Official says Colorado Planned Parenthood gunman ID'd as Robert Lewis Dear

Official says Colorado Planned Parenthood gunman ID'd as Robert Lewis Dear

A law enforcement official tells the Associated Press the gunman in a shooting at a Colorado Planned Parenthood Friday has been identified as Robert Lewis Dear.

The shooter is from North Carolina, the unidentified official told AP. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to speak about the ongoing investigation.

Three people, including one police officer, were killed in Friday’s attack. The gunman was taken into custody after an hours-long standoff and shootout. Authorities have yet to determine a motive behind the shooting or whether the gunman had any connection to Planned Parenthood.

The University of Colorado in Colorado Springs police department identified the officer killed as Garrett Swasey, 44, a six-year veteran of the force. Nine other people, including five police officers, were shot and are in good condition, police said.

Colorado Springs Police have yet to confirm the identity of the shooter and said they will not confirm the identity of the gunman Friday night.

Lt. Catherine Buckley of the Colorado Springs Police Department said the gunman, described as wearing a long coat and armed with a rifle, gave up after officers inside the building shouted at him. He previously had been firing at police who entered the facility.

Buckley also said the unidentified man had brought "items" with him inside the building and left some outside, meaning officers had to make sure they were not "any kind of devices."

The gunman apparently began his deadly spree at the Planned Parenthood building, although it was not clear if his motive was related to the organization.

"We don't have any information on this individual's mentality, or his ideas or ideology," Buckley said.

After a brief lull, he began shooting again at police, who had gotten inside the building.

Buckley said there was no information indicating the gunman himself had been shot.

Multiple police vehicles and ambulances were parked outside the building in a snowstorm and 17 degree temperatures.

Police closed Centennial Boulevard in both directions and customers were locked down at a King Soopers grocery store and several nearby shops in the strip mall area. Buckley said officers were working through the process of releasing them.

Denise Speller, manager at a nearby haircut salon, told the Gazette she heard 10 to 20 gunshots in the span of less than five minutes.

She said she saw a police cruiser and two officers outside near Chase Bank, not far from the Planned Parenthood facility. One of the officers appeared to fall to the ground and the other office knelt down to render aid, then tried to get the officer to safety behind the car, she said. Another officer told Speller to seek shelter inside the building.

“We’re still pretty freaked out,” Speller said by phone. “We can’t stop shaking. For now we’re stuck back here not knowing.”

Colorado Planned Parenthood shooting: 3 dead, suspect captured

By Catherine E. Shoichet, AnneClaire Stapleton and Greg Botelho, CNN

Updated 11:37 PM ET, Fri November 27, 2015

(CNN)Two civilians and a police officer were killed when a gunman opened fire at a Colorado Planned Parenthood clinic in a nearly six-hour standoff Friday.

The suspected gunman is Robert Lewis Dear, 59, a law enforcement official told CNN. The official did not provide additional information.

Police captured him, but they're still working to pinpoint his motive -- and make sure he didn't leave any explosives inside or outside the Colorado Springs building.

Bomb technicians are investigating what's believed to be the suspect's vehicle in a parking lot, a law enforcement official said.

It was not immediately clear why Planned Parenthood was the target of the shooting.

One Planned Parenthood official said the motive behind the attack was unknown, but pointed to what she called a "poisonous environment that feeds domestic terrorism" as a possible cause.

"We don't yet know the full circumstances and motives behind this criminal action, and we don't yet know if Planned Parenthood was in fact the target of this attack," Vicki Cowart, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, said in a written statement. "We share the concerns of many Americans that extremists are creating a poisonous environment that feeds domestic terrorism in this country. We will never back away from providing care in a safe, supportive environment that millions of people rely on and trust."

Cowart told CNN she believes all staff and patients from the clinic are accounted for.

"We're still reaching out to confirm individuals, how they are. I believe no one of our staff was severely injured. I also believe at this time that none of our patients were injured," she told CNN.

    Officer was a six-year veteran

The slain officer, 44-year-old Garrett Swasey, worked for the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs and was on campus about 10 miles away when the shooting broke out. He went to the scene "in support of an officer under fire," the school's chancellor said in a statement.

Swasey was a six-year veteran of the university's police force.

Four civilians and five police officers were taken to hospitals with gunshot wounds. The injured victims were in good condition Friday night, police Lt. Catherine Buckley said.

