(CNN) -- A man charged at four New York police officers Thursday afternoon, metal hatchet in hand, hitting one officer in the right arm and another in the head, the city's police commissioner said.

The two officers who weren't struck shot and killed the suspect, who has not been identified by name and is believed to be about 32 years old, according to police Commissioner Bill Bratton

The police officer who was struck in the head remains in critical but stable condition.

Authorities are looking to see if the unprovoked attack, in the New York borough of Queens, is tied to recent calls by radicals to attack military and police officers, law enforcement officials say.

Thursday evening the New York Police Department issued a patrol bulletin alerting officers to be in a state of heightened awareness after Wednesday’s murder of a Canadian soldier and shootout at the Parliament complex in Ottawa. The bulletin warns of potential attacks on uniformed officers.

Police from the Intelligence Division are checking the suspect’s hard drives for any cyber activity. There is nothing at this time connecting him to any radical group and the police are still determining the identity of the suspect, officials said.

A rookie police officer was struck in the head by a man wielding a hatchet in the New York City borough of Queens Thursday, in an assault that has police checking for any ties to terror organizations or whether the attack could have been inspired by Wednesday’s lone-wolf attack in Canada.

Police opened fire, killing the 32-year-old suspect and wounding a woman who was nearby, according to officials. The officer, 25, survived the attack. A second police officer, 24, was struck with the hatchet in the arm and is also being treated. The name of the suspect was not immediately released.

The 2 p.m. apparently unprovoked attack occurred as four police officers were posing for a passing photographer when the suspect charged the group, swinging a hatchet with a four-and-a-half-inch blade, officials said. He struck one officer in the arm and another in the head before two officers drew their weapons and opened fire as he swung the hatchet a third time, officials said.

“No known motive for this attack has been established,” Police Commissioner William Bratton told reporters.
The officer struck in the head suffered a fractured skull and was in surgery Thursday evening. As police investigated the scene they discovered a woman a half-block away had been shot in the lower back. She was operated on and is in stable condition.

Danish police have shot and wounded a man at the home of Kurt Westergaard, whose controversial cartoons of the prophet Muhammad sparked a storm of Muslim protest five years ago.

Danish media reported last night that Westergaard, 74, was at home near the city of Aarhus with his wife and grandchild when a 27-year-old Somalian man armed with a knife and axe tried to break in.

Chief superintendant Morten Jensen, from East Jutland police, said: "At 10pm a personal alarm was received from Mr Westergaard's house."

Officers found a man "armed with an axe and a knife in either hand," he said. "He broke a window of Mr Westergaard's house. He tried to attack one officer with an axe and he was shot in his right leg and his left arm." He said the man was not seriously injured and was now in custody.

In 2005 the Jyllands-Posten newspaper published a caricature by Westergaard depicting Muhammad wearing a turban shaped like a bomb with a fuse.

Islamic tradition says no image of the prophet should be produced or shown.

Danish embassies were attacked including the one in Damascus which was burned down in 2006 and death threats against Westergaard forced him into hiding.

In March 2008 Denmark's three main newspapers reprinted the cartoon after the arrest of three men for plotting to murder the artist.The three – a Dane of Moroccan origin and two Tunisians – were picked up in a dawn raid near Aarhus following a long surveillance operation by the country's intelligence services, the PET.

The Dane was eventually released without charge and one of the two Tunisians was deported. The other was sent to live in an asylum centre north of Copenhagen.

The Jyllands-Posten also carried a statement from the cartoonist revealing how he had feared for his life but then "turned fear into anger and indignation".

"It has made me angry that a perfectly normal everyday activity, which I used to do by the thousand, was abused to set off such madness," the statement added.

In today's Jyllands-Posten, Westergaard described the incident: "He threatened to kill me. I ran out to the bathroom where our security room is. I was worried for my grandchild. I was afraid.

"I knew that I could not match him. So I alerted the police. It was scary. It was really close. But we did it. It was good."
Westergaard was moved to a safe place last night but was unable to say what the attempted attack would mean for his future.

"It is too early to say. I must speak with PET and then we will see," he said.

