Clintons 'dead broke' after White House? Actually, they earned over $12M that year

As Hillary Clinton backpedaled this week on comments that she and Bill Clinton were "dead broke" after leaving the White House, financial disclosure forms shed more light on just how shaky that claim really was.
Technically, Bill and Hillary Clinton were in debt when they left the White House. Financial forms filed for 2000 show assets between $781,000 and almost $1.8 million -- and liabilities between $2.3 million and $10.6 million, mostly for legal bills.
But as the outgoing first couple, they had tremendous earning potential. And within just one year, their financial troubles were effectively gone.
Hillary Clinton's Senate disclosure forms show that in 2001, they reported earning nearly $12 million. Most of that came from Bill Clinton's speechmaking, and the rest came from an advance for Hillary Clinton's book.
And that didn't even include Hillary Clinton's Senate salary, Bill Clinton's pension or money made on investments.
As soon as they left the White House, Hillary Clinton entered the Senate and was earning a $145,000 salary; her husband's pension was also north of $150,000.
All told, their financial snapshot in 2001 was drastically different than when they left the White House -- assets were listed at between $6 million and $30 million; liabilities were between $1.3 million and $5.6 million. And despite their financial issues, they got help from family friend and fundraiser Terry McAuliffe (now, the governor of Virginia) to secure a loan at the time for a $1.7 million home in Chappaqua, N.Y.
These finer details made Clinton's comment about being "dead broke" all the more questionable.
Republicans, noting that the Clintons weren't exactly the typical American family in debt, pounced on that remark this week.
"I think she's been out of touch with average people for a long time," said Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus, pointing to Clinton's estimated $200,000-per-speech speaking fees and million-dollar book advances. "Whether she was flat broke or not is not the issue. It's tone deaf to average people."
On Tuesday, the potential Democratic presidential candidate walked her comment back a notch. She said they "fully appreciate how hard life is for so many Americans." She acknowledged to ABC's "Good Morning America" that "we've continued to be blessed in the last 14 years."

Clinton addressed her personal financial situation in interviews promoting her new memoir, "Hard Choices."

Reminiscent of Flo, from Mel’s Diner MAD imagines Hillary as a broke waitress in a sitcom titled, “One Broke Girl,” lamenting “It’s tough getting by on $200,000 speaking fees.”

The image is an obvious play on Clinton’s comment to Diane Sawyer that she and Bill Clinton were “dead broke” when they left the White House despite her 8 million dollar book advance.

Her claim has since been brutally mocked by all sides, including, surprisingly, MSNBC.

Hillary Clinton’s media blitz for her new memoir did not get off to the best start. Both the left and right are chastising her now infamous “dead broke” comment as her poll numbers hit their lowest levels since 2008. Clinton had another flub during a speaking engagement in Chicago on Wednesday as she attempted to draw a parallel between her 2008 campaign against Barack Obama and Abraham Lincoln’s 1860 primary race.

“We have leaders in office or just out of office who have really solidified all the principles and values of this nation because they know from whence we came. Leaders like Hillary Clinton, who is probably running for president in 2016… know our history like no one else,” Pat joked on radio this morning. “There are a lot of people who didn’t know that Abraham Lincoln was a U.S. senator, but we found out yesterday that he sure was.”

“I write about Rahm [Emanuel] in the book. I asked him not to read it before we sat and did our interview, but it was the very first chapter – a chapter I rightly call ‘Team of Rivals’ because that’s what it was in the beginning,” Clinton said. “A senator from Illinois ran against a senator from New York, just as had happened way back with a senator from Illinois named Lincoln and a senator from New York named Seward. And it turned out the same way.”
Lincoln actually served as a congressman from Illinois in the mid-1800s.
“How do these people seriously… have any credibility? Pelosi’s the same way. Last week she was spewing stuff about the Constitution she knows nothing about. She does that on fairly regular basis,” Pat said. “But they show their ignorance so often. And the left just keeps eating up everything they say.”
While Stu was less willing to pounce on Clinton for the seemingly honest mistake, he could not help but bring up Senator Chuck Schumer’s (D-NY) embarrassing 2011 flub in which he failed to correctly identify the three branches of government.



“So I would urge my Republican colleagues, no matter how strongly they feel, we have three branches of government,” Schumer said. “We have a House. We have a Senate. We have a president. All three of us are going to have to come together and give some.”

“A House, Senate and president,” Pat said disgusted. “Not even ‘executive.’ It’s the House, Senate, president.”
On the bright side, at least he knows there are three branches…

Despite not having a journalism degree or ever having done any sort of serious news reporting, Chelsea Clinton was hired by NBC News for a just-disclosed annual salary of $600,000. You read that right, friends, $600,000 a year for Hill and Bill’s little girl on the NBC payroll.
Can you say, “Buying favor?”
According to the website politico.com, knowledgeable sources revealed the whopping salary paid to the young and inexperienced Ms. Clinton:

Clinton, who joined NBC News as a “special correspondent” in November 2011, was up for renewal or non-renewal this year. Instead, the sources said, the network decided to keep her on the payroll on a month-to-month basis so that the two parties could sever ties if Clinton’s mother, Hillary, runs for president.

