DENVER (AP) — A Republican congressman from Colorado says he was not trying to undermine President Barack Obama's military policy by urging generals to resign in protest.

U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn made the remarks in response to a question at a gathering in Colorado Springs last week. Lamborn said "a lot of us" were urging generals to resign and "go out in a blaze of glory" if they disagreed with administration policy.

The remarks drew sharp condemnation, most recently from fellow Colorado Republican Rep. Mike Coffman. On Sunday night, Coffman tweeted that, as a Marine combat veteran, he keeps his politics "off the battlefield."

Lamborn's re-election campaign says the congressman was referencing past discussions with generals about budget cuts rather than any protest against the president's campaign against Islamic militants in Iraq and Syria.
