    Michael Savage (San Francisco Chronicle)

    Lawyers for Michael Savage sent a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton today, asking that she call on the British government to withdraw its ban on the top-rated radio talk host.

    The letter issued by the nonprofit Thomas More Law Center appeals to international conventions, arguing Savage is being punished "for what he says in the United States and not what he has said or intends to say in the United Kingdom."

    In the announcement of the ban May 5 by British Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, Savage, the letter notes, was listed among radical "Muslim clerics, convicted criminals and Russian skinheads.'"

    The letter, signed by Thomas More's president, Richard Thompson, also asks Clinton's State Department to find out how Savage's name ended up on the list.

    Thompson argues Savage's radio show is not broadcast in the U.K., and it's unlikely many British citizens had even heard of him.

    "It is extremely suspicious that the Home Secretary's office would select an American radio talk show host to place on their so called 'least wanted list,' when that individual has never taken steps to enter their country," Thompson writes.

    Don't be silent! Sign the petition to block government attacks on freedom of speech and freedom of the press.

    As WND reported last week, Smith explained the ban was necessary because it was "important that people understand the sorts of values and sorts of standards that we have here, the fact that it's a privilege to come. ..."

    Savage told WND, in response, he would consider legal action against the home secretary.

    "She said this is the kind of behavior we won't tolerate? She's linking me with mass murderers who are in prison for killing Jewish children on buses? For my speech? The country where the Magna Carta was created?'"

    Thompson points out the ban on Savage has caused a "political firestorm" in the U.K., with some British citizens claiming the move was made to "give political cover to the list that concerns mainly Muslims."

    Savage hosts the nation's third most popular radio talk show in the U.S., with an estimated 8 million listeners a week on about 400 stations.

    "He has been on the air for fifteen years and has never advocated violence," Thompson writes. "Nor have any of his comments ever instigated violence."

    International appeal

    Thompson appeals to Article 19, section 2 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which both the U.S. and U.K. have signed: "Everyone shall have the right to freedom of expression; this right shall include freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing or in print. …"

    In addition, he says, the ban violates Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which also establishes "the right of freedom of expression."

    Thompson, in conclusion, "respectfully demands" that Clinton and the State Department "take all necessary steps" to call on the U.K. and Home Secretary Smith to rescind the ban and asks that he be kept "informed of the steps you plan to take and are taking."

    'Fomenting hatred'

    In an interview with the BBC May 5, Smith said Savage is "someone who has fallen into the category of fomenting hatred, of such extreme views and expressing them in such a way that it is actually likely to cause inter-community tension or even violence if that person were allowed into the country."

    Savage told WND last week his message for Smith and the people of the U.K. was, "Shame on you. Shame that you've fallen to such a low level."

    "It's interesting to me that here I am a talk show host, who does not advocate violence, who advocates patriotic traditional values – borders, language, culture – who is now on a list banned in England," Savage said. "What does that say about the government of England? It says more about them than it says about me."

    The U.K. list also includes Hamas leader Yunis Al-Astal, former Ku Klux Klan grand wizard Stephen Donald Black, neo-Nazi Erich Gliebe and radical American pastor Fred Phelps, known for his virulent anti-gay protests at funerals. Phelps' daughter Shirley Phelps-Roper also is on the list.

    Smith said the British government believes the people on the list have views or attitudes that could provoke violence.

    "If people have so clearly overstepped the mark in terms of the way not just that they are talking but the sort of attitudes that they are expressing to the extent that we think that this is likely to cause or have the potential to cause violence or inter-community tension in this country, then actually I think the right thing is not to let them into the country in the first place. Not to open the stable door then try to close it later," she said.

    "It's a privilege to come to this country. There are certain behaviors that mean you forfeit that privilege."

    The others on the list are Jewish nationalist Mike Guzovsky; imprisoned Russian skinhead leaders Artur Ryno and Pavel Skachevsky; and Islamic leaders Wadgy Abd El Hamied Mohamed Ghoneim, Abdullah Qadri Al Ahdal, Safwat Hijazi , Amir Siddique, Abdul Ali Musa, Samir Al Quntar and Nasr Javed.

    Said Savage, "How can a nation put me on a list and leave hate preachers in England who say that we're going to kill all of you? We're going to convert all of you to Islam. How is it possible that those hate preachers can't be deported from Britain, but I can be banned from Britain? People who advocate actual murder cannot be deported from Britain.

    "How is it that liberalism has gotten so distorted and cowardly?"

    Poll: Americans oppose Brits' muzzle

    Britain's Home Secretary Jacqui Smith criminalized American free speech when she banned USA talk-radio host Michael Savage from entry into the United Kingdom.

    Silence from the Obama administration gave tacit approval to this British-ordered warning to those individuals who make a career of criticizing government policies and politicians.

    While key Obama officials were silent, a new Zogby International/O'Leary Report poll conducted May 8-12, 2009, of 4,238 voters shows that 46 percent of Americans disapprove of this action. Only 24 percent approved of the move.