When Chelsea was hired by NBC (which, as we all know, has very close and cozy ties to the Washington power elite), critics both inside and outside the network shook their heads in disbelief. Some gossip sites reported that Chelsea was thought to be a spoiled lightweight who did only a few stories for the network over the span of months.
In its salary-disclosing piece, politico.com reveals:

When Clinton joined NBC, many media critics chafed at the network’s decision to employ a former first daughter with no experience in journalism. The New York Post referred to Clinton as “just another spoiled, aimless child of rich, successful parents chauffeured through adulthood by Mommy and Daddy’s connections.”

Clearly, with the kind of dough she was pulling in from NBC — $600k a year, $50k a month, $12,500 a week — Chelsea would not fall into the category of “dead broke” as her mother claimed for herself.

On top of all the other downers dogging the Hillary Clinton Experience this week — check out our earlier post on the myriad problems — comes word that the “Ready for Hillary” campaign-style bus broke down in Philadelphia.

The Ready for Hillary bus was in Philadelphia today to rally support for a book signing event for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton earlier today.
Ready for Hillary is a pro-Clinton super PAC encouraging Clinton to run for president of the United States.

Oh yeah, add one more Hilly-dilly to the list of woes for the week…
Critical reviews of Hillary’s much-anticipated account of her time as Secretary of State, Hard Choices, have been tepid at best.

Today on “Morning Joe,” co-host Mika Brzezinski blasted Hillary Clinton’s comments that she and her husband Bill Clinton were “dead broke” when they left the White House. Brzezsinski said Hillary’s comments were “not just a little tone-deaf,” but that they “show just how contrived the book is.”
Brzezinski also insisted that the rest of the panel, which included Mark Halperin managing editor of Bloomberg Politics, to “stop giving passes, hoping you’re going to get some sort of interview.”
Halperin, to his credit, added, “if it was a Republican getting money from Goldman Sachs, and with corporate ties, and was a Republican frontrunner, they would be eviscerated,” and that the “level of tone deafness” was “a huge caution.”
“If I were a middle class American having trouble paying my mortgage and wondering how my kid is going to handle the student debt I would not be excited about this candidate,” Brzezinski said.

Hillary Clinton’s book tour has not gone as well as she hoped – her interviews filled with gaffe after gaffe – so she brought in a little help from a man who has a bit more experience with laying on the charm: the Bubba himself.
As if there’s no turning back now, the Clintons are only leaning into the “dead broke” statement even more. Speaking with NBC News’ David Gregory before the Clinton Global Initiative, the former president asserted that the family was “several million dollars in debt” following the impeachment scandal.
He says they had no idea they would earn so much money from speaking engagements. Their wealth now, he says, doesn’t mean that they’re out of touch. After all:

We go to our local grocery store on the weekend, we talk to people in our town – we know what’s going on.

But even MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski admits that the Clintons’ upscale Chappaqua, New York, grocery store is not exactly the bellwether grocery store where a former President and Secretary of State can learn about what’s “going on” in America.
Bill laments the disappearance of the “American dream,” all while proving himself to be a clear example of just that. He wears his self-proclaimed one-time poverty as a badge of honor – because for a Democrat, wealth is taboo.
If the Clintons allowed themselves to be authentic, they might stop turning off voters. But don’t expect this couple to do that – they seem to have one goal in mind, and for them, apparently anything is worth the price.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has had a rough time of it ever since she asserted that both she and her husband were “dead broke” and “struggled” after leaving the White House in 2001. “A few weeks before they left the White House, the Clintons were able to muster a cash down payment of $855,000 and secure a $1.995 million mortgage,” Politifact observed. “This hardly fits the common meaning of ‘dead broke.’”
Clinton might have taken the public backlash over this minor gaffe in stride, but she didn’t. Speaking with The Guardian over the weekend, Clinton again reasserted her credentials on the issue of income inequality. “They don’t see me as part of the problem,” she insisted of those concerned with the growing income gap in the United States. “Because we pay ordinary income tax, unlike a lot of people who are truly well off, not to name names; and we’ve done it through dint of hard work.”
This statement, too, roiled even Clinton allies who were forced by pangs of conscience to note that the Clintons have been taking advantage of financial planning strategies that only the wealthiest Americans use to avoid paying their full freight (a tax burden they believe others should pay, by the way).
You could be forgiven for thinking the Clintons are thin-skinned because, speaking to Meet the Press host David Gregory recently, former President Bill Clinton came to his wife’s defense and asserted that it was factually accurate that his family was financially broken in the wake of his impeachment.

“It is factually true that we were several million dollars in debt,” Clinton said. “Everybody no assumes that what happened in the intervening years was automatic. I’m shocked by what’s happened. I’m shocked that people still want me to come give talks.”
“She’s not out of touch,” Clinton added of his wife.
He would not go so far as to say criticism of his wife’s comments has been unfair, but he did say that the focus of the public debate should be on his wife’s favored policies and not her identity.
“I think I had the lowest net worth of any American president in the 20th Century when I took office,” he offered, unsolicited. The former president closed by saying that the “real issue” facing presidential aspirants should be whether you are out of touch because you are rich, not simply your current net worth.
The instinct among Democratic politicians to one-up each other by inaccurately asserting a claim to poverty is an inexplicable one. They are sacrificing authenticity for the sake of appealing to the Democratic primary electorate. However, as demonstrated by a variety of the most successful politicians that party has ever produced, the Democratic electorate is apparently sincerely interested in just who the poorest in their ranks is.
