Is NASA Affiliated With a Study That Says Aliens Could Invade to Save Earth From Global Warming?

There’s a study making headlines that basically says we need to put an end to global warming — or else eco-conscious aliens might attack and kill us all to save the planet.
But what’s causing so much fuss is not the report itself, it’s that one of the authors happens to be a NASA scientist:

“Aliens Could Attack to End Global Warming, NASA Says”; “NASA Warns of Alien Attack Scenario”; “Global Warming Could Prompt Alien Attack: NASA” — such was a sample of Friday morning headlines after it was first reported by the Guardian.
NASA quickly took to its Twitter account, writing two posts to clarify that the report was not an official NASA study:
In an online post, author Shawn Domagal-Goldman of NASA’s Planetary Science Division said the report was not funded or supported by NASA in anyway, and in fact was “just a fun paper written by a few friends, one of whom happens to have a NASA affiliation.”
Domagal-Goldman went on to say he considers the likelihood of contact with an alien civilization to be low, but did address the global warming connection:

One of the scenarios we considered in the review was the possibility that an alien civilization would contact us because they were concerned about the exponential growth of our civilization, as evidenced by climate change. This isn’t an entirely new idea; remember, this was a review effort. Indeed, Keanu Reaves recently played a similar alien in the movie “The Day the Earth Stood Still.” There were lots of other ideas we reviewed, but this was probably the most provocative.

So what did the study actually say?
For one thing, if aliens exist, all our greenhouse gas emissions could give us away as an “advanced” species and make us seem like potential “Avatar”-style invaders, leading extraterrestrial life to launch a preemptive strike against us.

Or, if they’re ecologically-minded, they could observe our “destructive tendencies” and see a need to step in and “wipe humanity out in order to preserve the Earth system as a whole.”

To avoid such negative possibilities, the authors recommend limiting our growth and immediately lessening our impact on global ecosystems to avoid giving off the appearance of a “rapidly expansive civilization”:

It would be particularly important for us to limit our emissions of greenhouse gases, since atmospheric composition can be observed from other planets. We acknowledge that the pursuit of emissions reductions and other ecological projects may have much stronger justifications than those that derive from [extraterrestrial intelligence] encounter, but that does not render ETI encounter scenarios insignificant or irrelevant.

Still, an alien encounter might not be all bad. The paper categorizes the potential outcomes three ways: beneficial, neutral and harmful.

A neutral outcome would be if the aliens were to have no desire to communicate, observing us without making contact, or were only a “mild nuisance.”

In a beneficial outcome, aliens could help us solve global problems like poverty or hunger. Of course, another way to reach a “beneficial outcome” would be if humans were to fight and overcome them.

But in a harmful outcome, such as the global warming retribution scenario, the aliens could eat, enslave or attack us, or spread their alien diseases around and make us sick.

That’s not to say that there isn’t a serious threat from aliens. The one in the White House has already caused an enormous amount of harm. But I don’t think curbing our carbon will make him go back to his planet.

Here Comes the Death Star

Can Man-Made Global Warming—also known as “Climate Change,” when the weather is cold—be saved?

It could have been so fine. Here, at long last, was the magic incantation for controlling people’s lives. Here was the formula by which a gang of nasty little nerds could take away your car, turn off your air conditioner, confiscate your light bulbs, restrict you to one sheet of toilet paper per visit to the john, raise your taxes as high as they pleased, and do virtually anything else they could ever think of doing to you—and all in the name of a noble cause: to save the planet.

And then the wheels fell off the juggernaut. The “Climategate” scandal, in which thousands of confidential emails were leaked to European newspapers, exposed the alleged scientists as liars, finaglers, plotters, and frauds.But they haven’t given up! They’ll gobble up our money and our freedoms if it’s the last thing they ever do.

To that end, Al Gore declares that “climate change deniers”—implying that no one but a wicked idiot could ever have any doubts about his apocalyptic spook story—are “like racists,” and should be treated like racists. Chimed in The Democrat Examiner (Aug. 28), “[D]o climate change deniers need to be socially ostracized and marginalized in order to illustrate their moral and intellectual failure concerning the environment?”

Of course, they’ve been doing that all along. Everyone who refuses to bow down to the idol that the nerds have made is branded “anti-Science” by the trained-seal “news” media.

But just calling names will only get them so far. After all, the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN)—they built that giant particle accelerator in Switzerland—now says that climate change is caused not by SUVs or toilet paper, but by the sun and cosmic rays. CERN has known this for years, but held back from releasing its findings due to political pressure from the Global Warming mob. (See “The Other Climate Theory,” Sept. 7, by Anne Jolis of The Wall Street Journal, in online.wsj.com/) They can hardly accuse CERN of being a Red State anti-Science ignoramus.

