Cop Who Shot Black Chicago Teen 16 Times Charged With Murder

Officer Jason Van Dyke was charged with first-degree murder more than a year after the incident.

CHICAGO (AP) — A white Chicago police officer has been charged with murder in the fatal shooting a black teenager.

Charges announced Tuesday come as the city prepares to release a squad-car video of Officer Jason Van Dyke shooting 17-year-old Laquan McDonald 16 times on Oct. 20, 2014.

The state's attorney's office said in a news release that Van Dyke has been charged with first degree murder.

People who have seen the video say it shows McDonald armed with a small knife and walking away from officers.

Van Dyke opens fire from about 15 feet and keeps shooting after the teen falls to the ground.

An autopsy says he was shot at least twice in the back.

Some worry the images could lead to unrest as in Baltimore and Ferguson, Missouri, after police-involved deaths.

A white Chicago police officer who shot a black teenager 16 times has turned himself in at the Cook County courthouse where he's expected to face a murder charge.

Trailed by reporters and photographers, Officer Jason Van Dyke walked into the courthouse Tuesday morning.

An official close to the investigation told The Associated Press' Don Babwin that county prosecutors are expected tocharge him with murder on Tuesday.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity so as not to pre-empt the expected charges.

The Oct. 20, 2014, shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald was captured on a squad car's dashcam, and a judge has given the city until the end of Wednesday to release it publicly.

Several people who have seen the video say it shows McDonald armed with a small knife and walking away from several officers. An autopsy report says he was shot at least twice in his back.

Oh that is good news to me. Police officers can not continue to get away with murdering civilians, no matter what their race. That awful shooting in North Carolina of white student Peyton Strickland, by that Wilmington NC Sheriff's Deputy, Chris Long, is one I'll never ever get over, like all the rest of them. You wrongfully take a life, you're guilty of murder, whether you're a cop or not, whether your victim is black or white. Chris Long shot an unarmed Peyton Strickland through the door as Peyton is reaching to open it to meet and greet the police officers who were there on a warrant looking for stolen Playstations, that of course weren't there. They even killed his dog, Blaze. Grand Jury refused to indict, I believe because the wife of a local cop was on the jury and intimidated the jury since she could have found out their names by serving with them.

This crazy crap has to stop and the only way to stop it is to hold police offices accountable for their crimes, the same as civilians. You know this is what the Black Lives Matter protest movement is really all about. It started over the wrongful slaying of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman, the Neighborhood Watch Guy who had an in with the police, and grew with the additional slayings by police officers of other unarmed black victims in other cities.

I don't really understand why anyone would be against that organization's efforts to stop these crimes and hold people who commit them accountable.