"The officers, they're obviously in some pain, but thankfully they're alive and talking to us, and they're heroes ... The courage they displayed today saved many, many lives -- no doubt," Colorado Springs Fire Chief Christopher Riley said.

In a statement released late Friday, Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards thanked law enforcement officers.

"Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of the brave law enforcement officers who put themselves in harm's way in Colorado Springs," she said.

    Siege lasted for hours

The announcement of the suspect's arrest came nearly six hours after someone first called 911 around 11:30 a.m. (1:30 p.m. ET) and reported a shooter was inside the Planned Parenthood building, which is near a shopping center and numerous offices.

For hours, police reported shootouts with the gunman, warning people to stay inside nearby businesses and seek shelter.

The shooting brought life to a standstill as police closed roads and people were trapped inside businesses for hours in a busy corner of the central Colorado city, which has more than 400,000 residents.

First, Tessa Smart saw a look of concern flash across a patient's face in a nearby chiropractor's office where she works. Then she heard the gunfire.

"I heard a bullet go right by the door and hit something," she told CNN. "And I ran back to my desk and grabbed a bunch of keys and fumbled at the door trying to find one to lock it. ... As I was doing that I was seeing the police commotion outside, police running everywhere, ducking behind cars with guns."

Denise Speller, who works at a salon, said she heard at least 10 gunshots go off and saw a police officer get hit.

    "It was terrifying," she said.

Joan Motolinia said he got a phone call Friday afternoon from his sister, who was inside the clinic.

"I heard the shooting," he said, choking up as he described the situation to reporters. "She couldn't say too much because she was afraid."

In a nearby grocery store, an announcement over the intercom told shoppers they weren't allowed to leave. They huddled with staff at the back of the supermarket.

It was shocking to watch SWAT teams while holed up inside a nail salon, witness Jill Lavelle said.

"Seeing the SWAT members squatting down in their shields and their riot gear, with their automatic rifles out, that was very ... I never have experienced anything like that before," she said.

Despite initial fears that the shooter could be on the loose outside, authorities now believe he remained inside the Planned Parenthood building throughout the siege, Buckley said.

Several injured victims made their way into a nearby bank, she said.

Attack comes as Planned Parenthood faces criticism

Hours after the shooting began, video from CNN affiliates showed people in medical scrubs and white coats being escorted from the scene.

Planned Parenthood is a national health care provider that delivers reproductive health care and sex education to women and men throughout the United States. The organization runs nearly 700 health centers throughout the United States, according to its website.

The group says each year 2.7 million people in the United States visit its health centers for health care services and information. Abortion is among the services Planned Parenthood clinics provide, an issue that's made the organization a target in the past.

It's faced sharp criticism in Washington and from some Republican presidential candidates on the campaign trail after an anti-abortion group released a series of videos alleging that Planned Parenthood engaged in the selling of fetal organs and parts for profit.

Planned Parenthood has strongly disputed the videos and contended the tapes provide a distorted account because they are heavily edited.

At least three Planned Parenthood buildings have been vandalized since September.

Last year, abortion providers in the United States saw 12 incidents of vandalism, one burglary, one invasion, one arson attack, one death threat and four stalking incidents, according to the National Abortion Federation.

Colorado shooting suspect said 'no more baby parts': reports

    Reuters By Keith Coffman

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Reuters) - The man accused of opening fire at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado and killing three people said "no more baby parts" while he was being arrested, NBC News and other media reported on Saturday, citing unnamed law enforcement sources.

The utterance would appear to reference the controversy surrounding the organization's health services, which include abortion, and its role in delivering fetal tissue to medical researchers.

It could hint at a possible motive for the rampage, though NBC reported that its sources said investigators still did not know what had motivated the gunman.

Authorities have not discussed a motive for the attack at the Colorado Springs clinic, which left a police officer and two civilians dead and nine people wounded. Federal law enforcement authorities referred questions to local police. Colorado Springs police could not be reached for comment.

Shortly after the media reports, Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch released a statement in which she condemned the shooting.

"This unconscionable attack was not only a crime against the Colorado Springs community, but a crime against women receiving healthcare services at Planned Parenthood, law enforcement seeking to protect and serve, and other innocent people," she said in the statement.

The wounded included five police officers and four civilians, who were listed in good condition at area hospitals.

