Network provider Cloudflare to drop 8chan after El Paso shooting

Network provider Cloudflare to drop 8chan after El Paso shooting

Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince said the anonymous internet forum's "lawlessness" caused "multiple tragic deaths."

Internet services provider Cloudflare announced on Sunday that it planned to cease doing business with an online forum that a gunman apparently used before killing 20 people in El Paso, Texas, the company said.

Cloudflare’s CEO, Matthew Prince, wrote in a blog post that his company was dropping 8chan after gunmen in Christchurch, New Zealand, and Poway, California, also used the site.

The anonymous forum, which the Anti-Defamation League has tied to the rise of online extremism, had shown itself to be “lawless,” Prince said. "That lawlessness has caused multiple tragic deaths. Even if 8chan may not have violated the letter of the law in refusing to moderate their hate-filled community, they have created an environment that revels in violating its spirit.”

In El Paso, investigators are “reasonably confident” that suspect Patrick Crusius, 21, posted an anti-immigrant screed on the site shortly before the shooting. That note referenced the mass killing in Christchurch, when a white supremacist gunman allegedly gunned down 51 people and posted links to a livestream of the attack on 8chan.

    In Poway
, a gunman also posted “a hate-filled ‘open letter’ on 8chan,'" Prince said. “8chan has repeatedly proven itself to a be a cesspool of hate.”

Cloudflare provides services like protection against common cyberattacks that can cripple websites, and Prince has described himself as a “free-speech absolutist." The company has only cut service once before — to neo-Nazi site the Daily Stormer after a white supremacist protest in Charlottesville, Virginia.

At the time, Prince, called the decision "arbitrary" and "dangerous," and warned of growing calls to censor speech on the internet.

Frederick Brennan, who started 8chan, told The New York Times on Sunday that the website should be shut down.

Cloudflare's decision to stop doing business with Daily Stormer did not mark the end of the extremist website. It is still operational thanks in part to Bitmitigate, a Seattle-based company that provides similar services to Cloudflare.

The move comes as platforms including Facebook, YouTube and Twitter have cracked down on hate speech, citing an interest in protecting their users and fostering healthy discussion.

Cloudflare, however, is a different type of company, providing services that help websites stay online, which put it in a position of power over the internet as a whole rather than just a particular platform. Prince has pointed to Cloudflare's role in the internet ecosystem as a major reason why his company has almost always declined to take action against particular websites.

On Sunday, message threads lionizing the recent mass shooters were eclipsed by 8chan users mourning Cloudflare’s decision.

In threads titled “It’s over,” and “The end,” some users suggested alternative sites alongside racist rants and downplayed the effects of a shutdown.

One offered bleakly, “so just post our manifestos to facebook now?”

Sporadic outages at 8chan and a new host after mass shooting

    Posted: Monday, August 5, 2019 12:00 pm | Updated: 12:33 pm, Mon Aug 5, 2019.
    Associated Press |

NEW YORK (AP) — The online message board 8chan suffered sporadic outages Monday after its cybersecurity provider cut it off for what it called a "cesspool of hate" following mass shootings in Texas and Ohio.

But the board, which has a history of use by violent extremists, also quickly found a new online host. That company also provides such support for Gab.com, another social media site frequented by white supremacists that doesn't ban hate speech.

8chan was up and down after the security company Cloudflare said it would no longer provide services that protect web sites from denial-of-service attacks that can make them unreachable.

The operators of 8chan said there might be downtime in the next one or two days as the site sought a solution, and online records indicated the site had been moved to a new domain host: Sammamish, Washington-based web services provider Epik.com.

The company bills itself on its site as "the Swiss bank of domains." Epik.com did not immediately respond to requests sent by email and via LinkedIn

Police are investigating commentary posted on 8chan and believed to have been written by the suspect in a shooting Saturday that killed 20 people in El Paso, Texas.

If there is a connection, it would be the third known instance of a shooter posting to the site before going on a rampage following mass shootings at two New Zealand mosques in the spring, and another at a California synagogue.

