Lafayette, Louisiana, police respond to movie theater shooting

    By Ralph Ellis, CNN
Updated 9:56 PM ET, Thu July 23, 2015

(CNN)Police in Lafayette, Louisiana, say they responded Thursday night to a report of a shooting at the Grand 16 Theatre.

"We think the shooter is deceased," Police Chief Jim Craft said, according to CNN affiliate KATC. "Right now we're in the middle of sorting this out."

The shooting involved "multiple victims," the police department tweeted. Police said they received the call about 7:30 p.m. CT.

Todd Moffatt, manager of a Mellow Mushroom pizza restaurant in the area, said 20 to 30 emergency vehicles had arrived on the scene.

The area was locked down, he said.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal tweeted, "I'm on my way to Lafayette right now. Please say a prayer for the victims at Grand Theatre and their families."

At least 3 dead after gunman opens fire at Lafayette, La. movie theater

    Published July 24, 2015 FoxNews.com

NOW PLAYINGSeveral injured in Louisiana movie theatre shooting

DEVELOPING: A gunman killed two people and injured seven others late Thursday when he opened fire in a Lafayette, La. movie theater before turning the gun on himself, the city's police chief said.

Police Chief Jim Craft told a news conference that authorities had identified the gunman as a 58-year-old white man, but did not release his name, citing an ongoing background check. The chief added that the conditions of the injured victims ranged from critical to non-life-threatening.

The gunman opened fire at the Grand 16 Theatre in Lafayette, approximately 40 miles east of Baton Rouge. Craft said the shooter used a handgun. Authorities said approximately 100 people were inside the theater at the time.

The shooting happened about 20 minutes into a 7 p.m. showing of the movie "Trainwreck," according to The Daily Advertiser, which quoted theatergoer Katie Domingue.

"We heard a loud pop we thought was a firecracker," Domingue told the newspaper. Domingue said she saw "an older white man" standing up and shooting down into the theater, but not in her direction.

"He wasn't saying anything. I didn't hear anybody screaming either," Domingue said.

Domingue told the newspaper she heard about six shots before she and her fiance ran to the nearest exist, leaving behind her shoes and purse.

Jalen Fernell told The Daily Advertiser he was watching the film "Southpaw" with friends in an adjacent theater when he heard the first shots. Initially, he thought they were part of the movie.

"About five seconds later, sirens went off and I realized it wasn't the movie," said Fernell, who added that moviegoers were told to leave the area over a loudspeaker. Outside the theater, the 20-year-old said "I saw a woman lying on the ground outside with blood everywhere.

She was shot in the leg."

"We didn't know what to do. You're scared to walk through the parking lot. You don't know if the guy's in a car, hiding in the parking lot," Fernell said. He watched as police with assault rifles entered the building and described hearing a barrage of gunshots "like a war going on."

Fernell said he heard from a police car radio that six people were down in Theater 14. After more gunshots, he heard that the suspect was down and had committed suicide.

Police said they had closed other theaters in the area as a precaution. State and federal personnel were on hand to assist in the investigation.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal arrived at the scene approximately two hours after the shooting. At a news conference, Jindal praised the response of local law enforcement and asked for prayers on behalf of the victims.

"The best thing anybody can do right now is to think about them, pray for them, shower them with your love is the most important thing we will get through this," Jindal said. "We will get through this.

We are a resilient community. This is an awful night for Lafayette.

This is an awful night for Louisiana. This is an awful night for the United States."

The Daily Advertiser reported that the White House was looking for a phone number to contact City-Parish President Joey Durel for President Barack Obama to express his condolences.

Comedian Amy Schumer, the star of "Trainwreck," tweeted her condolences late Thursday.

The Louisiana shooting occurred almost exactly three years after James Holmes entered a crowded movie theater in suburban Denver and opened fire during the premier of "The Dark Knight Rises", killing 12 people and injuring 70 others.

[Breaking news update 12:28 a.m. ET]

The shooter has a criminal history but it dates back several years, Craft said. He didn't elaborate further.

[Breaking news update 12:25 a.m. ET]

Authorities located the car of the alleged shooter and spotted "stuff in there that looked suspicious," Col. Michael Edmonson of the Louisiana State Police. The bomb squad will blow out the the window and the trunk of the vehicle "to make sure nothing's in there that will cause anybody that will case anyone any harm." For now, the crime scene processing work has been suspended. After the car is cleared, authorities will then go into the theater where the bodies lie.
"There's nothing to believe that there was any kind of motive," said Col. Michael Edmonson of the Louisiana State Police.

The shooter was a 58-year-old white man who was a theater patron, police said. Authorities have his name but are withholding it as the investigation continues.

