Weekend gun toll in Chicago: 40 wounded, 5 killed, including boy, 13


Two people, including a 13-year-old boy, were shot to death and at least 11 people were wounded in separate shootings in the city Sunday.

Five dead, 40 wounded in city shootings since Friday afternoon


The weekend toll from gun violence in Chicago is five dead and at least 40 wounded, and includes a 13-year-old boy who was fatally shot on a sidewalk in Marquette Park.

Demureye Macon was gunned down in the 6600 block of South Talman Avenue around 8:35 p.m. Sunday, according to Police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro.


Demureye was found lying on a sidewalk with a gunshot wound to his torso, Alfaro said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No one was reported in custody this morning.

The other people killed over the weekend included:

• A 24-year-old man was shot to death and two people were wounded in the 8500 block of Escanaba Avenue in the South Chicago neighborhood at 11 p.m. Sunday, Alfaro said.

Miguel Hernandez was on the front porch of his home when a light-colored sedan drove by and someone inside fired shots in his direction, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Hernandez suffered a gunshot wound to the right side of his head and was pronounced dead at the scene, Alfaro said.
An 18-year-old woman and a 35-year-old man were also wounded in the same shooting.
The woman, who was standing on the sidewalk, was struck in her left leg and was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital where she is listed in stable condition, Alfaro said.
The 35-year-old, who was also on the sidewalk, was shot in his right hand. He was transported to South Shore Hospital where he stabilized, Alfaro said.
• A 23-year-old man was shot and killed when a passenger jumped out of a black sedan and opened fire in the 4500 block of South Hermitage Avenue, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The man was identified as Jose Rios, 23, of the 4300 block of South Paulina Street, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. He was pronounced dead at 6:59 a.m. at Mount Sinai, according to the office.
• A fourth homicide took place in Englewood on Friday night. The victim was among three people were shot about 10:15 p.m. in an alley behind the 5700 block of South Aberdeen Street. , police said.
Malachi Baldwin, 27, of the 5600 block of South Elizabeth Street, was shot in the head and died on the scene, police said. A 25-year-old man was shot in the abdomen and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center. A 63-year-old man was shot in the hand and taken to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center in good condition.
The three were outside when two people opened fire from a gangway, police said.
• A fifth person was killed after a gunman opened fire in a West Englewood barbershop Friday afternoon, hitting three people. The shooting happened around 2 p.m. in the 1900 block of West 59th Street, an official said.

A 22-year-old man was shot in the chest and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition, said Police News Affairs Officer Thomas Sweeney. He was pronounced dead at 3 p.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and was identified as Deandre Ellis of the 5700 block of South Laflin Street, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
A 44-year-old man was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital in serious condition with a wound to the chest, and the third victim, a 31-year-old man, was wounded in the hand and taken to Holy Cross Hospital.
Among the shootings overnight:
• A 30-year-old man was shot in the 7300 block of South Ridgeland Avenue in the South Shore neighborhood around 12:20 a.m. Monday, Alfaro said.
The man was wounded in his lower back while he was walking on the sidewalk. He was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was stable, Alfaro said.
• About 20 minutes earlier, around midnight, a 34-year-old man was shot in the 5300 block of South Kedzie Avenue in the Gage Park neighborhood, Alfaro said.
The man was shot in the groin area and was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was stable, Alfaro said. No other details were immediately available about the incident.
• An 18-year-old man was in serious condition after being shot in the 3200 block of North Long Avenue in the Cragin neighborhood around 10:45 p.m. Sunday, Alfaro said.
The man was sitting in a car when “several males” came up to him and started yelling gang slogans, Alfaro said. The man suffered a gunshot to his shoulder as he tried to drive away, Alfaro said.
He stopped a few blocks away in the 5600 block of West Belmont Avenue, where the ambulance was called. He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center where he is listed in serious condition, Alfaro said. No one is in custody as result of the incident.
• Around 10:10 p.m., a 22-year-old man was seriously wounded in a shooting in the 3500 block of West Huron Street in the East Garfield Park neighborhood, Alfaro said.
The man was driving in a minivan westbound on Huron Street when he was shot in the upper part of his back. He was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital where is listed in serious condition, Alfaro said.
• Around 10 p.m., a 16-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man were wounded in a gang-related shooting in the 600 block of East 38th Place in the Ida B. Wells neighborhood, Alfaro said.
The two were walking in the street when a light-colored car pulled up and someone inside fired shots.
The 16-year-old was shot in the left leg and left arm and was transported in stable condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital, Alfaro said.
The 18-year-old suffered a graze wound to his right hand and was transported in stable condition to Mercy Hospital, Alfaro said.
• Around 9:30 p.m., an 18-year-old man was wounded in the leg in the 2100 block of West 68th Place in the West Englewood neighborhood.
The man was standing on a sidewalk when he heard shots and felt pain in his leg, Alfaro said.
He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center where he is in stable condition, Alfaro said. No one is in custody as a result of the incident.
• Around 6:15 p.m. a 33-year-old man was shot in the foot in the 4400 block of South Prairie Avenue in the Bronzeville neighborhood, police said, citing preliminary information.
The 33-year-old got himself to Mercy Hospital where his condition had stabilized, police said.
• In a separate attack that police said was gang-related, a 20-year-old man was shot in the shoulder in the 3200 block of East 91st Street about 12:30 p.m. in the South Chicago neighborhood, police said.

That man also took himself to a hospital, Advocate Trinity, and his condition had stabilized, police said.
