One step closer to new Phoenix-Las Vegas interstate

An interstate highway connecting Phoenix and Las Vegas took another step forward Thursday when the U.S. Senate approved a transportation bill designating the project as a high priority, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Interstate 11 would start in Nogales and extend through Tucson, Phoenix, Las Vegas and Reno, as outlined in the Fixing America's Surface Transportation Act approved by Congress.

The federal highway would follow U.S. 93 through Wickenburg en route to Las Vegas, presumably giving Valley residents a quicker, safer trip. From there, Interstate 11 would push north to Reno and connect with Interstate 80, which runs between Sacramento and Salt Lake City.

The original plan for Interstate 11, revealed in 2012, was to create a faster route from Phoenix to Las Vegas. Now, the expanded plan stretches from the southern border of Arizona to the northern border, ADOT spokeswoman Laura Douglas said.

ADOT is beginning work on an environmental-impact study covering the area between Nogales and Wickenburg.

At the end of the three-year study, officials will choose a preferred corridor alignment, along with a preferred mode of transportation for accommodating future traffic needs from Nogales to Wickenburg, according to an ADOT news release.

"Interstate 11 is part of Arizona’s Key Commerce Corridors plan that connects our state to regional and international markets while opening up new opportunities for mobility, job growth and economic competitiveness,” ADOT Director John Halikowski said.

The 16-mile addition called the Sonoran Corridor near the Arizona-Mexico border is expected to decrease truck-driving times and will be located within a planned aerospace, defense and technology research park, according to an ADOT news release.

There are corridor studies underway to examine the viability of extending the Interstate north from Las Vegas to the Canadian border.[3]

ADOT commits $150M to Vegas-Phoenix highway, looking toward I-11 project

    Sam Radwany 2:35 PM, Sep 5, 2018

    ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

TUCSON, Ariz. - There's new progress in the long-promised interstate highway between two of the largest cities in the western U.S.

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is committing $150 million to U.S. Route 93 improvements over the next five years. That comes on top of the more than half-billion dollars the department says it invested in the Interstate 11 project, which aims to connect Las Vegas and Phoenix with a four-lane, divided highway.

ADOT says Phoenix and Las Vegas are the two largest cities in the country not yet connected by an interstate freeway. U.S. 93, which currently connects Wickenburg, Arizona, with Las Vegas is already a four-lane, divided highway for all but 39 miles of the 200-mile route, the department says.
