Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper Claims He Had No Idea Anti- Gun Laws Would Be Controversial

On Friday, Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper made an entire roomful of sheriffs facepalm when he said he was unaware they wanted to meet with him in 2013 to discuss their concerns over proposed gun laws until it was too late and that he had no idea the measures would be so controversial.

According to the Denver Post, Hickenlooper also told the County Sheriffs of Colorado at their biannual meeting that he regretted not having all the facts when he signed the bills into law.
Hickenlooper signed the first gun bills into law in March 2013. One bill expanded background checks to private sales. Another banned
weapon magazines with more than 15 rounds, a move that caused Colorado-based magazine producer Magpul to begin plans to move most of its operations out of state.
"If we'd known that it was going to divide the state so intensely, we probably would have thought about it twice," Hickenlooper said to the sheriffs, according to the Daily Sentinel in Grand Junction.
Two months after the bills were signed into law, 55 of Colorado's 62 elected sheriffs filed suit, saying the regulations violated the Second Amendment. A federal judge ruled the sheriffs didn't have standing to sue in their official capacity, but allowed term-limited sheriffs to sue as individuals. Ten sheriffs are now part of the suit, said attorney Dave Kopel.
Montezuma County Sheriff Dennis Spruell took to Facebook with his reaction to the governor, which went viral quickly.

"Everybody in the state of Colorado knew we wanted to talk to him about the gun bills," Spruell said. "How could he not know that?"
One of the sheriffs asked Hickenlooper why he talked to pro-gun control advocate Mayor Michael Bloomberg about gun laws and not speak with any sheriffs. Hickenlooper denied that he spoke with Bloomberg but in phone records obtained by RevealingPolitics.com it shows that he did.

Videos: Colorado Governor Melts Down Over Gun Control Bill He Signed

    Guy Benson | Jun 19, 2014

Katie touched on this story earlier in the week, but new developments demand a follow-up. Initially, the story was that Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper, a Democrat, had apologized to a group of sheriffs for failing to meet with them prior to signing a controversial package of gun control legislation into law. The issue whipped up such a tempest in the state that two Democratic Colorado Senators were recalled from office by gun rights supporters, including the chamber's president. Against that backdrop, and with his own re-election contest on the horizon, Hickenlooper is eager to reclaim his brand as a rugged independent with Colorado values. During his mea culpa session with the sheriffs, the governor claimed that he never discussed gun control with former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, an anti-gun crusader. He wanted to set that record straight. One small problem: Phone records prove that he wasn't telling the truth. Revealing Politics nailed him to the wall with this video:

"Well, let's stick to the facts. I never talked to Mayor Bloomberg. Again, that's been out in the press and all this stuff…"
When official records exposed Hickenlooper's lie, he turned tail and changed his story:
Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper acknowledged that he did indeed speak with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg during last year’s protracted political battle over gun control legislation, something he appeared to deny while addressing a group of Colorado sheriffs on Friday...Complete Colorado, which first reported the governor’s statement, had already obtained phone records from Hickenlooper’s cell phone showing that he did speak with Bloomberg last year...On Monday afternoon, Hickenlooper’s office acknowledged that the governor spoke carelessly. “The governor often jokes about his ability to put his foot in his mouth, because he does,” said Eric Brown, the governor’s spokesman... In no way did the governor intend to mislead the sheriffs or anyone else.”

This was all just a humorous misunderstanding, really, not an effort to mislead. Sure. Unfortunately for the governor, the videos weren't behind him. At the same forum with sheriffs, Hickenlooper became exasperated when another attendee called him out for ducking a meeting with them before the fact. He blamed his scheduling staff for the oversight, claiming that he had no idea the sheriffs were trying to secure a meeting with him. When a questioner pushed back on that assertion, the governor dropped an f-bomb (content warning):

To recap: Hickenlooper lied about talking with Bloomberg, stated he had no idea law enforcement officials were trying to get a face-to-face with him during the controversy, then used some salty language when challenged on that point. Perhaps worst of all, however, was this answer, which betrays appallingly poor judgment. Hickenlooper admits that he didn't have the relevant facts about his own law before he signed it, conceding that it's been ineffective:

