Peter Schiff: 'Junk' US Treasurys, Dollar Headed for Collapse

Both the U.S. Treasury bond and the dollar are headed for collapse thanks to the Federal Reserve's policy of keeping interest rates near zero for years, says Peter Schiff, CEO of Euro Pacific Capital.

"As far as I am concerned, U.S. Treasurys are junk bonds," Schiff tells CNBC.

"And the only reason that the U.S. government can pay the interest on the debt, and I say 'pay' in quotes because we never pay our bills. We borrow the money so we pretend to pay, but the only reason we can do it is because the Fed has got interest rates so artificially low."

To further ensure long-term interest rates stay low and the economy awash in liquidity, the Fed has spent the last few years snapping up bonds held by banks, an extraordinary policy tool known as quantitative easing (QE) that weakens the dollar as a trade off for recovery.

While high-ranking Fed officials say the economy needs no more easing, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke has said he can't rule it out as the labor market remains weak.

"Unfortunately, we are going to get more QE than Rocky movies, because the only thing keeping this phony economy going is this QE,” Schiff says.

"And the minute you take it away, it’s going to collapse."

Several high-ranking Fed officials oppose further quantitative easing, pointing out past rounds of easing, which injected $2.3 trillion into the economy, have run their course while a new round would threaten to pump up inflation rates.

"With the very accommodative stance of monetary policy that has now been in place for more than three years, we must guard against the medium- and longer-term risks of inflation," says Philadelphia Fed President Charles Plosser, according to Bloomberg.

Instead of stimulating the economy, the Fed may have to hike interest rates "well before" the end of 2014 "in the absence of some shock that derails the recovery."

The Fed has officially said conditions meriting today's low interest rates will likely stick around through 2014.

Mitt Romney may be the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, but Rep. Ron Paul of Texas is quietly racking up some organizational victories that could complicate Mr. Romney’s anticipated coronation at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., this summer.

Exploiting party rules, loyalists for the libertarian congressman from Texas in recent days have engineered post-primary organizing coups in states such as Louisiana and Alaska, confirming what party regulars say would be an effort to grab an outsized role in the convention and the party’s platform deliberations.

In Massachusetts, the state where Mr. Romney served as governor, Paul loyalists over the weekend helped block more than half of Mr. Romney’s preferred nominees from being named delegates at state party caucuses — even though Mr. Romney won his home state’s primary with 72 percent of the vote. Many state GOP establishment figures, including longtime state Republican National Committee member Ron Kaufman, won’t be going to Tampa in August as official delegates.

Mr. Paul, who is Mr. Romney’s only active challenger with the expected withdrawal Wednesday of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, “is doing more with less than any modern presidential campaign in recent memory,” said Doug Wead, a Paul campaign adviser who served as an aide to President George H.W. Bush.

“More surprises coming,” Mr. Wead, an evangelical Christian, blogged this week. “It means that Ron Paul will be a factor in Tampa.”

Forget the Nomination, Ron Paul Revolution Taking Over the Entire Republican Party

What little commentary we’ve seen from the media on Ron Paul’s silent coup presently underway in the Republican Party has focused mostly on its implications for the 2012 Republican Primary and whether Paul can hold back Romney’s delegate count just long enough to ensure a brokered convention, which is the only feasible scenario in which Paul could emerge as the party’s nominee.

But perhaps more important and far-reaching in its implications for the future of national politics in the US, is not Ron Paul’s delegate count, but the fact that his supporters are successfully taking over the Republican Party district by district, county by county, state by state. That the fiercely independent Republican congressman from Texas might still have a tiny chance at winning his party’s nomination, while interesting, is less important than what he will most certainly have succeeded at doing: Ron Paul has built a political machine.

Judging by recent events in state and local GOP conventions across the country, it may not be at all presumptuous for Ron Paul’s supporters to call their burgeoning movement a revolution.

RP censorship deep to tiniest level: Ron Paul quote obscured in elementary school yearbook

I never told this because it was so disappointing to me.

