The Delegate Race: Arizona and Michigan, and "Brokered" vs. "Open" Conventions

Submitted by Steve Dickson on Mon, 02/27/2012 - 12:25

Tuesday, February 28th marks the next phase in the GOP election process, with the primaries in Arizona and Michigan. It is becoming clear to many that the likelihood of an open convention is increasing. A "brokered" convention and an "open" convention are two very different things, and this has been miss-reported by the major media. Of note is that both of these states will pay a penalty of half of their Delegates due to the date of their elections. First, on to Arizona!

Arizona has 29 Delegates available after the penalty for holding their primary early. This is a closed primary. It is unclear as to the final method of compliance with RNC rules (a state holding a primary before April 1st is required to award Delegates proportionally) but as it stands, all 29 Delegates go to the popular vote winner, and are bound for the 1st ballot at the National Convention. Here is the official Arizona Republican Party Bylaws.

Michigan losses half of their Delegates due to the date of their primary. They will award 30 Delegates proportionally based on the following formula: 28 Delegates come from the 14 Congressional Districts (2 per District) and are awarded to whoever gets the most votes in that District. The remaining 2 Delegates are "State" Delegates and are awarded proportionally, with a threshold of 15% to be eligible (which means that the party is trying to skirt the proportional rule and be a winner take all state). All 30 Delegates are bound for the 1st ballot at the National Convention.

An issue that needs to be addressed is the growing concern there will be a "brokered" convention in Tampa. This is not possible - and is an attempt to create confusion and control the process of selecting the nominee. A "brokered" convention would be like this: during the 1st ballot (where each State is called on by the Chair) no candidate receives a majority. The candidates and other powerful party types then get together and make deals to come up with a nominee, and the candidate pledges his Delegates to someone else to achieve a majority. So, for example, Jon Huntsman received 2 Delegates in New Hampshire, and he could pledge those to Mitt Romney, giving Romney 2 more Delegates to get to a majority. Except, he can't. It no longer works that way. His 2 Delegates are now "unbound" and may vote their conscience.

From Michigan's rules on Delegates (via The Green Papers): Delegate binding: Delegates are bound to their Presidential preference from the start of the nominating process through the end of the first ballot at the Republican National Convention. Delegates may not amend their Preference unless released from that commitment.

Delegates become officially uncommitted if their Presidential candidate is either not allocated delegates or looses his/her delegates.

Presidential candidates may not be allocated National Convention delegates if they withdraw, suspend their campaign, endorse another Presidential candidate, or seek the nomination of another political party for any political office.

Most states have similar rules, but it is different for each one, so check your state or keep checking here. What this means is that after the first ballot, Michigan Delegates are officially and legally UNBOUND. Some states (Maine with 24 Delegates, for example) are unbound from the start.
Instead of a Brokered Convention which is no longer possible by GOP rules, if no candidate on the 1st ballot gets a majority we will have an OPEN convention. Each Delegate will then be legally able to vote their conscience, based on the rules from their states.
The Establishment fears an Open Convention more than anything, for it means the actual Delegates will chose instead of politicians, the media, or back room power brokers. The Convention can then nominate ANYONE, whether they have been a candidate or not up to that point, or they can unite behind one of the current candidates. It will certainly be an interesting convention!

    Message to my Grandparents

    Mon, 02/27/2012 - 15:34

And extended family. Feel free to copy it and use to write to your own family members.
    -----

    Dear Grandma & Grandpa,

Sorry to email you about politics, but it's something, as a veteran, that I feel very strongly about.

I was at a President's Day rally in D.C. last Monday, showing veteran support for Dr. Ron Paul for President. There were over 400 active duty soldiers and veterans (w/papers to prove it), and about 1000 other supporters. At 2pm, we soldiers made a mass formation and marched from the Washington Monument to the White House. We then symbolically turned our backs on the White House, and rendered a salute lasting one second for every soldier who has committed suicide since Obama became President. It lasted more than 8 minutes. We then had a moment of silent prayer, one second for all the other soldiers who died in combat since Obama became President. It lasted 21 minutes. This is not including troops who have lost limbs or suffered other wounds.

I am telling you this because I know the mainstream media did not cover, nor will they ever report, this event. They will not tell you that Ron Paul gets more financial support from active duty military than all the other candidates, Republicans and Obama, COMBINED. It is in light that I share with you a video that sums up perfectly what has been going on for some time--that the media is actively working to suppress the fact that the troops are overwhelmingly against these wars, including a war with Iran, and overwhelmingly support Dr. Ron Paul for President.

That wasn't the only thing cut out. One audience member later wrote:
"[John Bolton also told the veteran:] 'You'll have to answer to your higher power.' I attended this taping; they cut out this comment that was made towards that vet. I believe Bolton also stated that the vet should have been tried and convicted in court. The audience was furious. My friend sitting next to me stood up and walked out after these comments and the rest of the audience was stunned (mixed boo's/awkward silence/whispers). 'Did he actually just say that?'"

I only ask that you take a moment to seriously consider voting for Ron Paul in the coming caucuses. He is #2 in delegates right now but he needs to win a presidential preference poll in order to break through the media black-out. His first win may be in Washington. In order to understand what we're fighting against, I recommend you watch this short video about "Neoconservatives". (6 minutes)

Here is a video from the campaign, for people who like Ron Paul but are afraid of his foreign policy. (14 minutes)

If you haven't been following the debates and want a quick introduction to the four candidates, I highly recommend watching the CNN Arizona debate that occurred a few days ago. (1hr, 45 mins)

Please write back with any questions or hangups you have about Dr. Paul. I'm sure I can convince you if you give me a chance!