“I think a lot of people didn’t know how much emotion was gonna come out of the high-capacity magazines. [We] probably would have looked for something different or a different approach. One of my staff made the commitment that we would sign it it got passed. To be honest, no one in our office thought it would get through the legislature…In the end, how important really was it? After all the kerfuffle, I went back to try to get some facts we should have had at the beginning. They told me there are roughly 300,000 magazine that carry more than 15 rounds in the state of Colorado already…How’s a police enforcement officer going to tell which is the old one and which is the new one? How much of a difference is it gonna make if there are that many? Some punk kid in Aurora wants to go out there and start spray shooting his neighborhood, which is still happening, in Aurora, in Denver, in Colorado Springs. It’s not like you’re gonna have a hard time finding a magazine.”
Fact gathering…after the fact. Bravo. And who's to blame for that epic failure of governance? Don't look at me, Hickenlooper pleads. My staff made me do it. From sensitive scheduling to bill-signing pledges, the governor would like Coloradans to believe that like his staff is calling all the shots. That would be the same staff that wrongly predicted that the bill would never make it through the legislature, and the same staff that…wasn't elected to make important decisions. You'd think Hickenlooper's dishonesty, buck-passing and terrible choices encapsulated in this one meeting alone should serve as sufficient cause for Colorado voters to show him the door in November. We shall see. The Republican gubernatorial primary is currently a very close race between two former Congressmen: Rep. Bob Beauprez and anti-illegal immigration hardliner Tom Tancredo, who ran for governor and lost four years ago. Democratic groups are running ads boosting Tancredo, a meddling tactic that may sound familiar. Voters will make their choice next Tuesday.

Hickenlooper Flip-Flops Gun Control Stance, AGAIN!

By Eric Reed on June 28, 2014 in BuzzPo, Civil Rights, Gun control, Politics

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper has been flip-flopping his gun control stance more than a freshly caught Sunday afternoon bass reeled into your fishing boat!
Hickenlooper stated last week that he only signed the magazine ban for “several rather baloneyous reasons.” (No, baloneyous is not an actual word either).
Hickenlooper alleged that he didn’t know that over 300,000 magazines holding over 15 rounds already existed in his state of Colorado. He further claimed that he had no idea that the Colorado Sheriff’s deemed the law to be unconstitutional, and impossible to enforce. If that’s not “baloneyous” enough, there’s more. Hickenlooper further stated that his staff didn’t realize how strongly opposed Colorado voters actually were to gun control.
But that “baloneyous” happened last week. Now, the Denver Post has just reported that Hickenlooper once again favors the ban. The Post stated, “The Governor said Friday that any promises made by staffers were at his own direction” and if the ban were on his desk today, “I’d sign it again!”
But if that’s not enough, there’s more disgusting behavior from the governor. Hickenlooper originally said he never spoke to Michael Bloomberg before signing the unconstitutional bill into law. But that was an obvious lie, as now the governor has freely admitted to speaking with Bloomberg before signing the bill! Hickenlooper insists that the Bloomberg conversation had no bearing on his decision though. Yeah, right!
Sadly, many elected officials flip-flop from time to time, but John Hickenlooper is changing his mind more than an 8 year-old child! It’s obviously just another sad attempt to “play politics,” but this one backfired on him.
The Denver Post claims they’ve made several interview requests to hopefully have Governor Hickenlooper clarify his stance on the law. The governor has repeatedly denied all interview requests. The Denver Post need not worry though. Give Hickenlooper a few days, and he’ll probably change his mind.

Hickenlooper Re-Reverses Himself on Colorado’s Magazine Ban

    Posted on June 27, 2014

Colorado's Gov. John Hickenlooper, who recently expressed misgivings about signing the state's 15-round magazine limit into law, now says he supports it again.

In other words, he was for it, before he was against it, before he was for it.

Last week, Hickenlooper said that he signed the magazine ban only for several rather baloneyous reasons. No, "baloneyous" is not a real word, but Hickenlooper's reasons don't sound like real reasons.

Hickenlooper said he didn't know that people in Colorado already owned 300,000 magazines holding more than 15 rounds. He said he didn't know that the state's sheriffs thought the ban was unconstitutional and impossible to enforce. He said his staff failed to anticipate how strongly voters were opposed to gun control. And, he said some unnamed member of his staff promised some other unnamed person that he would sign the ban, thinking it wasn't going to pass the legislature anyway, and he didn't want to renege on the promise.

But that was last week. Now, the Denver Post reports, after taking flak from a gun control supporter for walking back on the ban, "The governor said Friday that any promises made by staffers were at his own direction" and that if the ban were on his desk today, "I'd sign it again." Hickenlooper's spine must be about as stout as 6-pound monofilament, because the gun control supporter was former senate president John Morse, who was removed from office in a recall election after championing the magazine ban and other gun control legislation through the senate.

In a related flip-flop, Hickenlooper previously claimed that he had not spoken to anti-gun activist Michael Bloomberg before signing the magazine ban and separate legislation to impose "universal" checks on firearm transfers. But that claim was discovered to have been a lie, so Hickenlooper now admits that he spoke to Bloomberg, but claims that it didn't affect his decision to sign the legislation.

The Post reports that Hickenlooper has repeatedly declined the newspaper's request for an interview "to have the governor explain his videotaped June 13 comments and their apparent contradiction with published accounts of the debate and the gun laws' passage."

Perhaps the Post should wait a week and make another request for an interview; by then, Hickenlooper may have changed his mind.
