This may look like your every day package, but when you're not expecting a delivery from UPS that's when things get suspicious.

On Tuesday night a box was shipped to a random home in Prichard. According to police the homeowners called authorities once they opened the package and realized there were drugs inside, hidden beneath several shirts.

Turns out marijuana was shipped from a UPS Store in Arizona and sent to a decoy home. The homeowners were not part of the scheme according to police.

The way it works is once the package is tracked online and delivered to a certain home, someone nearby is waiting to pickup the package before the homeowner knows it's there.

"The fact is that it's still illegal in Alabama whether you purchase it in Colorado, New Mexico or Texas it really doesn't matter it's illegal to possess in Alabama and until they change it we'll continue to enforce that," said Chief James Barber.

It's a trend seen across the Port City.

"What we're seeing is a lot of really high-grade marijuana, very high-grade marijuana," said Chief Barber.

News 5 reached out to UPS and they tell us they see the problem occassionally. They can sometimes spot things on their own, but they collaborate with law enforcement according to a spokesperson.

In Tuesday night's case, Prichard Police Chief Jerry Speziale says moth balls were used to hide the smell so drug-sniffing dogs would never catch on.

If you spot a suspicious package call police.