Garrett Swasey, 44, who was killed in the attack, was a campus police officer for the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs who joined city police in responding to reports of shots fired at the clinic, authorities said. The father of two served as an elder at Hope Chapel, the church said on its website.

The suspect, identified as Robert Lewis Dear, 57, was taken into custody at the Planned Parenthood clinic after an hours-long standoff with police and jailed ahead of a court appearance scheduled for Monday.

It was not clear if Dear, a South Carolina native who appeared to have moved to Colorado last year, had retained an attorney.

The shooting was believed to be the first fatal attack at an abortion provider in the United States in six years, although it was not known if it was related to the clinic's abortion services. The Colorado Springs center has been repeatedly targeted for protests by anti-abortion activists.

Planned Parenthood came under fire this year after officials of the organization were secretly recorded by an anti-abortion group discussing how to obtain human tissue from aborted fetuses.

The videos have triggered protests over the national non-profit organization's role in such activities and have become an issue in the 2016 presidential election race as conservatives in Congress seek to cut off Planned Parenthood's federal funding. Planned Parenthood has strongly denied doing anything illegal or unethical.

"We don’t yet know if Planned Parenthood was in fact the target of this attack," said Vicki Cowart, chief executive of Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains.

In recent years, Planned Parenthood moved its Colorado Springs clinic to a facility on the city's northwest side that opponents of abortion have called a "fortress."

The Planned Parenthood Federation of America is based in New York and Washington.

At least eight workers at clinics providing abortions have been killed since 1977, according to the National Abortion Federation, most recently in 2009 when doctor George Tiller was shot to death at church in Wichita, Kansas.

It said that clinics operated by various groups reported nearly 7,000 incidents of trespassing, vandalism, arson, death threats, and other forms of violence since 1977.

    NEWCOMER TO COLORADO

Except for his name and age, police have only said that Dear recently resided in rural Hartsel, Colorado, about 60 miles west of Colorado Springs. Official records showed that he has a history of brushes with the law.

Dear lived in a trailer parked 50 yards off the highway, sharing it with a woman who may have been his wife though she rarely left the property, according to Zigmond Post Jr., who lives about a quarter of a mile away.

Post told Reuters that he first met Dear when a pair of dogs escaped from his property and Dear locked them in his yard. Dear was friendly when Post arrived to retrieve the dogs but took the opportunity to complain about President Barack Obama.

"We got the dogs back and everything and as we were getting ready to leave he handed us some anti-Obama pamphlets and told us to look over them," Post said.

Post said he did not interact with Dear again until Wednesday, when the two men exchanged pleasantries at the post office.

"We all live out here because for some reason or another we like our solitude," Post said. "He seemed like a guy who wouldn't speak unless spoken to."

Post said he believed the woman was still living in Dear's trailer on Saturday morning when police, SWAT teams and firefighters arrived to search it. He said he heard a single gunshot from inside before they entered.

Dear appears to have moved to Hartsel from the rural Swannanoa-Black Mountain area of North Carolina last year. Records showed he purchased the Colorado property for $6,000 in October 2014 and registered to vote as an independent.

Dear was still living in Swannanoa in July 2014, according to the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office, which said he was issued a civil citation for allowing his dogs to run loose.

    SOUTH CAROLINA NATIVE

Dear was born in South Carolina and lived in Walterboro during the 1990s and early 2000s. He was married in 1995 to Pam Dear and records showed that he had a son, Taylor Dear.

Court records did not show any criminal convictions for Dear in South Carolina, but law enforcement officers were called on several occasions after complaints about him.

According to the Colleton County Sheriff's Office, Dear's wife accused him of assaulting her at their home in 1997, but she declined to file charges against him.

In 2002 he was accused of shooting a neighbor's dog with a pellet gun, and that same year he was arrested after being accused of hiding in the bushes at a neighbor's house and leering at her. Court records showed he was charged with peeping to invade someone's privacy, but the charge was dismissed by a judge and a restraining order was issued against him.

The Colleton County Sheriff's Office also said that Dear had been arrested for animal cruelty in 2003. No court record was available online for that case.

Cabin-dwelling recluse ‘Planned Parenthood gunman' was once a happily married father and art dealer – but became a pot-smoking oddball who sought sadomasochistic sex online after divorce

The suspect accused of killing three people in an attack on a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado was once a happy father and art dealer who painted and listened to rock music, a report has revealed.

