French President Macron calls for ‘real European army’ to defend against Russia and the US

In an interview with French radio station Europe 1, French President Emmanuel Macron spoke of school violence, European elections and the EU’s military
In the rather candid interview, Emmanuel made the statement that the EU should create a “real European army”. He also called the bloc the main victim of Washington’s decision to scrap a 30-year-old nuclear arms treaty with Russia.
“We will not be able to protect Europeans if we don’t decide to have a real European army,” Macron told Europe 1, insisting that Europe should be defending itself in a “more sovereign way,” without depending “only on the United States.”
He called for “protection from China, Russia, and even from the United States of America,” implying that President Trump’s recent decision to pull the US from the INF Treaty would endanger European security.
“Who is going to be the main victim? Europe and its security,” Emmanuel said. President Macron also called for a “stronger, protective Europe,” stating that the continent is “increasingly fractured” with nationalism on the rise these days.

Yes, they should defend themselves at their own expense. Look how well that worked for them in the past. Without Russia and the United States they would have lost WWII. Funny that now, we're the two countries they want to defend against. CRAZY!!!

Guy Verhofstadt agrees with Macron - We must create "a European army"

Senior MEP Guy Verhofstadt in a recent Twitter post echoed Macron’s call for a European Army, suggesting even that existing defence forces across Europe should be integrated into a singular EU army.
Mr Macron recently suggested that an EU army would be necessary to counter Russia and China, even saying that the United States under its current leadership could not be trusted.
“We will not be able to protect Europeans if we don’t decide to have a real European army,” Macron earlier told Europe 1, insisting that Europe should be defending itself in a “more sovereign way,” without depending “only on the United States.”
Funds have been allocated for such an army or “European Defence Union”, with Juncker demanding that the forces be operational by 2025.
With many Brexiteers prior to Brexit complaining that the EU was becoming too centralised and would eventually form an army, this certainly will vindicate their position.

Macron's Praise for Nazi Collaborator Marshal Pétain Shocks French Jews

French Jews have reacted in horror at reports President Emmanuel Macron will honor Marshal Philippe Pétain, the disgraced Nazi collaborator who authorised the deportation of tens of thousands of Jews to death camps.

Marshal Petain’s name appears alongside seven other military chiefs to be honored Saturday in a ceremony at the Invalides monument, site of Napoleon’s tomb, to mark the centenary of the end of World War 1.
Petain led the French army to victory in Verdun in 1916, but gained lasting infamy and a conviction for treason for his leadership of Nazi-sanctioned Vichy France during World War II.

In 1940, with France under attack from Germany, Pétain was appointed vice-premier. He later asked for an armistice, upon which he was appointed “chief of state”, enjoying almost absolute powers.
The armistice gave the Germans control over the north and west of France, including Paris, but left the remainder as a separate regime under Pétain.
Officially neutral, in practice the regime collaborated closely with Germany, and brought in its own anti-Semitic legislation.
Touring battlefields ahead of a formal commemoration of the Nov. 11, 1918, armistice that ended the war, Macron said Petain was still worthy of the honor for his leading role in the World War I victory despite his later record.
“Marshal Petain was also a great soldier during World War I” even though he made “fatal choices during the Second World War,” Macron said in the northern town of Charleville-Mezieres.
“I consider it entirely legitimate that we pay homage to the marshals who led our army to victory,” Mr Macron continued.
France’s leading Jewish organisation, Crif, responded immediately, telling the Associated Press it was “shocked” at the decision.
Crif leader Francis Kalifat said, “the only thing we remember about Philippe Petain is that he was, in the name of the French people, held in national disgrace during his trial in July 1945.
“I am shocked that we can honour a man who, it must be remembered, was himself responsible for the deportation of Jews from France, including the Vel’ d’Hiv raid .”
France’s participation and responsibility in the Holocaust has long been a sensitive issue in France and was only officially recognised in 1995 by then president Jacques Chirac.
In 1995 he admitted that Petain’s Vichy puppet government was the French state. Chirac spoke at the Vel’ d’Hiv cycling stadium in Paris, known for a 1942 roundup of French Jews that saw 13,000 people deported to Nazi concentration camps, a third of them children.
Fewer than 100 were to survive the war.

Macron could lose all support he has

By Paul Dijks 9 November 2018

French President Emmanuel Macron, amidst his already rock bottom approval ratings, is going for broke, trying to lose every last ounce of support he has.
He paid homage to WWI hero turned Nazi collaborator, Marshal Philippe Pétain. “I consider it entirely legitimate that we pay homage to the marshals who led our army to victory. Marshal Philippe Pétain was a great soldier in World War One,” Macron said.
“As such”, Macron added, “the man who led French troops to victory at the Battle of Verdun is worthy of being honoured alongside other military chiefs on the war’s centenary.”
Of course that wartime general would go on to lead France’s infamous Nazi-allied Vichy Regime.
In an interview with FRANCE 24, Francis Kalifat, Head of French Jewish Council (CRIF) exclaims: “I am shocked by this statement,” pointing out that Pétain authorised the deportation of 76,000 French Jews to Nazi death camps.
“It’s hard to imagine what would happen if [German] Chancellor Angela Merkel said she wanted to honour Marshal [Hermann] Goering, who was also a war hero on the German side,” added Haim Messika of the World Jewish Congress.
And political commentator Thomas Guenole explained this reasoning is flawed as Adolf Hitler was also given similar honours after his military service in World War I.
When Macron announced his intentions on twitter, he was met with a furious backlash.
‘Pétain is a traitor!’, wrote many on twitter. As Pétain was found guilty of treason for his actions as leader of Vichy France, he is the typification of a disgraced hero. Jewish groups, political opponents and French citizens vented outrage against Macron.
Pétain was sentenced to death for treason, though De Gaulle commuted this to life in prison taking into account Pétain’s previous heroism and his old age.
