Two intruders attempted to break into the home, according to police. The second intruder fled the scene.

Police said a grandmother was at the home with her grandson at the time. According to police, the grandson shot and killed the intruder.

The grandfather, George Wyant, told Channel 9 his 14-year-old grandson shot the intruder.

"It’s not something you can be proud of. But, I’m happy the way it turned out. Because my wife is getting over an illness," Wyant told reporter Catherine Bilkey. "What would have happened if he wasn’t there? That’s all I can tell you. What would have happened."

Wyant said he heard about the break-in and shooting from a neighbor. Many neighbors are shocked.

"I hope they do catch the person that ran away,” neighbor Steve Repak said.

The call came in at 5:14 p.m. Medic pronounced the intruder dead at the scene.

    MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. —
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said the second man involved in a home break-in that turned deadly near the Charlotte/Mint Hill border has been arrested. Another suspected intruder was killed when a 14-year-old inside the house shot and killed him Tuesday night.

The two intruders, who police identified as 18-year-old Isai Delcid and his 22-year-old brother Carlos Delcid, attempted to break into the home on Rolling Fields Lane just after 5 p.m., according to investigators. Isai was shot and died at the scene while police said Carlos fled.

Officers arrested Carlos late Tuesday night and charged him with first-degree burglary.

Police said a grandmother was at the home with her grandson at the time. According to officers, the grandson shot and killed Isai.

The grandfather, George Wyant, told Channel 9 his 14-year-old grandson shot the intruder.

"It’s not something you can be proud of. But, I’m happy the way it turned out. Because my wife is getting over an illness," Wyant said.

Wyant said he heard about the break-in and shooting from a neighbor, and many neighbors are shocked.

Wyant told Channel 9 that the suspects parked their car in the driveway, walked up the steps to his back porch and tried to get into his house through a back window. That's when he said his grandson came to the window and told them to stop.

"He was coming through the window and my grandson said, ‘Stop, I have a gun,’" Wyant said.

Wyant said the suspect, Isai Delcid, wouldn't listen. He said that's when Isai broke through the window and his grandson started firing.

Wyant said he left the gun in the home for protection. He said his grandson fired three shots from his Glock 380. At least one bullet hit and killed the 18-year-old.

A bullet hole could be seen in the wood railing of the porch, highlighted by a police evidence marker.

Officers said the intruder’s brother, Carlos, ran from the scene but police quickly tracked him down because of his electronic monitor.

Investigators said Carlos was already on probation for breaking into the same house twice in the past four months -- once in September and again in October.

Wyant said he believes Carlos targeted his house after seeing his wife's prescription pills while performing duct work in the attic.

"I got a look at the duct in the bathroom and she came in too. They had taken all of her medicine," he said.

Wyant said he has taken his grandson to the shooting range to teach him how to use a gun, but he’s still surprised by his quick actions Tuesday night.

Wyant said his grandson was protecting his grandmother, who can barely get around, and he said he's grateful his grandson knew where the gun was and that he and his wife are OK.

"What would have happened if he didn't have it, if I didn't go out and get it?” Wyant asked.

Channel 9 learned that the 14-year-old's father was murdered inside his east Charlotte automotive shop in 2008. Eyewitness News covered the deadly shooting of Gregorio Hernandez at Greg's Automotive on Albemarle Road.

Alfonzo Caballero pleaded guilty to the murder. He's received 25 years in prison for the crime after testifying against a co-defendant.

Coming up on Eyewitness News at 5 p.m. Channel 9 is learning more about the suspects involved in Tuesday night’s break-in and is digging into their criminal past and drug problem police said one of them had.

Dec. 17, 2014 - George Wyant at his home on Rolling Fields Road, where his 14-year old grandson shot and killed an intruder Tuesday afternoon. The home is in an unincorporated area of the county just outside of Mint Hill.

A 20-year-old man was arrested in connection with an attempted home invasion and robbery that claimed the life of the suspect’s younger brother Tuesday afternoon in eastern Mecklenburg County, police said.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said the suspect’s brother was shot and killed by a 14-year-old boy, and the teen’s grandfather said the youth was trying to defend his grandmother.

The 14-year-old’s father was shot to death six years ago during an apparent robbery at the auto repair shop he operated in east Charlotte, the grandfather said.

Investigators said Isai Robert Delcid, 18, was fatally shot while he and his brother Carlos Delcid were trying to break into the rear of a home on Rolling Fields Road. That is in a neighborhood off N.C. 218, in a community that is surrounded by Mint Hill but is unincorporated and served by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

Mecklenburg County jail records show no arrests for Isai Delcid, but Carlos Delcid was arrested in October on breaking-and-entering and larceny charges. He is scheduled for trial on those changes Jan. 22.

Investigators said the incident took place shortly before 5:15 p.m. They said the 14-year-old and his grandmother were in the home when two men tried breaking in.

George Wyant, the teen’s grandfather, said Wednesday that the intruders were on the deck in the back of the house and trying to get through a rear window. He said his grandson warned the men to leave

“He told them, ‘Stop, I’ve got a gun,’ ” Wyant said. But the men continued trying to get into the house, Wyant said. So the 14-year-old fired.

A shattered glass window and a section of the deck that had been hit by a gunshot were visible Wednesday, hours after police had left the scene.

“I left the gun here for protection,” Wyant said, adding that he had taken the 14-year-old to a shooting range to teach him how to use the gun.

Police said the killing appeared to be justified.

“These people were trying to break into the house, and (the home’s occupants) were trying to defend themselves,” said Lt. Eric Brady, the response area commander.

Wyant said Wednesday that someone had tried breaking into the house twice in recent months.

The family had been visited by violence before.

On April 11, 2008, Wyant’s son-in-law, Gregorio “Greg” Hernandez, was working on a car at Greg’s Automotive, the shop he operated on Albemarle Road. Neighbors reported hearing shots and the sound of squealing tires leaving the scene. Police arrived to find Hernandez, 35, shot to death.

Police investigators surmised that robbery might have been a motive, but no arrests were announced.

“He was a mechanic,” Wyant said. “It was his garage. Someone came in and shot him to death.”

Wyant was asked Wednesday if he considered his grandson a hero.

“In a way, yes – and in a way, no,” he answered. “He protected his grandmother. Who knows what the results could’ve been.”

Police encourage anyone with information about the break-in or the shooting to call 704-432-TIPS (8477) to speak with a homicide detective. Tipsters can also call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
