California’s for the Rich! Poor People Get Out Now!

    June 5, 2009

    Commentary:

    Republicans: California’s for the Rich!

    Poor People Get Out Now!

    By Willie L. Pelote, Sr.

“When you have an unemployment rate as high as it is in this state, it should be a signal to people to look for jobs in other states with more jobs and a lower cost of living. . . We have had policies subsidizing poverty in this state for years, and we can’t keep doing that.â€

This is the poster child of how and why California is crashing. A big union state with millions of illegals probably responsible for some of these numbers in the polls. As if California needs to "drive out" more businesses. These people are so stupid or they truly are socialists. We need "0" tax increases on anyone, including oil, businesses etc. Whats going to be left. Mexicans and unions? What the heck to they produce.

Those in power decided sometime in mid 70's that outsourcing and importing poor undereducated people would be good for the economy (the thinking astounds me)since then the middle class has been dying a slow death California is simply a view of our future, it's like a huge domino setup and all we needed was our last and current administration to kick over the first one where they end is anyones guess.
I'm old with many opinions few solutions.

    • 74% of California voters support increasing tobacco taxes on tobacco.

    • 73% of California voters support an oil extraction tax on oil companies that every other oil producing state has.

    • 63% of California voters support closing the tax loophole that allows corporations to avoid reassessment of newly purchased property.

    • 63% of California support raising the state income tax for top earners (ten percent for individuals earning more than $272,000 a year & eleven percent for individuals earning more than $544,000 a year.

    • 59% of California voters support prohibiting corporations from offsetting more than fifty percent of their taxes through tax credits.[/b]
These taxes won't come anywhere close to closing our current $6 billion and growing deficit. For example there are not that many smokers remaining in CA, and the Enviro's block all new oil drilling.

The Corporate ones would not raise much money, and "taxing the rich" does not bring in much more because many of them will leave the state!

Taxing anything or anyone is not going to help with the water shortages.

The tax would be on already existing oil and gas production.

OK fine: "Total royalties paid to the United States treasury amounted to $169 million for oil, plus an additional $5.35 million for natural gas, an increase of nearly 80% when compared to the previous year. Half of all revenues generated are distributed to the State of California."

So currently the State receives $87 million a year in royalties, in a record year. If a new tax raised another $87 million that is a long way from closing a $6 billion budget hole. However if more oil drilling was allowed, we could get probably $100 million in new royalties, another $100 million from the new tax, and at least $200 million by taxing the workers salaries and Corporate income. In other words allowing more oil drilling would bring in five times more money than just adding a new tax to existing drilling.

Part of this got lost someplace.

California is currently ranked 4th in the nation among oil producing states, behind Louisiana, Texas and Alaska.

Kern County and the Los Angeles Basin are the major sources of CA. oil.

That is only for offshore oil.
