Following Connecticut’s Lead: Another State Threatens Gun Confiscation

Following Connecticut’s Lead: Another State Threatens Gun Confiscation

In the horrifying wake of Connecticut’s gun confiscation, other states are beginning to follow the state’s lead by purposing and passing legislation that bans specific types of firearms. The bans, however, often continue to hone in on the 2nd Amendment rights of their citizens by leading up to an almost inevitable, state-wide gun confiscation.
According to The Washington Times, in a public hearing on Monday, the New Jersey Assembly’s Law and Public Safety Committee was scheduled to rule on a bill that reduces the maximum magazine capacity from 15 to 10, often seen as a first step to complete gun control.
“If it becomes law, it would have zero impact on crime because criminals don’t follow bans,” executive director of the Association of New Jersey Rifle and Pistol Clubs Scott Bach explains. “It would only affect legal gun owners by essentially tying their hands when they need to defend their lives.”
“This bill is a gun ban, there’s no question about that,” Bach warns.
Since the legislation covers both detachable and fixed magazines, it has the effect of to banning popular, low-caliber rifles.
They discovered that the bill would affect tube-fed, semi-automatic rifles because the magazine cannot be separated from the gun. Thus, the experts found that at least 43 common rifles would suddenly be considered a prohibited “assault firearm,” such as the .22 caliber Marlin Model 60, Remington Nylon 66 and Winchester 190.
The penalty for possessing one of these firearms would result in up to 10 years in jail and a mandatory minimum sentence of three to five years, with no chance of parole.
The belief is that this bill was purposed at this time with the hopes that Gov. Chris Christie will collapse under pressure, signing the bill into legislation. It’s speculated that the bill will easily pass the Assembly and Senate in the next few months, leaving Christie’s veto power the only hope of stopping the gun control tactics from moving forward.
