Democrat lawmakers, gun control advocates call for new restrictions

Several Democratic lawmakers, as well as gun control advocates, said that Friday’s fatal shootings at a Connecticut elementary school should move the president and Congress to swiftly address the issue of gun violence in America.

Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) called on President Obama and Congress to have a “serious discussion about gun control” in response to the shooting rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

Nadler’s statement came as details continued to emerge about the shooting. According to Connecticut State Police have reported that 20 children and 7 adults, including the shooter, have lost their lives. The alleged shooter, Adam Lanza, 24, of Hoboken, New Jersey, killed his father in Hoboken before driving to the Connecticut school, where he killed his mother, a teacher at the school, and the other adults and children, according to multiple media reports.

“I am absolutely horrified by news of the cold-blooded shooting of dozens of children in Newtown, Conn.,” Nadler said in a statement on Friday. “Yet another unstable person has gotten access to firearms and committed an unspeakable crime against innocent children. We cannot simply accept this as a routine product of modern American life.

Gun control petition to White House gets large and immediate support online

A petition urging the Obama administration to “produce legislation that limits access to guns” has more than 25,000 signatures just hours after its inception.

“The goal of this petition is to force the Obama Administration to produce legislation that limits access to guns,” it reads in part. “While a national dialogue is critical, laws are the only means in which we can reduce the number of people murdered in gun related deaths.”

A petition on the White House’s “We the People” website needs 25,000 signatures in the first month of being posted to earn an official White House response. The gun control petition – initiated in the wake of the Connecticut elementary school massacre on Friday – reached that threshold in a few hours.

“Powerful lobbying groups allow the ownership of guns to reach beyond the Constitution’s intended purpose of the right to bear arms,” the petition continues. “Therefore, Congress must act on what is stated law, and face the reality that access to firearms reaches beyond what the Second Amendment intends to achieve.”

BLOOMBERG TO OBAMA: ‘Calling For ‘Meaningful Action’ Is Not Enough’

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg issued a strong statement responding to Friday’s elementary school shooting in Connecticut, calling on Congress to take action on gun control.
“For every day we wait, 34 more people are murdered with guns,” Bloomberg said. “Today, many of them were five-year-olds.”

Bloomberg, a co-chair of Mayors Against Guns, also slammed President Barack Obama’s earlier statement on the shooting, saying that it did not go far enough to address the issue of gun violence.

“President Obama rightly sent his heartfelt condolences to the families,” he continued. “But the country needs him to send a bill to Congress”

“Calling for ‘meaningful action’ is not enough. We need immediate action.”

Media Mogul Murdoch Calls for Outlawing “Automatic Weapons”

Media mogul Rupert Murdoch tweeted after the shooting in Connecticut. Here is what he said in the tweet:



Is it possible Murdoch meant “semi-automatic,” not fully automatic? Did he mis-tweet or is he clueless about gun laws in the United States? (Murdoch was born in Australia and became a U.S. citizen in 1985. It seems his naturalization did not include the duty to understand the Second Amendment.)

Fully automatic weapons are highly regulated by the federal government in the United States. They are regulated under the National Firearms Act of 1934, the Gun Control Act of 1968, and the Hughes Amendment of 1986. In order to buy one, you must go through an extensive federal background check and obtain a permit from the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms.

As you can imagine, this anti-gun federal agency doesn’t hand out permits for automatic weapons very often.

A purchaser must go through a Class III dealer and pay a $200 transfer tax. The government restricts access to weapons manufactured before 1986. Rifles for sale are usually M16s that cost around $15,000.
It is a felony to have one of these weapons without government permission.

Rupert Murdoch may want to outlaw automatic weapons, but this would be rather pointless since there are so few of them in the hands of citizens – not legal ones, anyway.

In fact, comparatively speaking, there are a small number of semi-automatic weapons out there as well. Semi-automatic weapons account for about 15 percent of the more than 250 million privately owned firearms in the United States, according to the NRA.
