The quake was felt hundreds of miles away in Thailand. The 6.8 magnitude tremor was so powerful, it was felt hundreds of miles away, in neighbouring Thailand.

People in Yangon, the country's main city, rushed from tower blocks and other tall buildings, while objects, including buddhist shrines, reportedly fell in people's homes.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the tremor was centered about 15 miles west of Chauk, an area west of the ancient capital of Bagan.

Amazingly, there has been just one reported death so far, but ancient Buddhist temples have been badly damaged, with images of the destruction emerging on Twitter.

A local authory spokesman said: "Subsequent tremors went on for minutes. There was also some sound as well. A pagoda collapsed in Salay and a building also collapsed."

The USGS said, unlike the shallow earthquake that struck in Italy in the early hours, killing at least 38, the Myanmar quake was at a much greater depth of 52 miles.

Deeper quakes tend to cause less damage as much of the power is absorbed under the ground.

But the Burmese quake was felt in around six neighbouring states to Myanmar, and it also caused buildings to sway in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, 800 miles away.