I submitted a photograph of my daughter with Ron Paul to the annual yearbook collection during her 5th grade year (2 years ago). The school was taking $$'s for an entry of your child's picture and some wording to go along. I paid the $$'s and awaited the printing.

When my daughter got home with the yearbook, I was crestfallen. The photograph was there but Ron Paul's quote was printed on such a dark background, the lettering can only be read when tilting the page into the light (scanning also brings the lettering to light, see scan).

None of the other children's background's were so dark you could not read the wording.

In some ways I felt screwed because I paid for the wording. Perhaps some may say this sort of thing is "too heavy" for the kids and I was dumb to do it anyway. Maybe, but I don't feel that way about it. If it was so, that the quote was offensive, why did they take my $$'s, why wouldn't they have just told me that they needed different wording?

I just wanted to share today because I felt moved to share this tiniest censorship with you in hopes that someone that is not believing "our conspiracy theories regarding RP censorship" will ask themselves how much farther you can go than to not care if you hurt an excited, proud elementary school child?

The scan looks great believe me, in person you simply cannot read the wording unless you tilt and trap the wording in a particular light. Besides the burying of Ron Paul's quote, also totally eliminated was the additional wording of "Ivy, it can never be said that you did nothing"....so it really hurt me as a Mother.

WASHINGTON -- Last fall, Jay Dardenne won more than half a million votes to be re-elected lieutenant governor of Louisiana. But last Saturday he only mustered 288 votes in the Republican Party caucuses, placing 51st in the competition for 25 delegate slots from the new Sixth Congressional District. He did finish 16 votes ahead of his wife Cathy.

Dardenne, who was backing former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for president, was not alone among the ranks of accomplished vote-getters who didn't get many votes in the caucuses. That helps explain why Ron Paul's forces carried the day, sweeping the delegate slots in four of the state's six new Congressional Districts and gaining at least 17 delegates to the Republican National Convention in Tampa in August.

While the Paul victory owed much to the dedication and passion of his supporters, it owed at least as much to the indifference of most Republicans, and the apparent lack of much effort on the part of important figures in the state GOP who know how to get people to the polls when it matters.

The top vote-getter in the caucuses was Paul delegate Bernard S. Smith, who received 922 votes in the First Congressional District. In the Sixth District, that honor fell on Karla Doucet with 743 votes. In the 2nd District, Amanda M. Roberts set the pace , but with only 240 vote. The top non-Paul delegate in the Second was former Rep. Anh "Joseph" Cao, who, with 205 votes, fell 21 votes shy of winning a trip to the June 2 state convention in Shreveport where the delegates to the national convention will be chosen. But Cao's anemic vote total was impressive compared to the 126 votes received by one-time GOP Senate candidate Woody Jenkins.

Another one-time Senate candidate, Suzane Terrell, received 683 votes in the First District, nipping at the heels of Jefferson Parish President John Young, a Romney supporter who, with 694 votes, fell 125 votes behind the lowest-polling Paul delegate in the district. But Young placed well ahead of S. Scott Sewell, who directed the Romney campaign in Louisiana and received 273 votes, and former Rep. Bob Livingston, a backer of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who amassed a meager 160 votes.

The ennui of the non-Paul forces may be understandable. Gingrich and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum are out of the race. Romney supporters figure his nomination is a fait accompli.

Only Ron Paul supporters were still driven by a sense of purpose and mission.

But Tony Perkins, who, with 683 votes in the Sixth District trailed 15 votes behind the lowest-ranking Paul delegate, should have seen it coming.

Perkins has, in recent years, become a national figure as head of the Christian conservative Family Research Council (he was mocked by Jon Stewart on "The Daily Show" this week for suggesting that a new ad campaign for the candy "Mike and Ike" had a pernicious gay subtext.) For the March 24 Louisiana primary, Perkins was among the figures guiding Santorum to a huge victory, winning nearly half the vote.

But last fall, much to Perkins' chagrin, it was Ron Paul who won the presidential straw poll at the FRC's Values Voter Summit. At the time, Perkins dismissed the result as simply a matter of Paul's ability to pack the house.

"I don't think Ron Paul is truly reflective of where value voters stand," said Perkins.

