NC Congressman Patrick T. McHenry SUPPORTS JON Boehner
August 27, 2015

Shelby, NC 28150-5254
Dear Mr. Walker:
Thank you for contacting my office regarding Speaker Boehner's leadership position in the House of Representatives. I appreciate having the benefit of your thoughts.
On July 28, 2015, Representative Mark Meadows (R-NC) filed House Resolution (H.Res.) 385, known as a "motion to vacate the chair," in an effort to remove Speaker Boehner (R-OH) from his position as Speaker of the House. Although I have worked closely with Representative Meadows on a number of issues and respect the work that he has done throughout his two terms in Congress, I do not agree with his approach.
In his explanation behind filing the resolution, Representative Meadows claimed that his resolution was a way to spark a "family discussion" within the Republican Conference. However, the resolution does the opposite. It is a motion to remove Speaker Boehner from office. Thus, my fear is that the resolution will needlessly pit like-minded conservatives against one another, instead of increasing positive dialogue among conservatives.
Moreover, Representative Meadow's filing diverted attention away from critical policy issues facing our nation. By filing this resolution days before Members returned to their districts for the district work period, important dialogue with constituents shifted away from more critical issues and towards internal squabble. We should be focusing our time and energy on more pressing matters, including stopping President Obama's Nuclear Deal with Iran and ending taxpayer support of the deplorable internal operations and practices of Planned Parenthood.
While we may not agree on this issue, I hope we can find common ground in the future. Regardless of your stance on this issue, rest assured that the Republican Conference as a whole remains committed to reining in vast executive overreach by the Obama Administration, cutting unnecessary government spending and regulation, and instituting legislation that will promote true economic growth and stability.
Thank you again for contacting my office. It is an honor to serve as your United States Congressman. Your suggestions are always welcome and if ever I may be of assistance, please do not hesitate to call me.
Sincerely,
Patrick T. McHenry
Member of Congress