Enter NASA. NASA may not be able to put a man on the moon anymore, but by gum, they’ll go to bat for Man-Made Global Warming.

In a paper entitled “Would Contact with Extraterrestrials Benefit or Harm Humanity? A Scenario Analysis,” NASA nebbish Shawn Domagal-Goldman discusses how space aliens might home in on our carbon footprint. (You can read the whole paper here) Let us quote directly from Section 5 of the paper.

“Humanity may just now be entering the period in which rapid civilizational expansion could be detected by an ETI [Extraterrestrial Intelligence] because our expansion is changing the composition of Earth’s atmosphere (e.g. via greenhouse gas emissions), which therefore changes the spectral signature of Earth… it should at a minimum give us pause as we evaluate our expansive tendencies.” (And all you smart-mouths at CERN please just shut up!)

He goes on, “If one’s goal is to maximize ecosystem flourishing, then perhaps it would be better if humanity did not exist, or at least if it existed in a significantly reduced form…”

Are you getting this? Is anybody out there willing to help maximize the ecosystem by committing suicide? Don’t all volunteer at once.

And then, “Given that we have already altered our environment in ways that may be viewed as unethical by universalist ETI”—Klaatu barada nikto!—“it may be prudent to avoid sending any message that shows evidence of our negative environmental impact.” If we lie low and live like 12th-century Scottish peasants, the aliens might overlook us. “The chemical composition of Earth’s atmosphere over recent time may be a poor choice for a message because it would show a rapid accumulation of carbon dioxide. Likewise any message that indicates of widespread loss of biodiversity or rapid rates of expansion may be dangerous if received by such universalist ETI.” Here they come to avenge the five-spotted burping newt!

Finally, “advanced ETI may already know about our rapid environmental impact by listening to leaked electronic signals…”

Here we come to rest on very familiar ground. In how many old black-and-white science fiction movies have you seen this exchange? Terrified Earthman: “But how is it that you speak our language?” Scary Bug-eyed Space Alien: “For many years we have monitored your radio and television transmissions.”

Wow! Wait’ll the ETs find out that Jerry Lewis was dumped from the Labor Day telethon. They’ll send the Death Star after us.

But there you have it, straight from the horse’s… er, mouth. You’d better all be good little Greenie serfs like we tell you to, or else the Galactic Empire’s gonna come and zap you.If that doesn’t make a Climate Change believer out of you, I don’t know what will.

Will the Aliens Be Nice? Dont Bet On It

The Stone is featuring occasional posts by Gary Gutting, a professor of philosophy at the University of Notre Dame, that apply critical thinking to information and events that have appeared in the news.

The probability that there is intelligent life somewhere other than earth increases as we discover more and more solar systems that seem capable of sustaining life. The thought that there might be extraterrestrial intelligences (ETI) somewhere out there excites us and has led to organized efforts to contact any such beings. We have sent space probes with data about us, and we transmit signals with a structured content (like symbols expressing mathematical formulae) to what we hope will be an intergalactic audience. The search for extraterrestrial intelligence project (SETI) is obviously based on the assumption that the possible benefits of contact with ETI outweigh the possible harms. But do they?

A recent study by researchers at Penn State and NASA provides a useful outline of the various ways that encounters with ETI could be beneficial, neutral or harmful to us. The study faces up to the most chilling possibilities: ETI might “eat us, enslave us, attack us,” inadvertently infect us with horrible diseases or just decide to eliminate us for the greater good of the universe. (Regarding this last point, the report is especially concerned that ETI might be at least metaphorically green and see us a threat to the universe’s ecology.)

The report draws no conclusions about the wisdom of pursuing SETI, though it does urge the need to develop quantitative measures of possible harms and benefits. Its final sentence seems content with the idea that we will “continue the search for extraterrestrials into the future.” Especially after reading the report, I am not so content.
What is likely to happen if we make contact with ETI? Given the size of astronomical distances and assuming the speed of light as the maximum possible velocity, the most likely outcome is not real contact but merely an exchange of messages, perhaps at very long intervals. Little chance of harm there.

But there is still non-zero probability of real contact. Since we have no way of predicting with any certainty the outcome of such contact, it might seem that we have no reason to assume a bad rather than a good result. From this we might conclude that there is no objection to pursuing SETI, if only to satisfy our curiosity.