The suspect in El Paso "appears to have been inspired" by discussions on 8chan, said Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince in a blog post on his company's site. He said a suspect in an earlier shooting at a synagogue in Poway, California, also posted a "hate-filled 'open letter'" on 8chan, as did the mosque attacker in Christchurch, New Zealand.

"8chan has repeatedly proven itself to be a cesspool of hate," wrote Prince. "They have proven themselves to be lawless and that lawlessness has caused multiple tragic deaths."

Prince acknowledged that little can be done under current rules to silence sites like 8chan.

Two years ago, Cloudflare terminated service to the Daily Stormer, a neo-Nazi and white supremacist site.

"Today, the Daily Stormer is still available and still disgusting," Prince wrote. "They have bragged that they have more readers than ever. They are no longer Cloudflare's problem, but they remain the Internet's problem."

In fact, the Daily Stormer's new security provider, BitMitigate, was purchased in February by Epik.com , whose CEO is Robert Monster of Bellevue, Washington.

In November, Monster defended in a blog post his company's decision to host Gab.com after its previous domain host, GoDaddy, dropped it.

8chan said it was coming back online. Now another internet company appears to have blocked it

    BY GRAHAM KATES
    AUGUST 5, 2019 / 4:11 PM / CBS NEWS

Hours after a web security and network provider cut off 8chan, a controversial far-right online forum linked to white supremacy, the website's new provider is facing repercussions. The suspected terrorist who shot and killed 22, and injured 24 more in an El Paso, Texas Walmart, allegedly posted a hate-filled screed to 8chan before his attack Saturday.

An 8chan administrator announced early Monday that it would be relaunching the site using the Canadian cybersecurity company BitMitigate as a replacement for the online services firm Cloudflare. 8chan was temporarily shut down Sunday night, after Cloudflare announced it would no longer support the controversial site.

BitMitigate was previously selected by another far-right hate site, the Daily Stormer, after Cloudflare discontinued that site's services in 2017. In February, BitMitigate was purchased by Epik, a Washington State-based company that gained notoriety in November 2018 after it agreed to provide services to Gab, a social media site associated with far-right ideologies that lost its hosting provider after an avid poster on the site killed 11 people in a Pittsburgh synagogue.

In announcing the decision to cut ties with 8chan, Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince called the site "a cesspool of hate."

Four hours after the Cloudflare decision was first announced Sunday, Epik CEO Rob Monster posted on Gab that BitMitigate could be an alternative option for 8chan.

About one hour later, 8chan administrator Ron Watkins posted to Twitter that the site was switching to BitMitigate. By early Monday morning, Watkins tweeted that 8chan was restored throughout much of the world.

But soon after, Epik ran into trouble of its own that may have ultimately caused 8chan to stop operating once again. On Monday morning, Stanford University researcher and former Facebook Chief Security Officer Alex Stamos pointed out that some of Epik's servers are rented from another company. Soon after Stamos tweeted, that company, Voxility, cut off Epik.

In case you were wondering, it looks like the new host of 8chan and Daily Stormer will effectively be @voxility. It looks like Epik/Bitmitigate owns very little of their own hardware and instead rents Voxility's servers and AS.https://www.voxility.com/ https://bgp.he.net/AS3223#_prefixes …

Voxility's Vice President of Business Development, Maria Sirbu, said in a phone call with CBS News that the company tries to "keep (its) network clean."

"At this point, the entire network that supported the 8chan website is completely banned from Voxility," Sirbu said, adding that Voxility's decision affected not just 8chan, but all Epik and BitMitigate services associated with Voxility's servers:

"This company is no longer using our services. We are not a fan of hate speech and this is against our policy."

About an hour later, Watkins tweeted that issues with BitMitigate had caused 8chan to go dark once again.

In a statement to CBS News, Epik said its "services fill the ever-growing need for a neutral service provider that will not arbitrarily terminate accounts based on social or political pressure."

"Specific to any of the 'Chan' sites, Epik did not solicit this business. We have also not made a definitive decision about whether to provide DDoS mitigation or Content Delivery services for them. We will evaluate this in the coming days," the company said.
