"I wouldn’t be so sure. President Obama has no choice but to move fast, in part because the image he presented during the campaign — a post-partisan, post-racial, post-anything-unpleasant-and-controversial, pragmatic centrist — was a total crock. He has a vast transformative domestic agenda and — because most of its elements are not terribly popular — he has to accomplish it at speed, or he won’t get it done at all."

Obama is a basketball player. It is virtually instinctual that, to win in that game, you set the pace of the play, keeping the other team off guard. '"Nuff said.

Lies, Damn Lies, and Health Care By: Tait Trussell

In 1988, Congress passed a bill to protect the elderly against the cost of catastrophic illness. But the cost to seniors—who would have been charged a big surtax to pay for it—was comparable to a slap in the face. The elderly were boiling over. Rep. Dan Rostenkowski, D-IL, then chairman of the Ways and Means Committee who was most responsible for the bill, was vilified. At one point, a large group of seniors chased the lawmaker’s car down the street shouting and waving their canes at him. The bill was repealed some months later. (Rostenkowski later went to jail for mail fraud.) Now, with broad health care changes being drafted on the Hill, a repeat of the uprising in 1988 is not impossible.

I posted this quote because everyone seems to believe if this bill is passed in any form we are stuck with it forever; that we will never be rid of it and, like social security and MEDICARE it will grow like a cancer until it does the country in. That may be. But the Gray Revolution of '88 gives me hope that if enough of us are angry about this bill that we can cow the moral cowards in Congress to change or rescind or pluck out that which offends us.
