SYRIAN GIRL STONED TO DEATH FOR HAVING FACEBOOK ACCOUNT

A Syrian girl has been stoned to death for having a Facebook account, according to numerous reports out of the war-torn country.

Fatoum al-Jassem was executed after being convicted by a sharia court in the city of Ar-Raqqa, which is currently under the control of the formerly Al-Qaeda affiliated Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS).

The jihadist outfit sentenced al-Jassem on the basis that having a Facebook account is 'Zina', or immoral, and deserves to be punished in the same way as adultery. She was stoned to death by a mob of Islamists in the north Syrian city.

ISIS is a hard-line faction of the Syrian rebellion against the rule of Bashar al-Assad, and also has a presence in Iraq. It has become known for its brutal interpretation of Islam in the areas it controls, to the extent that even Al Qaeda has cut ties with it.

The group’s extreme attitude has created a split within the Syrian rebellion, with reports that rival rebel factions have started attacking ISIS-held positions. They have also stirred up resentment amongst fellow rebel groups by trying to marginalise and force them to adopt their ideology. There are even reports of them beheading rival rebel fighters.

The predominantly Sunni group were also recently in the headlines after one of their members accidentally killed twenty-two of his own men when he blew up a training class for potential suicide bombers.
