Iran to send seven satellites into space

Iran to send seven satellites into space

TEHRAN – Iran is planning to launch seven satellites into space during the current Iranian calendar year which started on March 21, Iran Space Agency Director Hamid Fazeli announced here on Saturday.

A number of universities will cooperate in the project to manufacture the satellites, he said.

Fazeli said that the Nahid is one of the satellites that is scheduled to be launched this year, adding that a unique technology will be used to launch the satellite.

The Nahid is designed by experts at the research center of the space agency with the cooperation of scientists at Amirkabir University of Technology. It weighs 50 kilograms.

Fazeli added that the Fajr (Dawn), a reconnaissance satellite powered by solar energy, will be sent into orbit this year.

And the Zafar (Triumph) satellite, which will be manufactured by the University of Science and Technology, will be sent into orbit by this summer, he added.

The Zafar, the second version of the Navid (Promise) satellite, is equipped with color cameras and can survey the oil reserves, mines, jungles, and natural disasters.

The communication Mesbah satellite, weighing 69 kilograms, will also be launched into orbit by the end of the year.

Fazeli also said that the space agency is working to manufacture carrier rockets that can carry heavier satellites into space.

Iran launched its first satellite, called the Omid (Hope), in February 2009. The Rasad (Observation) satellite was also sent into orbit in June 2011.

In February 2012, Iran successfully put its third domestically manufactured satellite, named the Navid (Promise), into orbit. On February 8, 2012, Iran received the first image sent by the Navid satellite.