Law-enforcement sources we spoke with identified Zale Thompson as the armed man who charged at a group of NYPD uniformed police assembled on a street corner in Jamaica, Queens, at around 2 p.m. today. ~ TERROR ATTACK IN NEW YORK CITY ~

NEW YORK - An NYPD rookie is in critical condition and another police officer is in stable condition after being attacked by a man wielding a hatchet on a Queens street Thursday, police said.

Two other officers fired on the man, stopping the attack. The assailant was pronounced dead at the scene. A 29-year-old female bystander was also struck by a bullet and underwent surgery at Jamaica Hospital, where she’s recovering, officials said.
The officers, all recent graduates of the Police Academy assigned to the 103rd Precinct in Jamaica, were asked to pose for a picture by a freelance photographer at the intersection of 162nd Street and Jamaica Avenue shortly before 2 p.m. when the man attacked them from behind, Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said.
The suspect “charged at the officers with a hatchet in his hand,” Bratton said. “Unprovoked and not speaking a word, the male then swung at one of the officers with a hatchet, striking his right arm. After striking that officer, the suspect continuing swinging the hatchet, striking a second officer in the head.” (read more)

Thursday on Fox News Channel's "The Kelly File," Rep Peter King (R-NY) said the man accused of attacking New York City police officers with an ax, putting one officer in critical condition with a head wound and the other in stable condition with an arm injury, is a radical Muslim with "terrorist Islamic leanings."

King said, "A number of people I've spoken to clearly there were radical Islamic statements that he's made. I can't tell you exactly where I've gotten all of this but there's documentation showing he's very much anti-white. certainly he is a Muslim. I've heard that, maybe black Muslim. Whether or not it was ISIS, I don't know. But clearly this is a person who has at least some terrorist Islamic leanings. Certainly radical Islamic leanings. Hear with what's happened over the last several days, whether or not he actuality is with ISIS, which probably is not the case, don't want to prejudge that. If he does have mental issues, that's when something like this, when you see what ISIS is doing, people like this they can be provoked. They can act."

'If linked, this is the third terror case in four days'

CNN anchor Anderson Cooper and correspondents discussed a disturbing hatchet attack by 32-year-old Zale Thompson on two NYPD officers Thursday and the potential that Thompson may have been “radicalized” by Islamic State (IS, ISIL, or ISIS) propaganda after a review of his social media accounts.

“What is truly concerning police are his social media postings–Facebook, YouTube, et cetera–which has raised suspicions that this random attack that you see in the surveillance video right there is tied to recent calls by radical groups including ISIS for random attacks like this on law enforcement,” CNN correspondent Jim Sciutto said.

Sciutto said witnesses indicated that Thompson appeared to be stalking the two police officers, one of whom is in critical condition after the attack.

Former DHS official and CNN national security correspondent Juliette Kayyem said even if Thompson was not a member of an organized terror cell or affiliated with IS, the attack is still cause for concern.

“Look, Anderson, that was the first time I had seen the video, just about two minutes ago, and the words ‘my God’ came out of my mouth, and I don’t get easily spooked,” Kayyem said. “We know the call came out by ISIS and others for these random attacks of violence. They matter to ISIS. It shows that they have support and it amplifies their message.”

Due to the proliferation of social media, Kayyem said, lone wolf attacks are “almost impossible to stop.”

“It doesn’t matter whether he was abroad getting trained or not, the power of ISIS or any organization of using social media to radicalize those who have never met them and gone abroad even is the sort of new terrain of counterterrorism,” Kayyem said. “It is almost impossible to stop, as we’ve seen. If this is linked, this is the third incident in a Western country in four days.”

. . . Thompson — whose Facebook page includes Arabic script and an old, black and white photograph of a black-scarved militant — is a “very educated” proponent of “black power” and was a graduate of the College of New Rochelle in Harlem, said a classmate who asked not to be named.

“He always spoke very positively,” said the classmate, who was unaware of Thompson’s recent Islamic leanings. “I would call him a scholar and an intellectual,” she said.

But former neighbors at Thompson’s East New York, Brooklyn, address said that in recent months he had become “weird” and argumentative, constantly fighting with his girlfriend and mother before moving to Jamaica earlier this year. . .