    Love,
    Doug

    Secret Service Protection

    Submitted by cevans93 on Mon, 02/27/2012 - 19:04

So now that Romney has Secret Service protection, and Santorum's campaign announcing today that they will begin receiving protection, will Ron Paul receive Secret Service protection as his rallies continue to get bigger?

Ron Paul's anti-war message resonates with East Lansing crowd

    5:00 PM, February 27, 2012

EAST LANSING – Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul spoke to a fired-up crowd of young people at Michigan State University on Monday afternoon, drawing a standing ovation and chants of “President Paul” for his anti-war and pro-liberty message.
The MSU Auditorium seats 4,000 people. Nearly every seat was filled and many students who arrived late sat in the stairs.

Paul promised to slash $1 trillion from the federal budget in his first year if elected president, mainly by targeting money spent overseas. He complained President Barack Obama has followed the tradition of other presidents in the last 50 years by fighting wars without a declaration of war by lawmakers.
“I will not go to war without a proper directive from the people and the U.S. Congress,” the Texas congressman said to a standing ovation.
Paul also attacked the government’s war on drugs as wasteful and intrusive on personal liberties.
That message also brought loud cheers, though, Paul, a physician, made clear: “All drugs are dangerous,” including prescription drugs.
“The war on drugs, I think, is more dangerous than the drugs themselves.”
Paul’s speech in East Lansing came on the eve of Tuesday’s Michigan Primary, with most polls showing Paul with support in the state at or below the low single digits, far behind frontrunners Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum.
Still, Paul supporters said they are hopeful he can either win outright or secure delegates by winning the most votes in one or more of Michigan’s congressional districts.
Ethan Davis, chairman of MSU Youth for Paul, said the congressman’s “consistency … speaks for his integrity.”
“He’s the only one with the army of young supporters needed to win.”
But even some of the students who stood and applauded loudly for Paul said afterward they aren’t sure he’ll get their vote.
Stevin Jones, a 19-year-old Lansing Community College student, said he likes Paul’s emphasis on individual liberties but went to the event as a way of helping decide whom to support.
“A lot of it makes sense,” Jones said of Paul’s message, but he remained undecided.
Suni Roberts, 22, a senior in astrophysics at MSU, attended the rally carrying a pro-choice placard. Paul is pro-life.
Of the Republicans in the race, “I definitely think Ron Paul is the best,” but wanted to make sure the pro-choice view was represented at the rally, Roberts said.
Cathy Ross, a health care worker who came from Owosso to hear Paul, said “bringing our troops back home,” is one of the strongest elements of Paul’s message for her.
Terry Ott, an Owosso bar owner who accompanied Ross, said he would welcome Paul’s promise of freedom from government red tape and excess taxation.
“You should be able to do what you want to do with your business,” Ott said.
“Let’s take a right turn and let’s see what happens.”

    Hundreds Turned Away in Dearborn

    Michigan

Just got back from the Dearborn event where due to the maximum capacity crowd, hundreds of us were turned away... what a difference from the last campaign. So many new faces, every kind of person you could imagine though mostly young. I heard so many kids talking about how they couldn't wait to see him in person, I really did feel sorry for them but though disappointed they sure weren't disheartened. Can't wait to see the video of what happened inside.

Poll: Ron Paul Strongest Against Obama In Head To Head Matchup

Also named most truthful GOP candidate in separate study

    Steve Watson
    Infowars.com
    February 27, 2012

GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul is leading the incumbent president in a hypothetical matchup, according to a newly released poll from respected pollster Rasmussen.
Paul scores 43% over 41% for Obama in the poll, with 10% saying they would vote for some other option, a figure that includes 17% of Republicans.
Paul also picks up 15% of the vote from self-identified liberals, according to Rasmussen.
Mitt Romney is the only other candidate to lead Obama in the poll, scoring 45% to Obama’s 43%. Paul polls the strongest, however, given that he drives the president’s numbers down further than Romney.
A hypothetical Paul nomination also drives the undecided voters up significantly.
Senator Rick Santorum trails the president nationally by two percentage points, 45% to 43%. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich trails even further behind when pitted against Obama, with a ten point deficit, 49% to 39%.
Paul has regularly emerged as the strongest contender in other polls when matched head to head with Obama. This is the first time, however, that he has done so in a Rasmussen poll.

The poll shows a significant drop in approval ratings for Obama, who has seen a recent bounce in the polls throughout the first two months of the year.
Forty-two percent (42%) now Strongly Disapprove of the way that Obama is performing as president. His overall approval rating is down six points since mid February, according to Rasmussen.
In a separate study by The Houston Chronicle, Ron Paul was named the most truthful of the GOP contenders.
Ron Paul “had 58 percent accuracy from 33 statements that were evaluated on their honesty and truth.” The Chronicle’s ‘Texas on the Potomac’ blog explained. “Paul’s true and mostly true categories were the most plentiful, tied with seven statements in each.” the report continued.
The Chronicle used fact checking site PolitiFact to analyze statements from each of the candidates and assign accuracy values.
Ron Paul was also found to have had the lowest percentage of ‘half truths’, according to the study, with 18 percent. Newt Gingrich was found to be the most untruthful candidate, with just 42 accuracy points.
Over the weekend, Paul delivered a rousing keynote speech to hundreds of supporters in Michigan. Watch the speech in full below:
