Manhunt Underway in Kansas After Officer Shot in Head
NOWATA, Okla. — May 29, 2015, 12:23 AM ET
Authorities say two people are in custody and a manhunt is underway in southeastern Kansas after an Oklahoma police officer was shot in the head during a pursuit.
South Coffeyville Police Chief Wade Lamb tells the Tulsa World ( http://bit.ly/1KBPuaZ ) that when an officer tried to pull over an SUV Thursday, the vehicle took off.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says shots were fired from the SUV at an Oologah police cruiser that was assisting in the chase, striking the officer, who was airlifted to a Tulsa hospital. His condition wasn't released.
Authorities say two of the vehicle's occupants were taken into custody after police used stop sticks.
Lamb says a third escaped, carjacked another car and shot the driver.
Lamb says the suspect made it to Liberty, Kansas, before crashing and fleeing on foot.
A search was underway late Thursday.

An officer-involved shooting north of Tulsa followed a pursuit making its way into Kansas where more shots were fired from an armed suspect.
The search is ongoing in an area near the town of Liberty.
Prior to the possible standoff in Kansas, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reports there was a police pursuit of a vehicle containing three people, just south of the Kansas border. At some point in the chase, the Oologah, Okla.-officer in pursuit was shot in the head and rolled his vehicle just north of Nowata, Okla.
The officer was taken to the hospital, but is expected to survive, Tulsa CBS-affiliate, KOTV reports.
Other agencies then became involved in the chase. The suspects abandoned their SUV and carjacked another vehicle, shooting one of its occupants.
The highway patrol reports that when troopers first searched the abandoned SUV, they found body armor and assault rifles.
The highway patrol says two of the suspects, a man and a woman, were taken into custody, but a third made his way to southeast Kansas. The suspect was believed to be hiding in a wooded area near Highway 169 in Montgomery County.
Officers focused on a house near Liberty, where they believed the suspect may have been hiding.
Law enforcement shut down Highway 169 near the Liberty exit as they searched for the suspect. They've also shut down the highway where the officer was shot.
KOTV reports law enforcement set up a perimeter of about one square mile in the area near Liberty where gunfire was exchanged.

Manhunt Ends in Kansas After Cop Shot in Head During Car Chase
NEXT VIDEO Fourth Suspect Arrested In Killing Of Two Cops
Three men have been arrested, including one who was captured early Friday in southeast Kansas, after an Oklahoma police officer was shot in the head during a traffic chase, authorities said.
Alejandro Garcia was captured while fleeing on foot after crashing a stolen car near Liberty, Kansas, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office said in a brief news release.
The other two suspects, Cesar Rios, 23, and Roxanna Mendoza 20, were arrested Thursday night in South Coffeyville, just south of the Kansas border. No other details about the suspects were immediately released.
The incident began when an officer tried to stop an SUV Thursday evening in Rogers County, Oklahoma. The vehicle took off with three people inside, headed north, South Coffeyville Police Chief Wade Lamb told the Tulsa World.
During the chase, someone inside the SUV shot at an Oologah police cruiser that was assisting in the chase, striking an officer in the head, Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Dwight Durant said.
The cruiser crashed into a ditch and the officer was airlifted to a Tulsa hospital. The officer's condition has not been released, though Durant told the newspaper he was awake when he was put into the medical helicopter.
After Rios and Mendoza were arrested, Garcia carjacked another car, shooting the driver, and escaped, Lamb said.
That motorist's condition wasn't immediately clear.