But we do know this: for the foreseeable future, contact with ETI would have to result from their coming here, which would in all likelihood mean that they far surpassed us technologically. They would be able to enslave us, hunt us as prey, torture us as objects of scientific experiments, or even exterminate us and leave no trace of our civilization. They would, in other words, be able to treat us as we treat animals — or as our technologically more advanced societies have often treated less advanced ones.

This suggests an argument against SETI that is the reverse of Pascal’s famous wager argument for believing in God. Pascal’s idea was that even a small probability of bringing about an enormous good (without risking unacceptable evil) was good reason for acting. This is a reasonable principle: even a small prospect of enormous good can swamp the prospect of more probable but much lesser goods. Pascal’s argument runs into trouble not because of this principle but because of worries about, for example, which God we ought to believe in. (There is also, as William James pointed out, the disconcerting possibility that God might be particularly ill-disposed to people who believe in him through the calculating reasoning of the wager argument.)

The swamping principle also applies to a small possibility of an enormous evil, which can provide a good reason for not acting. This would seem to be the case with ETI. Since there’s at least a small (and perhaps a not so small) probability that they will bring us catastrophic evil, why should we risk such an outcome?

One reason might be that ETI could instead bring us enormous benefits: they might even lead us to a paradise of peace, wisdom and joy. But there is no reason to think that such a paradise is more probable than a hell of slavery or extermination. And enormous gains are not worth the equal risk of horrendous loss. Who would take a bet that promised, at equal odds, either a lifetime of unalloyed happiness or a lifetime of utter misery? Better to stick with the likelihood of a normal human life, mixed with joy and sorrow.

Another possible reason is that ETI might in fact save us from horrors equal to the worst they might inflict on us. If the probability of their saving us were equal to or greater than of their destroying us, then the bet of making contact might well be worth it. Here the most plausible suggestion is that, without intervention from powerful and good ETI, we are likely to destroy ourselves through nuclear war. But there is a failure of imagination in thinking that nuclear annihilation is as bad as the worse that ETI might do to us. They might, for example, give us each thousands of years of excruciatingly painful existence as their slaves. This might not even be due to moral perversity; they might be so beyond us that they were incapable of recognizing us as objects of moral concern.

We cannot know what might happen to us from contact with ETI. But we do know that there may well be unthinkably horrible outcomes that are not likely to be offset by potential benefits. We should not take the SETI bet.

It seems that in light of things like this, especially the recent media coverage claiming that we'll be invaded and killed by aliens because of global warming, that we have a problem. Werner Von Braun said before he died that first it would be rogue nations that would threaten the world after the Cold War, then it would be Terrorism, and then an extra terrestrial threat, mainly so that they can weaponize space. (FEDERALJACK) A few months ago I made a video and posted it here on FJ about the government, media and their mouth pieces hyping an alien invasion titled Michio Kaku Hyping Alien Invasion As Corporate Media Says Alien Threat Would Help Global Governance. It shows how the corporate controlled media and the government are hyping an outside threat of alien invasion and using that “threat” as a way to push the idea of a global government. This is the exact script of the movie Independence Day and the real blueprint of something called Project Blue Beam and you are seeing the foundation laid for it. Even Paul Krugman said back on August 14th 2011 that the government should fake an alien invasion to fix the economy. So with those recent pieces of evidence in mind let’s now pay attention to a mainstream news report put out on Easter Sunday 2012 in Australia. A member of the U.S. Air Command with special clearance of White House, spoke during an interview aired on Australian MSM, about the official plans of the U.S. military to fight a hostile alien invasion.

Ask yourself, why all the hype about an alien invasion? Then pay attention to the things they are saying are the goals and it becomes clear, WORLD GOVERNMENT. Now I’m not saying I don’t believe aliens are out there, that would be an ignorant and arrogant stance to take considering the size of the universe. If they are out there they would be so advanced that to them we would be like the monkeys in the zoo who fling poop at each other. To them the Earth is probably a neat place to visit from afar but they must be careful not to get too close too often because the natives are primitive and dangerous. I also agree that working together as humankind to explore space and the oceans would be great. I agree that no more war, death, bloodshed would be great but that is not what the people pulling the strings want. They want quite the opposite. Their goal is a one world government that has the ability, power, and means to control everything on the planet and every aspect of human life for their own twisted goals. I know this all sounds crazy but it is 100% real as can be. Do the research for yourself and you will see.

And remember what Henry Kissinger said while speaking at the Bilderberg meeting in Evian, France, May 21, 1992:

“Today Americans would be outraged if U.N. troops entered Los Angeles to restore order; tomorrow they will be grateful. This is especially true if they were told there was an outside threat from beyond, whether real or promulgated, that threatened our very existence.
