50 senators to NFL: Change Redskins' name

    Published May 22, 2014Associated Press

Half the U.S. Senate urged NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Thursday to change the Washington Redskins' name, saying it is a racist slur and the time is ripe to replace it.
In a letter, 49 senators cited the NBA's quick action recently to ban Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling for life after he was heard on an audio recording making offensive comments about blacks. They said Goodell should formally push to rename the Redskins.
"We urge you and the National Football League to send the same clear message as the NBA did: that racism and bigotry have no place in professional sports," read the letter, which did not use the word "Redskins."
The letter comes at a time of growing pressure to change the team name, with statements in recent months from President Barack Obama, lawmakers of both parties and civil rights groups.
Redskins owner Daniel Snyder has refused to change the name, citing tradition. The franchise has been known as the Redskins since 1933, when it played in Boston.
In a written response, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said "diversity and inclusion" has long been a focus of the NFL.
"The intent of the team's name has always been to present a strong, positive and respectful image," McCarthy said. "The name is not used by the team or the NFL in any other context, though we respect those that view it differently."
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., led the letter-writing effort. All senators on the letter are Democrats. Cantwell spokesman Jared Leopold said Republicans were not asked to participate.
Democrats not signing the letter were Tim Kaine and Mark Warner of nearby Virginia, where the team's headquarters are; Mark Pryor of Arkansas and Mark Begich of Alaska, in tight re-election races this year; and moderate Joe Manchin of West Virginia.
Another, Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., wrote his own letter to Goodell, saying he doesn't believe that retaining the Redskins name "is appropriate in this day and age." He described himself as "one of your great fans for both the game and you personally."
The letter said tribal organizations representing more than 2 million Native Americans across the U.S. have said they want the Redskins name dropped.
Despite federal laws protecting their identity, "Every Sunday during football season, the Washington, D.C., football team mocks their culture," the senators wrote.
"The NFL can no longer ignore this and perpetuate the use of this name as anything but what it is: a racial slur," the letter said.

NFL Responds To Harry Reid And The Other 49 Senators Who Demanded Redskins Change Their Name

By Steve Straub On May 22, 2014 · Leave a Comment · In US

Given the extent of the problems we’re facing you would think Harry Reid and company would have more important things to do than worry about the name of a football team!

    Via BizPac Review:
At least 40 American veterans in Phoenix may have died while waiting for care from the Veterans Administration and the investigation of secret waiting lists has now spread to 26 facilities across the country.
But Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and 48 fellow Democrats in the U.S. Senate have more pressing matters to attend to, such as urging NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to change the team name of the Washington Redskins.
Hoping to take advantage of the NBA’s ban for life of Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling for making disparaging comments about blacks, the senators signed on to a letter that said the Redskins name is a racial slur, according to The Washington Post.
Thank goodness the NFL doesn’t really care much what Harry Reid thinks about the teams name, as The Hill reports:
The NFL signaled Thursday it would not heed the call of 50 Democratic senators to support changing the name of the Washington Redskins.
The Redskins name is not used by the NFL in any other context than to present a “strong, positive and respectful image,” the league said after nearly every Democratic senator signed a letter addressed to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
The league said it respects the opinions of those who view it differently, pointing out that that two senators from Virginia, where the team headquarters are located, did not sign on.
“The NFL has long demonstrated a commitment to progressive leadership on issues of diversity and inclusion, both on and off the field,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said in a statement. “The intent of the team’s name has always been to present a strong, positive and respectful image. The name is not used by the team or the NFL in any other context, though we respect those that view it differently.”
Do you think the Washington Redskins should keep their name or should they bow to political correctness and change it?

Senate Uses Government Time, Money To Write Letter Against The Redskins Name

Fifty U.S. Senators have sent a signed letter to the NFL urging them to change the name of the Washington Redskins.
The senators are all Democrats, including Elizabeth Warren, who claimed to be a Native American while working at Harvard Law School.
The letter, addressed to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, cites the recent scandal over Clippers owner Donald Sterling as impetus to reexamine the Redskins name. Five Democrats did not sign the letter: Mark Warner and Tim Kaine of Virginia, Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Joe Donnelly of Indiana and Mark Pryor of Arkansas. It was never circulated among Republicans to sign, reports the New York Times.
The letter begins, “We urge you and the National Football League to send the same clear message as the N.B.A. did: that racism and bigotry have no place in professional sports. It’s time for the NFL to endorse a name change for the Washington, D.C. football team.”
“We urge the N.F.L. to formally support a name change for the Washington football team,” the senators write.
The letter was first conceived of by Sen. Maria Cantwell, but majority leader Harry Reid was the one who made it a priority.
“I have 22 tribal organizations in Nevada,” Reid told the Times. “They are not mascots. They are human beings. And this term Redskins is offensive to them.”
The NFL said they have yet to receive this letter, but team spokesman Brian McCarthy said in a statement that the NFL ”has long demonstrated a commitment to progressive leadership on issues of diversity and inclusion, both on and off the field.”
“The intent of the team’s name has always been to present a strong, positive and respectful image. The name is not used by the team or the N.F.L. in any other context, though we respect those that view it differently.”
Redskins owner Dan Snyder has repeatedly said he will not change the name.