Louisiana Theater Shooting: Gunman John Houser Was 'Drifter' Intent on Escaping, Cops Say

by ERIK ORTIZ and TRACY CONNOR

Police superintendent: Lafayette shooter 'estranged' from family
    3:03

John Russell Houser, the 59-year-old gunman who opened fire Thursday night in a Louisiana multiplex, was a "drifter" who had every intention of escaping the carnage before taking his own life, police said Friday.

Law enforcement personnel were searching a room of a nearby Motel 6 in Lafayette, where they say Houser had kept "disguises" such as wigs and glasses as well as license plates for his car.

"This event was planned and maybe he was trying to change his appearance," Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft told NBC News.

Authorities believe the gunman had been living in the Lafayette area since earlier this month. He was originally from Phenix City, Alabama, about 500 miles northeast of Lafayette, they said.

Houser had parked his 1995 blue Lincoln Continental with switched license plates near the exit of the Grand Theater 16, officials said — indicating that he planned to flee after using a .40 caliber handgun to kill two people and injure nine others during the 7:10 p.m. screening of the comedy "Trainwreck."

Police said that Houser fired off 13 rounds, only stopping to reload.

During that moment, they said, a patron was able to pull the fire alarm, potentially saving more lives.

Houser tried to exit the theater as about 100 people scrambled for safety, investigators said. But he remained inside as police closed in, and then killed himself at the scene.

"The gunman's original plan was to leave the theater alive," Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal told reporters.

Police said he had an uncle who lived in the Lafayette area, but died about 35 years ago. He was also previously married, but became estranged from his family.

"He just seemed like he was drifting along," Craft said. "We're not sure why he chose to stay in Lafayette."

Police said Houser did have a criminal record, but it was about 10 to 15 years old and included an arson arrest and selling alcohol to a minor.

Col. Michael Edmonson of the Louisiana State Police said they believe Houser was working alone, and are asking the public for any tips about who he was. His motivation for the rampage remains unclear.

A LinkedIn page with Houser's name and photo
said he was an entrepreneur who owned a Columbus, Georgia, pub from 1979 to 1980, and then another establishment north of Columbus from 1998 to 2000.

The page said he was interested in real estate and finance: "It would be my pleasure to assist you in financial matters or things more important."

The page said he was a regular guest on a TV talk show in Columbus: "Invited political controversy on every one of them, and loved every minute of it."

Calvin Floyd, who hosted the "Rise & Shine" television show on NBC affiliate WLTZ, said Houser's behavior was known to be erratic.

"He was on from time to time because he was a very radical person with radical views," Floyd told NBC News. "He was a Republican and then I would have someone with a real strong Democrat view on."

"His father was tax commissioner in the county," he added. "That's how I knew him, but I had him on my show because he was a very radical person."

A couple of years ago, Floyd recalled, he was on vacation in Texas when Houser called asking for help with an issue. When Floyd said he was unavailable, Houser became angry. Floyd recalled that when he last saw Houser a year ago, Houser walked past him in the street and would not say hello.

"He seemed very angry at me," Floyd said.

"The association I had with him was for entertainment," he added.

"He was very entertaining. He made for good TV and when it was over, you would leave shaking your head."

Floyd said Houser was recently selling car parts at a local flea market. Asked if he was surprised when he heard Houser was the shooter, according to police, Floyd said "no."

"He was a radical guy," he added.

Man described as a drifter kills 2, himself in Lafayette, Louisiana, movie theater

By Greg Botelho and Saeed Ahmed, CNN

(CNN)As moviegoers settled in for the comedy "Trainwreck," John Russell Houser stood up and unloaded at least 13 shots. Then, as people rushed from the theater, the 59-year-old man joined them and headed outside, apparently toward his blue 1995 Lincoln Continental.

Then Houser noticed the sirens from police converging on the Lafayette, Louisiana, theater. So he went back inside and took his own life with a .40-caliber handgun.
By that point Thursday night, 21-year-old Mayci Breaux was dead. Ten others were wounded, including 33-year-old Jillian Johnson, who would die at a nearby hospital.
And a city, state and country were searching for answers.
"Why did he come here? Why did he do (this)?" Col. Michael Edmonson of the Louisiana State Police said Friday morning. "We don't know that."
Some clues are starting to emerge. They include posts on political bulletin boards from a man who identified himself as Houser, with a matching age and longtime hometown of Phenix City, Alabama.