    The Obama administration continues to divide Americans on the free speech issue. Obama's Democratic Party supports the ban 42 percent to 21 percent. Independents oppose the ban 49 percent compared to 18 percent. Republicans heavily opposed the ban 76 percent to 6 percent.

    Another key Obama constituency, liberals, supported the ban 43 percent to 19 percent.

    Washington elite's message to you: "Shut Up, America!" – Get Brad O'Leary's new book about the effort to muzzle talk radio

    Fifty percent of all whites, Hispanics and Asians are opposed to the ban while African Americans supported the ban 39 percent to 20 percent.

    Nearly 50 percent of Catholic, Protestants and Jewish voters opposed the ban.

    Home Secretary Jacqui Smith justified her ban on Savage by saying, "If you can't live by … the values that we live by, we should exclude you."

    What are the values that the voters in Great Britain live by that were attacked by the free speech of Michael Savage?

    * In England, criminals have the right to sue homeowners if the criminal is injured in the commission of a crime;

    * Gun ownership has been banned or restricted;

    * British women who are Muslim are denied protection of the British courts and must be prosecuted under Shariah law – a repressive form of Muslim justice recognized by the British legal system;

    * Christian ministers who try to preach from the Old or New Testament can be prosecuted for hate speech;

    * Small-business owners just saw their taxes raised by the government from 36 percent to 61 percent.

    I also oppose those laws, and therefore I will call the British Embassy to volunteer that my name also be placed on the list of people banned from entering the United Kingdom. If you care to join me, call the embassy at 202-588-6500.

    The Obama administration silence on the Labour Government's attack on the free speech of a talk-radio host registers approval. But his administration is speaking out in other ways that seem to support Britain's attack on free speech:

    * Five U.S. senators are trying to order the limitation or shutdown of Internet traffic in the event of an emergency, without defining what constitutes an emergency, which would hand President Obama continuous access to "all relevant data concerning networks without regard to any provision of law, regulation, rule, or policy restricting such access."

    * Acting FCC Chairman Michael Copps appoints 31 members of a diversity advisory committee, the majority of which represent ACORN-like groups that support government-mandated diversity in communication and media ownership, thus limiting national broadcasts by conservatives.

    * Fifty-seven senators believe that when they talk about diversity in media ownership and free speech, it relates primarily to gender, race and other characteristics of that nature.

    * Eighteen congressmen are trying to make it a felony for anyone who transmits any Internet communications with the intent to coerce, intimidate, harass, or cause substantial emotional distress to a person. Those found guilty would face a fine or a prison sentence of not more than two years.

    (Column continues below)

    * Janet Napolitano labels veterans, gun owners, abortion and anti-tax and spend foes potential terrorists and identifies extremists as being anti-government and rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority
    . Individuals who oppose driver's licenses for illegal immigrants or providing illegal aliens with in-state tuition or medical benefits could be flagged as a "threat."

    * President Obama, the Democrat-led Senate and House call for the protection of all 547 forms of sexual deviancy from hate crimes but provides no protection to other targets such as Christians, missionaries, pastors, veterans and the elderly. The bill essentially creates thought crimes. Pastors could be prosecuted for conspiracy to commit a hate crime by preaching against homosexuality or pedophilia.

    * In 2007, President Obama's regulatory czar Cass Sunstein said he believed that a "system of limitless individual choices, with respect to communications, is not necessarily in the interest of citizenship and self-government."

    * President Obama's nominee for State Department legal adviser, Harold Koh, said in a 2007 speech that "in an appropriate case, he didn't see any reason why Shariah law would not be applied to govern a case in the United States." Thus, America's court system could one day be saddled with oppressive Shariah law which in its most vigorous interpretations does not allow for free speech on such matters as criticism of the prophet Muhammad.

    London Telegraph columnist Boris Johnson worries that Britain's ban of Savage "reinforces a culture – created by this Labour Government, and its addiction to political correctness – where people are increasingly confused and panic-stricken about what they can say and what is forbidden." Obama seems bent on forcing Americans to live under the same system.

    The future of free speech in Great Britain and the United States looks bleak and eerily like part of President Obama's new world order.

    I don't like Savage but having his name on that list is ridiculous. I doubt Billary is going to do anything, she probably got him put on the list in the first place.

    America is next if we don't speak out now!

    Some Americans may not like what Savage or what other public personalities have to say, however, we are guaranteed freedom of speech, and if any American, regardless of their opinion is suppressed, we are ALL in trouble.

    It will only be a matter of time before we are ALL lose our freedom of Speech, this is, of course very dangerous and it runs contrary to our constitution. And once we have lost one freedom our other freedoms will come tumbling down.

    England is no longer the brave England from World War II days they are part of the EU and they have unfortunately lost their sovereignty. However, even though England does not have freedom of speech they don’t have a legitimate reason to have Savage on any list. It’s absurd and rather frightening.
