RFID protestors.

Over 6.000 students have been targeted as guinea pigs for a RFID tracking system.
In just a few days, two schools in San Antonio, Texas, are planning to begin tracking and monitoring over 6,000 students using RFID microchipped cards. Unless Jay High School and Jones Middle School school boards rethink their plans, students will be required to participate in the technology trial beginning August 27.
Students, parents, teachers, staff, and people from across the nation believe that this action is establishing a dangerous precedent and have set up a facebook page objecting to the RFID chips HERE. In their view RFID tracking violates expectations of reasonable privacy and threatens civil liberties in our schools. Read their draft position paper.
RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is a controversial technology that uses tiny microchips to track items from a distance. These RFID microchips have earned the nickname “spychips” because each contains a unique identification number, like a Social Security number for things, that can be read silently and invisibly by radio waves. Over 40 of the world’s leading privacy and civil liberties organizations have called for a moratorium on chipping items like ID cards because the technology can be used to track people without their knowledge or consent.

Many parents and teachers that oppose RFID tracking believe it violates expectations of reasonable privacy and threatens civil liberties in our schools.

Update:

Judy Messer greetings! remember this school has been targeted for the reason that the community is very heavy on English as their second language and so fewer parents from the school are in the loop. This is why this invasion of privacy is so severe, the more vulnerable are being targeted. i didn’t have the opportunity to attend from austin but plan to be there on monday to show support