Robert Dear, 57, who allegedly burst into the clinic in Colorado Springs on Friday and opened fire, was a recluse who moved to a remote cabin in the state a year ago, his neighbors have told Daily Mail Online.

But a new report by the New York Times has revealed that Dear was once a happily married family man who lived with his wife and son in South Carolina.

Since his 2000 divorce, Dear seems to have declined into a loner who lives in a remote cabin, seeking bondage and sadomasochistic sex online and smoking marijuana.

Dear's former wife of 16 years, 54-year-old Pamela Ross, said he did get angry sometimes and did not engage in small talk.

The couple had one son together before divorcing in 2000 and Dear took custody of the boy who is now 25. Dear raised his son in North Carolina, where he taught him to hunt.

Before their divorce, Dear was an independent art dealer and earned a degree in public administration from a Midwestern college, Ross told the Times.

Ross was born in Charleston and grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, and his father was a graduate of Charleston's famous public military college, Citadel.

The younger Dear was raised Baptist, Ross told the New York Times. She said he was not a regular church goer, but he was religious.

'He believed wholeheartedly in the Bible,' she said, adding that he was never fixated on the book.

'That's what he always said, he read it cover to cover to cover.'

Dear was generally conservative and kept guns in his home for personal protection and hunting, but he was not obsessed with politics, Ross said.
She said that Dear believed abortion was wrong, but 'it was never really a topic of discussion'.

Ross said Dear exercised, ate healthily, rode motorcycles and listened to rock music and it 'never crossed her mind' that he would be capable of a mass shooting.

Dear moved from North Carolina to Colorado and set up home in an area where people 'like to be by themselves' about a year ago, locals told Daily Mail Online.

But he never gave any hint of any political views when he ate his meals at the only cafe in the isolated town of Hartsel, eight miles from his remote cabin.

Van Wands, 58, was a neighbor of Dear, and said that the suspected gunman 'preferred to be left alone'.

Dear is due to be arraigned on Monday over the deaths of three people at the Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs.

The divorcee seems to have retreated from society after his divorce.

An online advert posted under Dear's pseudonym after the split asked for bondage and sadomasochistic sex and company to smoke marijuana.

Ross said that on Saturday morning Dear's photo on television looked much more haggard and that 'something must have happened to him'.

Dear is accused of murdering 44-year-old six-year police veteran and part-time pastor Garrett Swasey and two civilians who have yet to be named.

The murders prompted President Barack Obama to once again push for more gun control. Dear was reported to have had an assault rifle, possibly an AK-47.

It remains unclear if the Planned Parenthood murders were linked to undercover videos showing its staff discussing the sale of aborted fetuses' body parts.

The organization claimed the videos had fueled 'domestic terrorism'.

Sources told NBC that nothing apparent, such a felony conviction or mental illness, would have disqualified him from purchasing an AK-47 style rifle.

But public records from South Carolina show that he was charged with cruelty to animals for an incident where he shot a dog and was also charged with being a peeping Tom, eavesdropping or peeping in 2002 for an incident after 'making unwanted advancements' towards a woman and being seen in the bushes by her house.

He was found not guilty of the first charge and the second was dismissed, though a restraining order was issued in the case.

In 1997 Ross also called police for a domestic violence evidence where she says he locked her out of their house and pushed her out a window when she entered.

    She did not press charges.

Though Dear's motive remains unclear, officials claim that the suspect ranted about abortion and politics after the shooting.

Dear reportedly made statements to law enforcement officers about President Barack Obama and comments such as 'no more baby parts' in reference to Planned Parenthood.

Planned Parenthood Rocky Mountains president and CEO Vicki Cowart said: 'Our top priority is the safety of our patients and staff.

'Our hearts go out to everyone involved in this tragic situation. Planned Parenthood has strong security measures in place, works closely with law enforcement agencies, and has a very strong safety record.

'We don't yet know the full circumstances and motives behind this criminal action, and we don't yet know if Planned Parenthood was in fact the target of this attack. We share the concerns of many Americans that extremists are creating a poisonous environment that feeds domestic terrorism in this country.

'We will never back away from providing care in a safe, supportive environment that millions of people rely on and trust.'

Officers are looking into Dear's background to see if the 'baby parts' comment, which was said during questioning, played a role in the suspected gunman's decision to target the clinic.

It remains unclear if the Planned Parenthood murders were linked to undercover videos showing its staff discussing the sale of aborted fetuses' body parts.