He has a profile created by the website Tea Party Nation. And on PoliticalForum.com, he left hundreds of messages espousing anti-government, anti-media views.
Houser was denied a concealed carry permit in 2006 after an arrest involving arson, and he was treated for mental health issues in 2008 and 2009, Russell County, Alabama, Sheriff Heath Taylor told CNN. And Taylor said his office served him an eviction notice in March 2014.
"He damaged some of the property there, and I know he had done something to the gas line and the fireplace," the sheriff said.
Police: 'He could have come out and done additional harm'

Houser was a drifter who'd become estranged from his family back home in Louisiana and arrived in Lafayette, a city of about 120,000 people about 60 miles west of Baton Rouge, in early July. He was staying at a Motel 6, about 4 miles north of his eventual target, the Grand 16 theater.
Why he'd gone there is a mystery. Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft said Houser once had an uncle who lived in the city, but he'd died about 35 years ago. Authorities gave no indication that he knew anyone else there.

    EXPAND IMAGE

But they have some clues suggesting this wasn't a spontaneous act. Authorities searching Houser's hotel room and vehicle found wigs, glasses and other apparent disguises. And he'd swapped out the license plates on his Lincoln Continental, parking it right outside an exit door to the Grand 16.
Yet, while he paused his barrage of bullets to head toward the exits, he never made it to the car.
Two police officers who happened to be at the theater made their way toward where "Trainwreck" was playing, as patrons rushed away from the carnage and their law enforcement colleagues on the outside rushed to get there.
"They heard a shot," Craft said. "And upon entering the theater, the suspect was found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound."
Edmonson said that the gunman got outside, saw police coming, and then returned to kill himself.
"He could have come out and done additional harm," the state police colonel said. "... It was an ordinary moment, an ordinary night, and it turned into an extraordinary situation."
    Pops, muzzle flashes and panic

The shooting victims are in area hospitals, except for two who have been released. One of the ones still hospitalized was in critical condition Friday morning, Craft said. Lafayette City-Parish President Joey Durel said that Breaux's boyfriend, Matthew Rodriguez, is among the wounded.
As they recover, others are thankful they're not hurt physically even as they try to make sense of why someone would open fire in a movie theater packed with about 100 people, none of whom he apparently knew.
Randall Mann, an executive at Acadian Ambulance, which responded within 6 minutes, said his 21-year-old daughter -- who was watching "Trainwreck" from the second-to-last row, the same one as Houser -- is "very traumatized" but unharmed.
"She made a comment that she was just thankful that the shooter did not pick one of the theaters that had some children's movies in it because she would have hated for the children to have witnessed that," he told CNN. "I took that as a great first step of her eventually coping with this."
Horror in a movie theater, instead of on a screen
He said that when his daughter heard the first pops, she thought they could have been firecrackers or part of the movie. But she "knew something was happening" when she saw muzzle flashes, Mann said. She hit the floor then ran for her life, joining a swarm of panicked but controlled, helpful crowd.
Another man in the theater told Keifer Sanders, who was watching another movie, that "there was no argument, nothing going on at all. And a guy just stood up and started opening fire."
"The guy was just kind of at ease, just standing there, just shooting," Sanders said.
Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal recounted the story of two teachers, enjoying the last few days of summer break, caught up in the melee. One jumped over the other, a move that the friend said prevented a bullet from hitting her in the head, according to the governor. It struck her in the leg instead.
This all unfolded around 7:30 p.m. (8:30 p.m. ET), about 20 minutes into a film that Houser had bought a ticket for just like everyone else. Afterward, the movie's star Amy Schumer tweeted, "My heart is broken and all my thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Louisiana."
"Obviously the audience was laughing, maybe that made him angry," Mann speculated. "I don't know. But why did he pick that movie? It's just very strange."
Days after guilty verdict in Aurora shooting case

The bloodshed comes three years after a heavily armed James Holmes burst into an Aurora, Colorado, showing of the Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises" and opened fire, killing 12 people and injuring over 70 more.
His story has been very much in the headlines recently, given a Colorado jury's decision to convict him on murder charges. The next step for the jurors is to decide whether he is sentenced to death.
Security measures were stepped up at some cinemas after the Aurora shooting. Still, theaters across the United States fundamentally remain freewheeling places, where ticket holders can wander in and out, unbothered by the intense security measures that now typify airports and public buildings. Ticket sales also didn't slump.
Did that eerily similar episode factor, in any way, to what happened about 1,200 miles away in Lafayette? Authorities haven't said.
So far, they don't have much to go on. Houser had a criminal history, but it dates back to a possible arson and case of giving alcohol to a minor that's at least 10 years old. There are indications that alcohol may have been consumed, but there are no indications of drug use, said Craft, the Lafayette police chief.
    Friends mourn shooting victims

As investigators try to figure that out, Edmonson, the Louisiana State Police colonel, urged people to keep in mind the "two beautiful lives" Houser took.
A Franklin, Louisiana, native, Breaux studied at Louisiana State University-Eunice and worked at the Coco Eros boutique in Lafayette, which posted to Facebook that she was well-known, well-loved and an "amazing young woman."
Johnson, who died at a hospital after the shooting, co-owned Red Arrow, a shop in her hometown of Lafayette known for its gifts, toys and clothes. She played ukulele and guitar in a band called The Figs.
"She was a creative being," said friend Kimberly Wooten, noting that Johnson leaves behind her husband. "She made life better, from what she said ... to what she made."
The fact that she, like Breaux, are now gone is tough to grasp, especially given how they died.