Ron Paul’s stealth state convention takeover

Remember Ron Paul?

He has yet to win a primary. All his other fellow long-shots have dropped out (or will by the end of the day). The Republican National Committee is calling former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney the “presumptive nominee.”

Yet at state conventions around the country, Paul supporters are increasing the candidate’s support by taking over state party committees and educating fellow Paul fans in arcane rules.

While at many conventions Romney backers are split between numerous would-be delegates, Paul supporters are showing up in droves and voting with discipline for a delegate slate.

With a plurality of delegates from five states, Paul supporters could nominate him from the convention floor — the goal of at least some Paul supporters.

A brokered convention is still unlikely. But a strong showing among delegates could help Paul score a speaking spot and some control over the party platform. 

Here’s the latest on Paul’s strength in state committees and conventions:

At Massachusetts’ state convention less than half of Romney’s 27 chosen delegates won tickets to Tampa. Paul supporters were chosen instead. While all of the state’s delegates are committed to vote for Romney, the delegates get to decide on the party chairman, platform, and VP nominee.

Paul backers in Alaska were elected as party chairman and co-chairman but failed to change the rules to give Paul the state’s 24 delegates. (He will get six.)

Paul supporters are a majority in the Iowa GOP’s State Central Committee, and he’s set to claim a majority of the state’s delegates despite finishing third in the caucuses.

They dominated the caucuses in Louisiana, carrying four out of six congressional districts with a tie in a fifth. That means 74 percent of the state’s convention delegates will be Paul backers.

In Minnesota, Paul won 20 of 24 delegates allocated at congressional district conventions, and he’s expected to take more at the statewide convention.

Paul supporters teamed up with backers of former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum in Colorado to get 13 delegates.

The candidate has also picked up small delegate gains in states where Romney won big — for example, five delegates in Pennsylvania and four in Rhode Island. 

Attempts to replicate these successes are taking place in other states across the country — for example, the upcoming state convention in Nevada.

“Taken together, these victories and those yet to happen forecast a prominent role for Ron Paul at the RNC,” Paul campaign manager John Tate said after the Colorado and Minnesota gains. “They also signal that the convention will feature a spirited discussion over whether conservatism will triumph over the status quo.”

Paul has only 80 delegates to Romney’s 847, according to an AP count. When all the various state conventions are over we’ll see how much support he’s gathered — and whether Romney should have paid more attention.

According to Green Papers, these county conventions will choose delegates for the May 18-19 State Convention in Detroit. The results of the 02/28 Michigan Primary entitled Sen. Santorum to 14 of Michigan's 30 National delegates; with Santorum's delegates likely to be free in Tampa, this is a golden opportunity to pick up 14 delegates for Dr. Paul!

I suspect that turnout at tomorrow's conventions will be very light, for the following reasons:

1. County Convention delegates were chosen way back in 2010; many of them have probably forgotten about, or are no longer interested in, attending, especially since Romney is commonly perceived to have already won the nomination.

2. The conventions are not being well publicized; I found that, as of yesterday, many of the Michigan county GOP Websites made no mention of their upcoming convention.

3. The conventions are being held on a Thursday, which is an unusual day for an electoral event.

What this means is this: A strong statewide turnout by Liberty county delegates can sweep these conventions and set the stage for us to dominate the State Convention. We beat Romney in Massachusetts last Saturday, now we can beat him in his other "home state"!

If you are a Michigan Liberty supporter who is not a county delegate, go to your County Convention anyway (from what I gather, they are open to the public). You will be able to help out and to provide a supportive environment for the Paul delegates. If are a Liberty supporter somewhere else, but know people in Michigan, call them! We need to alert the Paul community in Michigan that this important event is tomorrow.

Strategy: If you already have an agreed-upon plan of action, follow it. Otherwise, dress nicely, show up early, find the Paul crowd, get organized, and develop a slate that you all will vote on. (If there is no Paul crowd, try to get yourself elected as a State Convention delegate; prepare a short speech in furtherance of that goal.) If you are not a County delegate, help out in any way that you can.
