Magpul Industries Was Not Bluffing, Remington and Colt May Follow Suit
Magpul Industries Was Not Bluffing, Remington and Colt May Follow Suit
By Matt Liponoga | March 22, 2013 - 11:08 pm | News
No sooner had Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper signed three gun-control bills into law Wednesday than the economic backlash began.
Officials at gun equipment manufacturer Magpul Industries confirmed that the company would make good on its vow to leave Colorado if the governor signed the bill to limit ammunition-magazine capacity. The Erie-based manufacturer confirmed on its Facebook page that it will start its transition “almost immediately.”
Magpul may be the first firearms-related business to relocate as a result of state gun-control laws, but it probably won’t be the last. Companies in Connecticut, Maryland and New York are considering moves to more gun-friendly pastures as their state legislatures act on restrictive firearms measures similar to those pushed through by state Democrats here.
In New York, where Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed laws banning so-called assault weapons and limiting magazine capacity to seven rounds, venerable gun manufacturer Remington Arms is being wooed by officials in at least a half-dozen other states.
“We are carefully evaluating our options,” Teddy Novin, marketing director for Remington parent company Freedom Group, Inc., told the Utica Observer-Dispatch in January.
Remington, which has operated for nearly 200 years in Ilion, N.Y., employs 1,300 people and brings an estimated $50 million to the state annually.
Another gun company that may be receptive to relocation is Colt’s Manufacturing Co. in Hartford, Conn. The state legislature in Hartford is debating firearms restrictions in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in December, which left 26 people dead, including 20 children.
Colt President Dennis Veilleux said in a March 18 editorial in the Hartford Courant that he feared the legislation would erode the 175-year-old company’s customer base and cripple its ability to do business in Connecticut. Last week, Colt drove home the point by sending 10 buses with more than 500 employees to the state legislature. The workers held a rally outside the state capitol, waving signs and chanting “Save our jobs!”
And in Maryland, officials at Beretta USA, the American base for the famed Italian gunmaker, have expressed concerns that bills moving quickly through the state legislature would make some of the company’s products illegal in its home state. Beretta employs as many as 400 workers, making the company an attractive target for nearby states, including Virginia and West Virginia.
Magpul, which manufactures polymer firearms accessories, including ammunition magazines, employs about 200 people and supports 400 supply-chain jobs in Colorado. The company blamed political currents outside Colorado for the Democratic legislature’s gun-control package.
“It is disappointing to us that money and a social agenda from outside the state have apparently penetrated the American West to control our legislature and governor, but we feel confident that Colorado residents can still take the state back through recalls, ballot initiatives and the 2014 election,” said the company.
Mr. Hickenlooper, a Democrat, acknowledged at the signing ceremony that Magpul might leave Colorado, but said he had concluded that the legislation’s benefits “clearly” outweighed the costs.
“Those are 200 people who go to work every day, and if Magpul decides they do indeed have to leave, that’s a hardship, that’s difficult,” said Mr. Hickenlooper. “In any difficult piece of legislation, there’s pluses and minuses.”

ERIE -- Magpul Industries, the Erie-based ammunition magazine maker that pledged to leave Colorado after gun-control legislation was signed into law in March, is for the first time manufacturing its weapons accessories out of the state.

The company revealed the news in a Facebook reply late Monday night to a customer who expressed frustration with the lack of information about where Magpul planned to move its operations.
"You have lots of people interested in this, might as well satisfy the masses and come out with it already," Daniel Wooldridge wrote.
On Tuesday morning, the company provided a little more detail about what it was doing in a second reply to Wooldridge's query. It specifically referenced the manufacture of its sights and PMAG ammunition magazines, which, according to its website, can hold 10 to 30 rounds.
"We have started making PMAGs outside CO for the first time ever," the posting reads. "The sights are made outside CO. We are actively moving forward with moving other items out."
Things appeared calm Tuesday at the company's Erie headquarters, 400 Young Court, where the parking lot was mostly full. There were also vehicles parked behind the building.
At the front door, Magpul has placed copies of a note reading: "We apologize but we are unable to sell product at this location." The note provides a web address where customers can order items.
Magpul said on its Facebook page that it would reveal more about its operations, which could include information about a new headquarters location, after the National Rifle Association's annual meeting and exhibition in Houston this weekend.
The company didn't return an emailed request for comment Tuesday afternoon.
Magpul made headlines earlier this year when it said it would pull out of Colorado if a bill banning the sale of magazines with 15 rounds or more in the state became law. Gov. John Hickenlooper signed the bill, along with two other gun-control measures, into law March 20.
The company said at the time it would start moving out of its headquarters in Erie and begin manufacturing magazines again within 30 days. Magpul had planned an announcement about its future a couple of weeks ago but wrote on its Facebook page that the April 15 Boston Marathon bombings "make this a poor time for that."
Magpul employs more than 200 people.
Fans of the company continue to inundate Magpul's Facebook page with requests for the company to relocate where they live. On Tuesday alone, several Texans, a Kansan and a man from Indiana implored Magpul to put down stakes in their states.
"We're holding a place for you in Texas," one man wrote.
Several other visitors to the Magpul Facebook page referred to the Centennial State as the People's Republic of Colorado and commended the company for following through on its pledge to depart the state.
Magpul is one of several Colorado firearms-related firms that have said they would pack up and leave the state in the wake of gun-control legislation.
Denver-based Lawrence Tool & Molding announced in February that it would take jobs and machinery out of the state if Magpul relocates. And early last month, HiViz Shooting Systems said it would relocate operations outside of Colorado due to the gun-control measures passed by state lawmakers.
The company, based in Fort Collins, makes gun sights and recoil pads.

Erie-based Magpul Industries announced the giveaway on the company Facebook page Wednesday.
The ammunition magazine manufacturer will take part in the "A Farewell to Arms" festival in Infinity Park in Glendale on Saturday.
On July 1, the law — which limits bans gun magazines to hold no more than 15 rounds and was signed by Gov. John Hickenlooper in March — goes into effect.
The first 1,500 attendees who are at least 18 years old will get a magazine, the companys Web page said. The event is hosted by thenonprofit Free Colorado, which advocates for the rights of gun owners, according to its website.