"Everyone is still processing it," said Caitlin Sonnier, another friend of Johnson. "The confusion, the questions, the whys. ... It's something you don't fathom waking up to in the morning."

Louisiana theater shooting suspect had degree from Montgomery law school

Posted: Jul 24, 2015 5:28 AM PDT Updated: Jul 24, 2015 8:54 AM PDT By Kaitlin Chappell CONNECT

ALABAMA (WAFF) -Lafayette, LA police identified the suspect in Thursday night's movie theater shooting, saying the man is from Phenix City in southeast Alabama

The suspect is 59-year-old John Russell Houser, who was described by police as "kind of a drifter." Three people, including the gunman were killed in the shooting. Police confirmed the identities of the victims killed as 21-year-old Macy Breaux and 33-year-old Jillian Johnson.

Breaux was found dead at the scene and Johnson died at the hospital. Nine others were taken to the hospital. Of those nine, two were released and one is in critical condition. The wounded ranged in age from their late teens to their late 60s.

The shooting happened at around 7:30 p.m. at the Grand 16 Theater about 20 minutes into the showing of the movieTrainwreck.

Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft said Houser had a criminal background. Houser had a previous arson arrest and a misdemeanor for selling alcohol to a minor. They also said he seemed to be estranged from his family.

Craft said Houser parked his blue 1995 Lincoln Continental outside the theater before the shooting. and used a .40-caliber handgun

"It is apparent that he was intent on shooting and then escaping," Craft said. "What happened is the quick law enforcement actions forced him back into the theater, at which time he shot himself."

Faulkner University said in a release Friday that Houser was a 1998 graduate of the Jones School of Law, prior to the law school receiving ABA accreditation.

The wife and other family members of the Louisiana theater gunman asked for a temporary protective order in 2008 against the man.

Court documents seeking the order said John Houser, "exhibited extreme erratic behavior and has made ominous as well as disturbing statements."

The documents said even though he lived in Phenix City, he had come to Carroll County, GA, where they lived and "perpetrated various acts of family violence."

Houser "has a history of mental health issues, i.e., manic depression and/or bi-polar disorder" the filing said.

The filing says Houser's wife, Kellie Maddox Houser, "has become so worried about the defendant's volatile mental state that she has removed all guns and/or weapons from their marital residence."

The protection order was at least temporarily granted.

She filed for divorce in March.

"We heard a loud pop we thought was a firecracker," Katie Domingue told The Daily Advertiser.
"He wasn't saying anything. I didn't hear anybody screaming either," said Domingue, who added that she heard about six shots before she and her fiance ran to the nearest exit, leaving behind her shoes and purse.
Lafayette Police Department said Houser had been staying in a room at the Motel 6 on North University Avenue in Lafayette since the beginning of July with no ties to the Lafayette are. Craft said they found wigs, glasses, and other disguises in Houser's hotel room.
The Associated Press reports Houser had been in the Lafayette area since July.
Police said about 100 people were in the theater at the time of the shooting.
WAFB reported a GoFundMe account was set up for two teachers injured in the shooting. They have been dubbed "heroic teachers."
    Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal said:
"A couple of teachers were in the theater, both of them were shot," said Jindal. "One of them was released tonight. Her friend literally jumped over her and, in her account, actually saved her life. If she hadn't done that, the fellow teacher got shot, she believed that bullet would have hit her in the head. Now both teachers ended up shot. The second one, the one whose life was saved, even though she was shot in the leg she had the presence of mind to pull the fire alarm to help save other lives."
Trainwreck star Amy Schumer tweeted: "My heart is broken and all my thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Louisiana." The comedy stars Schumer as a magazine writer who decides to live a life of promiscuity after her father convinces her that monogamy isn't realistic, but in spite of her best efforts, finds herself falling in love with one of her interview subjects.
Monday marked the anniversary of the Aurora, CO theater shooting. The same day as the Louisiana shooting, a jury decided unanimously that the Colorado attack was cruel enough to justify the death penalty for shooter James Holmes.
ALEA issued a statement on the shooting:
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is assisting Louisiana and Federal authorities as they investigate the shooting incident that occurred Thursday, July 23, in Lafayette, La. Since ALEA is not the lead agency and is only assisting in this ongoing investigation, the agency will not comment on specific details, but Secretary of Law Enforcement Spencer Collier said, "ALEA is committed to providing law enforcement and investigative support to our Federal partners and Louisiana counterparts. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and the community affected by this senseless act."