Redskins Have Some Bad News for Senate Dems About Their Attempt to Foist Made-Up PC Rules on Them

By Caroline Schaeffer 8 hours ago

Washington Redskins President Bruce Allen responded to the 49 Democrats who are calling for a change to the team’s name, which they claim is racist.
According to Fox News, Allen wrote a three page letter which said the 82-year-old name is respectful of Native Americans, and that most Native Americans and Americans as a whole support the name.
Almost all of the Senate Democrats – 49 out of 53 – signed a letter addressed to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, asking him to find a way to change the name. Senate Republicans were reportedly not asked to participate.
The letter cited the NBA’s recent decision to ban Clippers owner Donald Sterling for life following the release of tapes in which he can be heard making comments about African Americans.
Allen and owner Daniel Snyder have held fast, citing the long history of the team. Additionally, Allen’s letter noted that Native American leaders designed the teams logos and that 83% of polled Americans favor keeping the name.
    Via Fox News:
“Our use of `Redskins’ as the name of our football team for more than 80 years has always been respectful of and shown reverence toward the proud legacy and traditions of Native Americans.”
Democrats claim that tribal organizations representing over two million Native Americans say they want the name dropped. They have spent time on the Senate floor discussing why the name should be dropped.
The NFL has publicly supported the Redskins, saying that the team’s name has always been intended to “present a strong, positive, and respectful image.” And this makes perfect sense: Who would pick a team name that they didn’t believe honored the organization?

Harry Reid Gleefully Cheers Patent Office Yanking Redskins Trademark

The most vocal opponent to the Redskins team name and owner, Harry Reid, was seen on the floor of the Senate today cheering the Patent and Trademark Office’s decision to yank the team’s trademarks.

The most vocal opponent to the Redskins team name and owner, Harry Reid, was seen on the floor of the Senate today cheering the Patent and Trademark Office’s decision to yank the team’s trademarks. He was joined by fellow Senate Democrat, Maria Cantwell, in lauding the government stripping a private business of its free speech rights, shocker right?

According to RollCall, Cantwell started by criticizing the Redskins moniker as a racial slur.

“We’re so excited to know that finally people are recognizing that this issue can no longer be a business case for the NFL to use this patent,” Cantwell said. “They will not be able to forcefully exclude other people from having derivatives of this logo or the name.

“This is not the end of this case, but this is a landmark decision by the Patent Office that says that the NFL team here in Washington, DC, does not have a patentable name, and that this is an offensive term, not patentable by the patent office,” Cantwell continued.

Once she finished her victory lap, Reid took the floor and said “it’s just a matter of time before [Snyder’s] forced to change the name.”

“There are 27 tribes in the state of Nevada, Native Americans. The issue of the name Redskins is very important to every one of those tribes,” Reid said.

“Every time they hear this name is a sad reminder of a long tradition of racism and bigotry.”

Reid then accused Snyder of trying to bribe one of the Nevada tribes with a car but his offer was refused.

“Daniel Snyder says it’s about tradition. I ask, what tradition? The tradition of racism is all that that name leaves in its wake,” said Reid. “The writing is on the wall. It’s on the wall in giant blinking neon lights. The name will change.”

Do you think the Redskins should change their name? Let us know with a comment!

7 Wildly Offensive Sports Team Names Obama’s Cool With

Written by Doug Giles on June 19, 2014

In typical foot stomping fashion, the fascistic Harry Reid and one Barack Hussein Obama, evidently leaned on the US Patent office and got them to 86 the Washington Redskins’ trademark registration, calling it ‘disparaging to Native Americans’. And when they say ‘Native Americans’, they mean Elizabeth Warren who claims she’s an Indian because she once saw one when she was six years old.

Interestingly enough, ClashDaily.com has been told by inside sources that Obama, Reid and the other whiny control freaks do not have any problems with the following sports team’s names nor their mascots. Check it out…

    1. The ‘Mississippi Creepy Ass Crackers’ baseball team whose mascot is some inbred white Bubba sporting a sleeveless shirt with three teeth and an IQ of 50.
    2. Berkeley, California’s soccer team named, ‘All Christians Suck’, whose mascot happens to be a bearded drag queen that runs around the field grabbing his crotch and holding a cross upside down.
    3. The ‘Obama Bootlickers’ of Portland, Oregon whose mascot happens to be a Chris Matthews look-a-like who stands on the sidelines quivering his leg like Elvis every time Obama’s name is mentioned, also happens to be an appropriate trademark.
    4. The ‘Nashville NSA Spies’ appears to be cool with BHO and the boys with their hacked cell phone mascot that mysteriously turns on and off.
    5. The Illinois ‘IRS Leftist Thugs’ are also muy bueno to Obama. We have been told that Barack even designed their mascot’s uniform after a destroyed hard-drive.
    6. Arizona’s ‘Dead Vets’ came under a little scrutiny in the last few years but were declared inoffensive to the administration because, well…they don’t care about our vets or what we think. Their WH approved mascot is a door with an ‘out to lunch come back when it’s too late’ sign with a big middle finger on it.
    7. And lastly, another team name that passed the Obama muster was the ‘San Francisco Sasquatches’ whose mascot is a giant Michelle Obama who lurches out onto the field like Iron Maiden’s monster, Eddie The Head, used to do during their concerts. Barack was actually overheard at a Sasquatch game last year saying, “Now that’s some funny sh*t” when she strode out on the field during halftime scaring children and snatching hotdogs from the fans’ hands.
