless act and we need the public’s help to trace whoever did this,” added Inspector Alan Struthers for the police.
“We have already conducted local enquiries. The gates [to Princes Street Gardens] were locked so the person or persons who did this would’ve had to climb over the fence. “We would ask if anyone saw anything suspicious to speak to a police officer or contact us on 101, quoting incident number 1318.”

Foreign nationals from Commonwealth nations who have never lived in the UK will be allowed to join the British Armed Forces, with African media outlets already advertising the news.

Ministry of Defence chiefs hope scrapping current residency requirements for Commonwealth citizens will boost the number of foreign personnel enlisted each year from 200 to 1,350, against the backdrop of army bosses struggling to hit recruitment targets, the Daily Telegraph reports.
Rules requiring Commonwealth citizens to have lived in the UK for five years before applying for service were previously lifted in 2016 for some specialist roles including metalsmiths and medical technicians, with the number capped at 200 annually across the Army, Royal Navy, and RAF.
But under the move announced Monday, overseas applicants will be considered for every role, according to The Telegraph, with recruits given “exempt immigration control” status for as long as they serve, and after four years they can apply for British citizenship.

A week ahead of the news appearing in the UK press, information on the new opportunities in the British armed forces which will be available for Kenyan nationals under the rules change were already being publicised across local media in the African nation.
TUKO, a major news and entertainment website in Kenya, tells would-be applicants: “Anyone travelling to the UK is required to be in possession of a visa. In this case, if you successfully earned an opportunity to join the British Army, you will be subject for an exempt from immigration control.”
Armed Forces Minister Mark Lancaster said: “As an outward-looking nation, Britain has always counted on the dedicated service of our friends from the Commonwealth to keep this country safe.
“From Australia to Jamaica, to Fiji and South Africa, Commonwealth recruits are already playing a key role in our Armed Forces.
“We’re stepping up the numbers of recruits from the Commonwealth, knowing that they will bring key skills and dedicated service to our military.”

While ministers claimed Britain would gain “perspective,” “cultural understanding,” and “an operational advantage over our adversaries” as a result of the move, MPs reportedly said it highlighted the recruitment crisis, with a report earlier this year finding the armed forces 8,200 personnel short.
Mark Francois, who sits on the Defence Select Committee, said he welcomed the announcement, but that it “cannot excuse” Capita, the business service provider contracted to run the armed forces’ recruitment campaign, whose work he described as an “unmitigated disaster.”
“The army is disappearing before our eyes and will continue to do so until Capita are sacked,” he told The Telegraph, lamenting that, “according to evidence given recently to the Defence Committee, the army will be lucky to achieve 50 per cent of its recruiting figures this year.”
Mr Francois produced a report last year warning that the British military was “hollowing out” as a result of problems with recruitment, which recommended the armed forces do more to attract ethnic minorities and women.

Breitbart London previously reported how the ‘Army Belonging 2018’ campaign aimed at promoting diversity of religion, gender, sexuality, and ethnicity within the ranks of the armed forces came under fire at the beginning of this year, with critics asserting that identity politics were not the answer to recruitment woes.
“The army, like the rest of government, is being forced down a route of political correctness,” warned former British army commander in Afghanistan, Colonel Richard Kemp CBE.
“What is most important is that the army is full of soldiers. It is of secondary importance that they reflect the composition of society.
“The main group of people who are interested in joining aren’t worried so much about whether they are going to be listened to… they are going to be attracted by images of combat.”
He added: “Of course the more people from all parts of society who join the better, but it’s even more important to fill the army up with people who want to fight and want to be soldiers and this I don’t think will do that.”

I have just been reading about the last hundred years of the Roman Empire and how they had to conscript Barbarians in to the Legions because their own were no longer keen on fighting.