Dear arrived in Colorado a year ago, locals told Daily Mail Online, and lived a similar life.

'He was very quiet,' said Jamie Heffelman, who works at the town's only cafe, the Highline Cafe and Saloon, where Dear was a regular.

'He never interacted with anyone. He would just come in here, eat and drink, and never caused any problems.

'He would just order his food and kept to himself. He was very pleasant.

She added: 'He never spoke about politics or anything like that.

'A lot of people come here to be left alone - you can live for years around here and no one will notice.'

Another local, Charlie Buher, added: 'Nobody really knew him. The kind of guys who live up here, they like to be by themselves.'

He was listed as unaffiliated on a voter registration for Colorado in 2014.

Dear also had a home in Hartsel, Colorado, about a one hour and 20 minutes drive from the Planned Parenthood in Colorado Springs, the nearest major city.

Neighbors said that they didn't know Dear very well.

Zigmond Post, who lives about half a mile from Dear's cabin, said he had only met him a few times, but had a brief conversation about politics when his dogs got loose on Der's property.

When he went to retrieve the dogs, Dear handed him political pamphlets that criticized President Barack Obama. They did not have any anti-abortion messages or racist overtones.

'He gave us these pamphlets and said, "Hey, if you ever want to talk about this stuff, look this over",' Post told the New York Times. 'I think we threw them into the campfire that night.'

Attorney General Loretta E Lynch said in a statement that Friday's shooting was 'not only a crime against the Colorado Springs community, but a crime against women receiving health care services at Planned Parenthood, law enforcement seeking to protect and serve, and other innocent people'.

She added: 'It was also an assault on the rule of law, and an attack on all Americans' right to safety and security'.

Senior Justice Department officials are looking into whether to move forward with a federal case.

Colorado Springs mayor John Suthers said that people could make 'inferences from where it took place' when looking for a possible motive behind the shooting.

Five police officers and four civilians were among those injured in the attack.

Suthers said authorities were able to monitor Dear's movements in real time using security cameras inside the facility.

He said that watching the situation was 'incredibly dramatic' and that for the last hour Dear was stationary in one spot of the clinic.

Those inside the clinic hid in different rooms as they fled from the gunmen, and police rammed the building with a truck, enabling some inside to escape.

Some of those who survived the shooting have begun to tell their stories

One man whose windshield was shattered by gunfire said he was able to drive away after he saw the assailant's 'cold stone face'.

Ozy Licano, 61, who lives 85 miles southeast of Colorado Springs, had dropped friends off at the clinic, and he tried to run when he saw the shooter.

'He just started shooting up the entryway... I saw him shoot up and down,' Licano told CNN.

'I kinda lost it there... I tried to get out of my car and run.'

He said that he caught Dear's eyes for five seconds after he got back in his car and tried to drive away.

'He was looking directly at my face; he was aiming at my head. I could see it in his eyes... cold stone face.'

Bullets destroyed Licano's windshield, though he was not directly hit but was treated for wounds from the shattered glass.

Dear, who was described as wearing a trench coat and hunting cap while carrying a long gun, was arrested after hours of a standoff and shootout with police.

His surrender and apprehension came five hours after the first 911 calls shortly before noon.

The mayor said Friday evening: 'We mourn the loss of two civilian victims, we mourn the loss of a very brave police officer.' He added that there was 'no continuing peril to the citizens of Colorado Springs'.

Swasey was a six-year veteran of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs police force and a married father-of-two.

Suthers said that there was a 'huge crime scene' and that it would take time to identify all the victims.

Vicki Cowart, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, said: 'We're still reaching out to confirm individuals, how they are. I believe no one of our staff was severely injured. I also believe at this time that none of our patients were injured.'

President Barack Obama was briefed about the situation as it was happening and released a statement on Saturday.

'The last thing Americans should have to do, over the holidays or any day, is comfort the families of people killed by gun violence - people who woke up in the morning and bid their loved ones goodbye with no idea it would be for the last time,' the statement said.

'And yet, two days after Thanksgiving, that's what we are forced to do again.'

He said 'we can't let it become normal' and added that 'we have to do something about the easy accessibility of weapons of war on our streets to people who have no business wielding them'.

Obama's statement said that authorities do not know the motive for the shooting, but 'we know that more Americans and their families had fear forced upon them'.

The officer who was shot dead traveled to the scene in response to a report that an officer was under fire and in need of support.
